As psychologists we engage in varied and sometimes-challenging work, help others on a daily basis, and feel the satisfaction that comes from doing meaningful work that contributes to the betterment of our community. Our work also affords us the opportunity to reflect more directly and deeply on human nature than is the case in many other careers. At least, that’s how it is on the good days. At other times our work can be confusing or humbling, and we can find ourselves at a loss professionally. Early-career psychologists often find the path into the profession to be daunting, and many of us (regardless of experience level) notice how easy it is to become isolated. You could say that one main aspect of the Redwood Psychological Association’s mission is to help us engage more fully and competently in the positive side of the work (through continuing education and ready access to resources and insight via the listserv). The RPA also provides opportunities for support and the satisfaction of belonging to a wider community. Some examples of the latter include occasions to collaborate with colleagues, obtain an ethics consultation from our Ethics Committee, and to connect socially with peers. One recent opportunity to get out of the office and socialize took place at our annual Holiday Party, co-hosted by members Peter Dunlap and Jim Matto-Shepard. Thanks to the kind hospitality shown to us by Peter and wife Margaret, and by Jim and wife Felicia, a large group of RPA members and their significant others enjoyed a warm and lively evening (not to mention good food and beverages!) Thanks also go out to Carol Weser for arranging the catering, Mary Sue and Patrick Sams for the tasty hors d’oeuvres, and to all the volunteers who pitched in before and after the party to help make the party a success. (President’s Column, cont’d) More recently, member Jeffery Martin led a group of us (members and their guests) on a bird-watching walk through the Ellis Creek/Schollenberger Marsh area in Petaluma. The event offered a chance to learn more about native birds and their environment, as well as the chance to socialize and experience a quiet and subtle sort of pleasure. Jeff summed this up in an email after the event, referring to the psychological "’texture of experience" which emerges once one sees the diversity of nature in all of its detail’. An optional brunch afterward afforded a chance to continue conversations begun earlier, and to enjoy the company of an interesting group of people. Many thanks to Jeff for leading this event again this year and sharing his expertise with us all. Future opportunities to get out and connect (and learn) will be coming soon. On Thursday, February 27th Cori Herzig and Virginia Crossleysmith will present at Osake Restaurant, on the topic of Developmental Trauma Disorder. On Wednesday, April 16 Shoshana Bennett will be speaking at the Union Hotel in Santa Rosa, on the topic of Mood Disorders in Pregnancy and Post-partum. More information about these talks and about registering can be found elsewhere in the newsletter; or you can go directly to our website to register, at redwoodpsych.org. To conclude this message, I want to give special thanks to a couple of members who have made significant contributions to the board over the past years. My thanks go out, first of all, to last year’s President, Peggy O’Toole, who contributed countless hours and brought great energy and passion to her role. Her contributions will be greatly missed this year. We will also miss the energy and presence and insight of Mary Sue Sams, who has contributed greatly on the board in a variety of roles, most recently as President and Past President. Peggy and Mary Sue, we will miss you at the meetings, and look forward to our continued association through the RPA and elsewhere.

New member introductions:

Jennifer Lotz, Psy.D. I recently graduated from Wright State University after completing my Predoctoral internship at Cal Poly University. I moved to Ukiah in September and am seeking post-doctoral opportunities in Mendocino and Sonoma Counties. One of my passions as a therapist is in group therapy. I have been involved with the development of Focused Brief Group Therapy, a brief process group approach, and have presented on the model at AGPA annually since 2011. As an interpersonal- relationally oriented therapist, I enjoy work with survivors of childhood abuse and neglect, sexual assault, and domestic violence as well as working with members of the LGBT community.

Andrew Kerlow-Myers, Ph.D. Hello RPA! I settled in the area last August, after completing my PhD from Albany, NY, and my internship at Arizona State University’s counseling center. I love the Rohnert Park / Santa Rosa area, and have thoroughly enjoyed the RPA events I have attended so far (especially January’s birding event). I have been enjoying my residency at Sonoma State University since moving to the area. My residency will be ending soon, so I am beginning the hunt for employment opportunities nearby. Thanks for the opportunity to introduce myself, and I am looking forward to getting to know more RPA members!

Angela Clarke, Ph.D. I earned my Ph.D in Clinical Psychology from Palo Alto University following the completion of my internship at UC Davis Medical Center, where I conducted cognitive and psychological assessments to patients with an array of medical and psychiatric conditions in inpatient and outpatient settings. My previous training experiences also include conducting assessments for the VA-Livermore Polytrauma unit, and providing counseling in the methadone clinic and a residential facility. Currently, I am completing my post-doctoral residency at Optimal Minds Neuropsychology under the supervision of Ariati Rakic, Ph.D, where my training and responsibilities are focused on providing neuropsychological assessments and cognitive rehabilitation services.

News from California Psychological Association and the Monterey Convention Michael Pinkston As our chapter’s representative to the Board of CPA, I attended the recent CPA Board Meeting this month and was again reminded of the quality and dedication of the elected officers as well as the paid staff of the only organization that is protecting the profession of psychology in California. I have always been impressed that CPA does such a good job of identifying the interests and challenges of our profession and using that information to inform its approximately 4000 members as well as create influential relationships with both the state legislators and state agencies of importance to our profession such as the BOP. What is really amazing about this is that CPA does what it does with a membership which only includes about 25% of the licensed psychologists in our state. Imagine what CPA could do if even 50% of licensed members were to join! Although for me advocating for our profession in California with our ever changing healthcare climate has always been reason enough to be a member of CPA, the opportunity for so much high quality continuing education at the annual convention and elsewhere while learning of the many resources of professional expertise in our state has also been a major benefit.

The quarterly magazine (The California Psychologist) has outstanding articles on the practice of psychology in our state including many that meet the BOP requirement to stay informed on Ethics as well as the opportunity for up to 3 free CE per issue. I urge you to take the time to visit the CPA website at http://www.cpapsych.org to see more of the advantages of being a member. Although it does cost $295 (prior to 3/19) for a member to attend the entire annual 4 day convention (less for fewer days) held each spring, this is $100 less than nonmembers pay for the event and that fee allows a participant to receive up to 16 CE while connecting with new colleagues with common interests and reconnecting with others. This year we are meeting at the Monterey Marriot on 4/10-13 and you can learn about the schedule of the events and CE at http://www.cpapsych.org in the CE Section. We used this same hotel 2 years ago and it turned out to be such a popular site (even with the significantly larger percentage of CPA members being from the south part of our state) that CPA was eager to return. I saw several RPA members there last time and hope to see even more this year. What I think makes this site so special is that the hotel (great convention rate) though not fancy seems to invite people outdoors when events are not in session. It is 1-2 blocks from the ocean boardwalk and bike path with a short walk to Cannery Row which makes most participants and even significant others staying there feel like they are on vacation with lots of choices any time they step outdoors during lunch and dinner breaks. I would urge even those of you who are not CPA members to consider attending.
