The Chamber RECOGNIZES →

Nitosha & James Berndsen

with this FIRST DOLLAR OF PROFIT

award & and many rounds of congrats

for their August 29th Grand Opening of

DETOUR BAR & GRILL Located at 215 E. Bridge St. in New Lisbon.

We wish you great success!

You’re Invited To The COMMUNITY SUPPER!

On the last Tuesday (typically) of each month there is a New Lisbon/ Necedah Area Community Supper served at the New Lisbon Community Center from

4:30pm – 6pm. All are welcome regardless of age, ability, or address! There is no charge. Meals and costs are covered each month by local business and individual sponsors.

Beginning in March 2013, some of the congregation members of the NL United Methodist Church thought it would be nice to create an opportunity for neighbors to visit and share a meal face to face…

especially in this age of virtual and technological communication.

The volunteers who prepare and serve the food do a wonderful job. Each month includes a unique menu and activity. There is always a vegetarian option for the entrée, and

a diabetic-friendly dessert choice too… plus kids’ activities and take-home gifts.

Remaining dates for 2013 are: October 29th, November 19th, and December 17th. Contact Janiece for details (608) 847-3005.

Welcome back to the 2013-2014 school year. Most people have been very positive about the beginning of the year. The custodial and maintenance staff did a great job in getting the buildings ready for school to start. Many staff members have commented about the spirit, excitement or positivity that seems to be prevalent as we start the school year, more so than the normal beginning of a school year. We have many staff excited about what the year holds and the gains we will make.

Lots of things will be done this year as we get ready for next year when Educator Effectiveness, Common Core Curriculum and Smarter Balanced Assessments will all be in place. We also will continue moving forward with initiatives from Vision 20/20 and continuing our staff book studies on poverty.

We welcomed new staff members to our school and community, Kevin Gassman teaching Kindergarten, Mike Stoughtenger in 4th grade, Nicole Paukner teaching elementary music, Monica Bork our new elementary guidance counselor, Matthew Hartmann as our junior high math teacher, Jennifer Pedersen teaching high school science and Alissa Walter is long term subbing in high school social studies.

News Release

How much do you really know about the ‘healthy’ foods you eat?

It isn’t always easy to know which foods are the best choices to make when you’re trying to eat well or attempting to

improve your diet. It can be confusing to understand what “low fat” and “no sugar added” and “low carb” really

mean.

It can be difficult to decipher food labels or to know how to make a nutritious choice when ordering off a menu at a

restaurant. Many times we pick foods like baked fish or a salad at a fast food restaurant with the hope of making a

wholesome choice, when there might be more to the meals than we bargained for. The fact of the matter is that

although all foods can be ok in moderation, we often don’t know as much about nutrition as we think we do. If we

aren’t taught to read labels or ask questions about food preparation, good intentions can turn into less-than-ideal

decisions.

What you don’t know may surprise you

Did you know that...

• Salads always sound like a good option, but when you add extras like cheese, fatty meats, large amounts of dressing,

croutons, etc., you may not be cutting out as many calories or grams of fat as you think. In fact, a fast food

cranberry bacon bleu salad contains 350 calories and 12 grams of fat, which has more calories and as much fat as

some fast food cheeseburgers!

• The recommended portion size for a cut of meat is the size of the palm of an adult’s hand or a deck of cards, much

smaller than that queen cut prime rib dinner you ordered on Saturday!

• One cup of fat-free, no sugar added ice cream might not have any fat in it, but it still contains 175 calories and 12

grams of sugar - which is equal to three teaspoons of table sugar!

• A butterburger contains 460 calories and 23 grams of fat - more than one-third of the total fat you should consume

in an entire day!

• Oatmeal, now that’s a healthy choice...or is it??? A packet of instant, cinnamon oatmeal has 160 calories and 13

grams of sugar - which is equal to four teaspoons table sugar!

If any of this information surprised you and you’re interested in learning more, call 608-847-1295 to talk to a dietitian.

Also, there will be a two-part series coming up in October to help you understand food label claims and what they

really mean. The first part of the series will be a classroom session on Tuesday, October 8 from 6 to 7 pm in which a

registered dietitian will walk you through common food label claims, and discuss what they truly mean/represent. The

second part of the series will be a hands-on, interactive grocery store tour to help you better understand food label

claims, and make the most of your food choices. Space is limited, so call the number above to reserve your spot for

one of the two tour dates. The first tour will be Tuesday, October 15, and the second will be Tuesday, October 22 from

6 to 7 pm at Mauston Festival Foods.

Dennis Birr is the Superintendent of the School District of New Lisbon, and has served in this

capacity for the past two and a half years. He is also an active member on the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association (WIAA) Advisory Council. Dennis brings a wealth of experience to our school district from his prior positions as a Business Manager for the Parkview School District, and a Math Teacher & Coach in the Reedsburg School District. He also had the distinct pleasure of coaching basketball at the University of Wisconsin Baraboo/Sauk County for seven years.

Dennis earned his Bachelor’s Degree, Master’s Degree, and School of Business Manager’s License from UW-Whitewater (Go Warhawks!) and his Superintendent's License at Cardinal Stritch University in Milwaukee.

“My goal in education is to be leader for my school district, using my experiences and training in School District Administration and School Business Management to help a school district maximize its monetary resources as a tool to help the district’s students reach their fullest potential.”

Kristie Bunker is the Chamber’s Treasurer, and she has served on our Board of Directors since

2011. Kristie owns and operates Bunker Water Jet Cutting, LLC, in New Lisbon, along with her husband Todd. She manages the administrative side of the business wearing many hats including Office Manager, Accountant and Controller.

After earning her Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Kristie now has almost 30 years of work experience in her field. She has held accounting and management positions in private business, the utility industry, and for the latter half of that time - in the manufacturing industry.

Kristie’s dream of business ownership became a reality in 2003 when she and her husband, Todd, started Bunker Water Jet Cutting, LLC. Combining Kristie’s professional financial & administrative background along with Todd’s extensive experience as a Machinist in the stainless steel manufacturing industry, and considering their shared interest in advanced technology… their business providing abrasive water jet cutting was born.

Kristie & Todd are both natives of New Lisbon and chose to raise their three children right here in their hometown.

She greets in-coming New Lisbon residents and enjoys providing them with welcome packets full of information about our Friendly City.

In 1991 Evie was honored as New Lisbon’s Citizen of the Year for her continuing dedication to serving the city. She also has an Associate’s Degree in Accounting and Computer Science.

After completing 32 years of professional service with Freudenberg Sealing Technologies in Necedah and 8 years with the Castle Rock Golf Course, Evie enjoys spending time with her three children, six grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren. She also works in the New Lisbon Schools as a substitute wearing many hats including office assistant, kitchen staff, classroom teacher’s aide, and even janitor when needed.
