Tool  Maintenance

•  Air  tools  are  pre3y  simple,  right?  Plug  in  an  air

hose  to  an  air  source  on  one  end,  turn  that

source  on  and  hook  your  air  tool  up  to  the  other

end  of  the  hose.  Or  is  it  that  simple?

•  You  will  have  to  do  some  research  and  view  this

Powerpoint  to  get  the  answer  to  that  ques'on.

Air  Tool  Oil

•  Most  people  know  that  cars  need  an  oil  change  every  3,000  miles.  I'd  also  say  that  most  people  don't  change  their  oil  quite  that  oKen.  But  most  of  us  understand  that  the  pistons  generate  a  lot  of  fric'on  inside  of  a  car  motor,  and  the  rings  wear  out  faster  without  proper  lubrica'on.  So  what's  that  have  to  do  with  air  tools?  A  lot.

Air  Tool  Oil

•  Inside  of  an  air  tool,  there  are  pistons  and  rings  as  well.

The  rings  aren't  metal  like  they  are  in  a  car  motor  -‐

instead  they're  rubber  o-‐rings.  But  the  piston  itself  s'll

needs  some  lubrica'on.  It  is  essen'al  that  the  metal  to

metal  surfaces  get  something  slippery  between  them  so

that  they  don't  generate  excessive  heat  and  fric'on,

which  would  cause  premature  wear.

Air  Tool  Oil

•  Oiling  an  air  tool  is  pre3y  simple.  Before  you  use  it,  just  add  a  couple  of  drops  of  air  tool  oil  to  the  tool  through  the  air  fiSng.  For  tools  that  get  used  once  every  now  and  then,  just  once  before  using  it  for  the  day  is  good  enough.  If  it  is  a  tool  geSng  heavy  use,  it  would  be  a  good  idea  to  add  a  few  drops  a  few  'mes  through  the  day.

Addi'onal  air  tool  components

•  There  is  a  bit  more  to  maintaining  an  air  tool,

such  as  o-‐rings,  cleaning,  driver  blades  and  jam

clearing.  But  the  basics  above  are  the  only  ones

that  really  apply  equally  to  every  air  tool.  If

you've  got  ques'ons  on  a  specific  tool  refer  to

the  owners  manual  or  a  Squad  Driver.

COMMON  TECHNICAL  INFORMATION

•  Opera'on

–  The  tools  are  operated  by  ac'va'ng  a  trigger  valve

located  in  the  pistol  grip  handle.  This  valve  releases

the  air  supply,  driving  the  piston  rod  forward  to  impact

 against  the  tool  bit.

–  The  piston  rod  return  stroke  is  made  by  the  return  spring

assembly.

–  The  tool  bits  are  held  by  a  hand  operated,  spring  loaded,  and

quick  release  safety  retainer.

COMMON  TECHNICAL  INFORMATION

•  Tool  Bits

– The  tool  bits  used  are  manufactured  from  tool  steel

and  then  hardened  for  maximum  durability.

– These  tools  can  be  used  throughout  the  full  pressure

range  of  the  impact  tool  and  are  available  in  a  variety

of  styles  for  all  applica'ons.
