Our Lodge, like all other Nebraska Lodges, installs its officers in January, on Jan. 11 to be exact, for this year.
In a time-honored tradition, we joined Lancaster Lodge #54 and Liberty Lodge #300 for the only three-Lodge installation in Nebraska.
Installed in our Lodge were:
W. Master…Virgil Meints*Sr. Warden…Bruce T. Anderson*Jr. Warden…Kenneth W. Koop Jr.S e c … C h a r l e s A . B u r k *Sr. Deacon…Donald K. Arp Jr.Jr. Deacon…Mark W. Roper*Tyler…Reginald S. Kuhn**
* I n d i c a t e s P a s t M a s t e r** Past Master and Grand Senior Warden of the Grand Lodge
Absent and to be installed later are Past Master David R. Gates as treasurer and Bro. Roger Prochaska as Chaplain.
The evening was clear and cold and our Temple was comfortably warm for a delightful evening of Masonic fellowship and pageantry as each offi cer was conducted to the East, where Past Grand Master James F. Brown Jr. did his usual masterful job of conducting the Ceremony of Installation. Jim is a Past Master of Lancaster Lodge #54 and was the 134th Grand Master of Masons of Nebraska in 2000. Assisting him were W.B. Wade Kendle, a Past Master of Liberty Lodge #300, as Installing Marshal; W.B. Don L. Jelinek, a Past Master of Lancaster Lodge #54, as Installing Secretary; W.B. Roger Miner, a Past Master of Liberty Lodge #300, as Installing Chaplain; W.B. Steven A. Green, a Past Master of Lancaster Lodge #54, as Installing Senior Deacon; and Right W.B. Reginald S. Kuhn, as Installing Organist.
Debra Kendle, wife of W.B. Wade Kendle, was our photographer for the evening. Assisting with chairs were boys from Dr. Frederick Eiche Chapter of DeMolay International. Job’s Daughters of Bethel #27 performed their beautiful Floral Cross ceremony for the inspiration of all present. The Job’s also served refreshments at the reception in our Temple dining room following the installation.
In all it was a beautiful winter evening’s activity to get our Lodges off to a good start for the new year.
OTHERS INSTALLED
Several Brothers from our Lodge serve as Offi cers in other Masonic organizations: Past Master Andrew Loudon was installed Jan. 13 as Orator in the Lincoln Chapter of Rose Croix, one of four Lodges in the Scottish Rite Valley of Lincoln. Bro. Drew Borske was installed Jan. 6 as Asst. Rabban of the Sesostris Shrine Temple. Past Master Doug Johnson was installed Jan. 20 as Worthy Patron of Electa Chapter #8 Order of the Eastern Star.
Our new Worshipful Master Virgil Meints spoke at his installation about his plans for his year as leader of Lincoln Lodge #19. He also was our Master in 1976

INSTALLATION OF OFFICERS
Cotner Lodge #297, AF& AM, Lincoln, Nebraska, installed Patrick Barger Worshipful Master for 2007 on Saturday evening, January 13, 2007. Barger, an Air Force Captain, was excited. “I’m honored and humbled the brethren of Cotner Lodge placed their trust and confidence in me by granting this high honor. I am looking forward to guiding the lodge toward continued success.” In addition to Barger, Mark Clinton was installed Senior Warden, Jerry Taff Junior Warden, Ralph Riemann Secretary, Val Rykman Chaplain, Tyler Weers Senior Deacon, Donald Albrecht Junior Deacon, Greg Mason Senior Steward, Donald Gray Junior Steward, Craig Cook Marshal, Steven Moellering Organist, and Jerry Pigsley Tyler.
Barger is optimistic about the programs and activities he has planned for 2007 including the first ever “Masterworks of Masons” concert to be held April 14th at the Lincoln Scottish Rite. He said this concert will feature the University of Nebraska Symphonic Band under the direction of Cornhusker Marching Band Director Anthony Falcone; internationally known concert pianist and UNL professor Dr. Mark Clinton (Cotner Lodge Senior Warden, Sesostris Shrine, Tabula Rasa Lodge, and Columbia Chapter #275, OES) and internationally known clarinetist for
the Lincoln Symphony orchestra and UNL professor Dr. Diane Barger (Columbia Chapter #275, OES). Lincoln has never witnessed such a diverse group of international musicians to honor the music of such Masons as Mozart, Wagner, Gershwin, Sousa, and others. Barger says tickets are scheduled to go on sale in March but may be sooner due to great interest. “People usually pay $50-60 to see these soloists perform with the Lincoln Symphony or at the Lied Center,” he said. “As a fundraiser for Cotner Lodge’s charitable programs, we won’t be charging anywhere near those prices. People who know nothing of the connection to Masonry are anxious to see them for half price or less,” Barger said. “Masons are chomping at the bit to get tickets!” Tickets can be purchased by calling toll free 1-866-272-2631 or online at www.masterworksofmasons.com.
Barger has several other significant programs planned for 2007 as well. They include a robust recruiting drive, charitable work without monetary outlay, and a focus on innovative fellowship activities and Masonic education. “We’ll work smarter, but that doesn’t necessarily mean harder,” he said. “We hope to be very efficient and rely on good planning and communication instead of a lot of elbow-grease at the last minute.”
Barger attributes his optimism for the 2007 year to his line of lodge officers. “The Cotner Lodge
2007 Leadership Team is the best line-up of officers I have seen. I chose each and every one of my appointees based not on what they have done for Cotner Lodge, but what I think they will do for Cotner Lodge.” He emphasized, “The elected officers are extremely dedicated, progressive individuals devoted to Masonry’s ancient heritage. They will keep sight of modern principles, needs of our newest Masons, and constraints on funding.” He added, “But none of us would accomplish anything if it weren’t for the continued support and encouragement from all of the Brethren of Cotner Lodge.”
One very important aspect of Barger’s planning for the upcoming Masonic year is influenced by a personal story few outside Cotner Lodge are aware of. Barger said he dedicates the 2007 Cotner Lodge Masonic year to his late father-in-law, Robert (Bob) Cawein. “Dad’s lifelong dream was to sit in the East and use his skills and dedication to Masonry to benefit the lodge.” Barger said his father-in-law was one of the finest men he ever met and was privileged to have looked to him for fatherly guidance. Cawein was elected Worshipful Master of Cotner Lodge in November 2003 but died at the lodge of a heart attack five days before his installation. “Dad died doing what he loved – devoting his free time to Cotner Lodge. With emotion mixed with admiration Barger proclaimed, “This year is for you, Dad.”
On January 13, Cotner Lodge #297 held their installation of officers. Pictured from left to right are Marshal Craig Cook, Senior Deacon Tyler Weers, Organist Steven Moellering, Junior Steward Donald Gray, Secretary Ralph Riemann, Senior Warden Mark Clinton, Worshipful Master Patrick Barger, Junior Warden Jerry Taft, Junior Deacon Don Albrecht, Chaplain Val Rykman, Senior Deacon Greg Mason, and Tyler Jerry Pigsley. IS IT REALLY WORTH IT?
Life membership was a Grand Lodge idea! But unknown in 1988, when the Grand Lodge started life membership for any member that could, or would put 21 years of dues into the secretary’s hands of their lodge they were a member of, the lodges did not know that year or could they know how things and prices would go in latter years! As to membership of how the Grand Lodge was going to continue to raise their desires and the dues the lodges “had” to pay the Grand Lodge each April. Always wanting more money to operate. This is what is wrong now with some lodges. That was able to pay their own way with 1988 prices or 1990 or 1995 or whatever year the dwindling membership allowed. Some lodges get $125.00 a year dues, but I don’t think any in Lincoln lodge gets that much.
I don’t think a life membership is a good way to go for any mason who can come up with 21 to 22 years of dues. If so, you too can have a life membership.
[editors note: The editor has the right to refuse to publish any letter to the editor. If chosen for publication, it will be published as received with minor grammatical corrections, content corrections, however, I will not change. The correct terminology of this complaint is “Perpetual Membership.” The “dues” the Grand Lodge levies is called “per capita.” The opinion expressed in this letter is the opinion of the author. By publishing this letter, the Masonic News Inc in no way endorses this opinion.]

STATED MEETING
The January 3rd meeting was well attended and we were welcomed by Worthy Matron, Sis. Terri Sherman. After the welcome, the usual business annual reports were given by the W.M., the Sec., and the Treas. We’ll hear from our Worthy Patron next month.
A memorial service was given in memory of the 13 members we lost in 2006.
Discussion took place about the many jewels the officers of our chapter have been presented with in past years. It was decided to “retire” these jewels and to have them framed in a shadow box, with the presenters names and other information included. The Star Point officers
will still be wearing their pins. The secretary, Sis. Mary
Louise Dutcher, explained the annual report that’s submitted to Grand Chapter. It has a wealth of information on it and takes a long time to prepare. Unfortunately with the 13 deaths, some demits and 15 suspensions our membership is down to 281.
The members with birthdays in January were congratulated and the birthday song was sung.
The W.M. then thanked the 5 members who substituted for the evening, and also thanked Sis. Amy Hallock for providing refreshments.
Sis. Shirley Marks reported that Sis. Mary Sensenig had told her she no longer will be able to attend the meetings due to failing eyesight. Sis. Mary, we’ll miss your smiling
face, and still hope to see you once in a while, please keep in touch.
The W.M. closed the meeting with a reading “Snow on the Farm.”

TODAY WE THANK . . .. . . our ladies!
Part icularly, we thank you for granting us the several hours a month we devote to Masonry. We invite you to all of our frequent events open to partners or the whole family!
INSTALLATION
Lancaster Lodge #54 hosted our three-way installation this year, and held a fine ceremony. Here, finally, we print the complete list of our newly installed officers: Master- Bro. James R. Pischel, Senior Warden- Bro. Juston L. Wendt, Junior Warden- Bro. Thomas D. Morrissey Jr., Secretary- RWB. Bruce A. Watkins, Treasurer- W.B. Robert R. Foreman. Chaplain- Bro. Ross M. Young, Senior Deacon- Bro. Harold K. Nelson, Junior Deacon- Bro. John W. Baty, Senior Steward- Bro. Randy L. Cox, Junior Steward- Bro. Darrell Wengler, Marshall- Bro. Leon Kilmer, and Tyler- W.B. James L. Batten.
Performing the duties of installing marshal was our own W.B. Wade Kendle, who took the baton on short notice I’m told. W.B. Wade carried his formidable degree working skills to the installation. Debra Kendle, his wife, recorded the event with photographs. Her picture of our newly installed officers appears in this issue.
Finally, if our debt to the Kendles was not already deep enough, they also produced the programs for us. Finally, our installing chaplain was Liberty #300’s own W.B. Roger Miner.
RECENT DEGREE WORK
Since I wrote last we have raised Bro. Mark Eliker to the sublime degree of a Master Mason (Dec. 21). We congratulate you, Bro. Mark, on your advancement and wish you many happy years of Masonry.
THE FUTURE
As of this writing, our new Worshipful Master, James R. Pischel, has not assembled our 2007 action plan. Remember that we will hold our business meeting on the 8th this month, due to the Grand Lodge Annual Communication. So bring your lady, your kids, and some food to the potluck at 6:00 PM before the business meeting. Aside from that, we’re entering the season to ponder the intricacies of our degree work through lodge proficiency assessment and schools of instruction.
THANKS, W.B. BRENT A. MYERS.
A correspondent could almost robotically thank the immediate past master for a fine year—or two in this case. But you’ll know my thoughts are genuine since I’ve been compelled to thank W.B. Brent in a previous issue. Particularly on my mind are his skills in the business meetings, where he’s kept us all on time, under budget, and in harmony. Thanks, Brent!

Sis. Deb Storz WM has had a wonderful year. Everything from the 3 Initiations to the Secret Pals, and the holiday attire for the stated meetings. We, also cannot forget “The Shoe”. We are so proud of you, Deb! You now join the ranks of awesome Past Matrons of Electa #8. Whether you realize it or not, you have been an inspiration to many of us just beginning on our Eastern Star journey. Thank you for your compassion, guidence and caring.
THE “SHOE”
WM Deb Storz received “The Shoe” at her last meeting. What a fitting tribute to her, and

SHOOT FOR THE MOON
This year, Worthy Matron Marion Kantner has chosen the White Dove as her Mascot, Champagnie & Burgundy as her Colors, and her Motto is: “Shoot for the Moon. Even if you miss, you will land among the Stars.”. Best wishes to our new 2007 Officers.

Mini Grand 2006
Members of Lincoln Assembly #6 and members of the eight other Nebraska Assembles of the International Order of the Rainbow for Girls, gathered November 4-5 in Columbus for Mini Grand. The main focus of the weekend activities was to have fun with Rainbow sisters from around the state, develop new friendships and relationships, and participate in educational and service activities.
The afternoon began with a “pink” green tea party and presentations focused on increasing awareness of ways to prevent breast cancer by State Senator Carol Hudkins, OES #132, and Connie Hughes, a volunteer from the Platte County Chapter of the American Cancer Society. Green tea was served to attendees as some research suggests green tea has a protective effect against certain cancers because it contains antioxidants. The nearly 60 Rainbow Girls in attendance then created craft projects for the holidays to be delivered to the Masonic Home in Plattsmouth. The afternoon ended with a session of kickboxing and aerobic activity. An active lifestyle is one way to decrease the risk of developing cancer. Information was also provided about opportunities that will be available for Supreme Assembly in Chicago in 2008. Nebraska will be actively involved as the Grand Cross of Color team. Saturday evening included a presentation by Jennifer Birdsall, Past Grand Worthy Advisor, and Beth Bryant O’Neill, Past Junior Member of the Grand Executive Board, to provide members ideas for recruiting new members and maintaining membership in their Assemblies. The evening ended with members enjoying the Pink Panther movie while relaxing and playing games.
Sunday morning included a bit of excitement when the power
went off in several girls’ rooms and they had to finish getting ready in the dark. Must have been too many hairdryers going at one time. A devotion was provided by Karan Birdsall, Grand Executive Board and Lincoln Advisory Board member. Don Jelinek, Past Grand Patron and member of the Lincoln Assembly Advisory Board, then presented the lambskin apron talk before attendees departed. Several members of Lincoln Assembly participated in a School of Instruction provided by Betty Garwood, Nebraska’s Supreme Deputy, and other members of the Grand Executive Board before heading back to Lincoln.
Throughout the weekend, participants had the opportunity to purchase tickets for a drawing and specially made lollipops to raise funds for later donation to the American Cancer Society for breast cancer awareness, research, and support. A total of $114.00 was raised through these fund raising projects.
Members of Lincoln Assembly who attended Mini Grand were Cassandra Birdsall, Elizabeth Bowen, Christine Bryant, Allison Burris, Nicki Folsom, Jessica Rodriguez, and Michaela Whitesell. Three Lincoln Assembly pledges, Codi Gropp, Katrina Gropp, and Shelby Plummer joined the Assembly for the weekend. Five adult sponsors accompanied the girls. Lincoln Assembly members appreciate the involvement of all the adults who encourage them and support their Assembly.
Since the last issue of the Masonic News, additional donations have come in for the Grand Assembly’s Determined Glamour Girls team that participated in the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk in October. The Nebraska Rainbow Girls raised a total of $2792.00 for this American Cancer Society event. Awesome effort by the Nebraska Assemblies!

Lincoln Assembly #6 of the International Order of the Rainbow for Girls initiated four new members in two initiation ceremonies near the end of 2006. Kirsten Boothe was initiated on November 14. The above picture was taken following initiation on December 30. Pictured in the front row are new initiates Katrina Gropp, Shelby Powell, and Codi Gropp. Lincoln Assembly is pleased to have new members to continue the Assembly’s activities of service to others. The state pageant competition was held at the Dawson County High School Auditorium in Glendive. Christie sang “Route 66” during the Talent Competition and her Platform is “Preserving Music in Education.” Info and image from IOJD’s website, http://www.iojd.org/

At the January 22nd Board meeting of the Masonic News I was officially appointed Editor of The Masonic News. I am pleased to serve you in this capacity. Thank
you to our correspondents for their hard work. The email address is being used extensively now. All but two articles in this issue were received via email. It makes my
job as editor much easier when I can cut and paste out of an email. If you’d like to receive your Masonic News via email, send a note to [email protected].
