National Day Celebration in Our School  This year our school held a grand National Day celebration on 31 August 2005. It was held in our school field.

The event kicked off at 8.00 a.m. All the students and many parents were already gathered around the field. The president of the Parent-Teacher Association officiated the opening ceremony. Then we had the march past. The school band led the march past. Members of the various school societies, uniformed bodies and clubs also took part.

After the march past, we had the raising of the flag by the head prefect, Azlan Hashim. The school band played the National Anthem as the flag was raised. Then, we sang several patriotic songs.

This was followed by some cultural shows performed on stage erected at one end of the field. There were traditional dances performed by the students. Their costumes were beautiful and the performances were excellent

The last event that morning was the rhythmic gymnastics performed by the Gymnasts Club. They were very talented and executed a skilful presentation with music, ribbons and hoops.

Our National Day celebration was truly a momentous one. The event was a success. It also helped us to appreciate the wonderful country we live in.

19, Jln Kota, Tmn Parit Pasir Gudang, 81700, Johor 19 May 2012Dear Ricky,How are you? I hope you are in the pink. Your family is alright too I hope. I am just enjoying my life studying  and working hard just going to school to be a good student and playing well in my sport.  Thank you for your last letter and pictures. You looked like you have been having fun there.

There is one thing I noticed in the pictures. I saw you had been smoking in public my friend. I strongly advise you to quit smoking and turn to a new life. Smoking can lead to harmful consequences.

Smokers may have started smoking because their friends did or because it seemed cool. However, they keep on smoking because they became addicted.  If your friends keep on smokers, I suggest you to refrain yourself from doing the same thing because it only leads to more harms than benefits.

Try to take baby steps to throw away that habit. You can try tossing out that emergency pack you have stashed in the secret pocket of your backpack. Get rid of your ashtrays and lighters, too . Yes, your sister told me all about it.

Well, I have to go, it is almost dinnertime here. I hope you will take note of that I have said. All the best!

Yours sincerely, Marcus Rivera

When writing an essay about giving opinions :

read the question thoroughly make sure you pick a stand use the points in the note AND elaborate add some of your own points

Ranjit and Suzana are at a food stall. They want

to buy some fruit for a class party. Ranjit likeslocal fruit but Suzana prefers imported fruit. Read the dialogue. Who do you agree with? Provide reasons to support your answer.

Suzana : Ranjit, do you prefer to eat local or imported fruit?Ranjit : I love local fruit. They are nutritious as well as delicious.Suzana : I like local fruit too but I prefer apples and pears though. Somehow, I feel imported fruit just taste better.Ranjit : Well, I find local fruit richer in vitamins and nutrients compared to imported fruit. They are also cheaper.Suzana : But eating too much local fruit can make you fall sick. You definitely won’t fall sick if you eat too many apples and oranges.

 • When writing your opinion:• state your stand clearly• add any other relevant details to make it

more interesting.• make sure it is not less than 120 words.

Page 16: Pmr English Paper 2 Slides

Introduction :State the topic Talk about both sides firstThen make a stand – ‘I agree that …. “

Body :Why do you agree / disagree?

Conclusion –Reinstate the stand

Fruits are important to our health. Fruits are easily accessible and taste delicious. There are various types of fruits, and they come from different parts of worlds. There are fruits that are grown in the country and those that we import from other countries. In the situation given, I agree with Ranjit that local fruits are better than imported fruits. Local fruits are not only delicious but they are cheaper, fresher and contain more nutritional benefits.

Since we can get most local fruits anytime and anywhere, they are much cheaper. Imported fruits, on the other hand, are most expensive because they have to be transported to our country.

Sometimes, the imported fruits are also not so fresh. This is because these fruits are packed and refrigerated before they are exported from their countries of origin. It also takes quite a while for the fruits to reach our country.

Furthermore, local fruits such as guavas and rambutans have higher Vitamin C content than most imported fruit. Although many believe that oranges are a good source of Vitamin C, research has proven that our local fruits has twice the content of Vitamin C. Local fruits also have other nutritional benefits and are better for consumers.

Thus, I firmly believe that local fruits are a much better option than imported fruits.

Ali is my best friend. He is 12 years old.He lives in Taman Setia. He is kind and helpful. He likes to stay with his grandfather in the village during the school holidays. His grandfather has a farm and he rears some chickens and ducks in his farm. Ali likes to help his grandfather in his farm when he goes there.

Last holidays, Ali went to his grandfather’s farm in Terengganu. His grandfather has many chickens and ducks. Ali helped his grandfather in the farm. He picked the eggs and fed the chickens and ducks carefully. After the eggs have hatched he retrieved it from the chickens very gently.

Then, Ali sold the eggs in the afternoon. He went to the shops by van. Ali was happy because he has learnt doing business from his grandfather. He felt very grateful for the things he had learned during his stay.

Page 28: Pmr English Paper 2 Slides

Write about a moral value you have learnt. Support it with evidence from the story.

I have read Around the World in 80 Days by Jules Verne. The moral value that I have chosen is we have to find solutions when we are faced with challenges or problems and do not give up. I learnt this moral value firstly from Phileas Fogg’s character. Whenever he encountered problems, he would try his best to find the solution. For example, when their train got stuck because the railroad in India was incomplete. Passepartout suggested to him to use the elephant. When the owner of the elephant refused to to let him hire it, he did not simply give up. He was determined and offered more money until it reached two thousand pounds and the owner finally agreed to let it go with that price. This shows when we have a problem, we should not simply walk away from it, instead we need to keep on trying to overcome it. I also learnt this moral value from Passepartout, the butler. He is someone who does not give up easily. This can be proved when he was in Japan. When he was lost and needed money for food, he traded his clothes for a Japanese costume and food. Later, he joined an acrobatic troupe where he was reunited with Phileas and Aouda. I learned that I should be calm and think clearly and make plans when I am hit with a problem. This is the moral value I have learned from the book.

I had a fantastic time during the last school holidays. After receiving his bonus, Dadtook us to Layang-layang Atoll, a beautiful coral island, situated north of Sabah. We checked into the holiday resort late that evening. Then, we immediately rushed out to witness the breathtaking sunset. After dinner, we went early to bed, looking forward to the activities we were going to do the next morning. Rising early, we went snorkelling in the cool, clear waters off the island. The scene before us was colourful and amazing. The live corals floated along with the movements of the current and we saw a wonderful variety of fish. Among them were puffer fish, clown fish and angel fish. The next day, we had another wonderful experience. We went scuba-diving under the supervision of an expert. I was glad to be close to nature. I thanked God for giving me this wonderful opportunity. On our last night, we stayed awake till the wee hours of the morning. It was because we were enjoying a fine barbecue by the seaside with fish that we had freshly caught from the sea. It was certainly a memorable holiday.

Topic sentence is the sentence that holds the gist of a paragraph. You need to determine this first.

TS - Topic sentence: Consumers are people who buy or use any product.

Example 1 : Consumers are people who buy or use any product. They buy food and other things Example 2 : Who are consumers? Consumers are people who buy or use any product. This means you and I are consumers. We buy food, clothing, books and other things. Consumerism is a term which means that consumers are actively involved in making sure that they receive good products and at reasonable prices.

In addition, he planted durians, guava and other fruits on a vacant land next to his house.

He encouraged his neighbours and other villagers to do the same.

He knew that he could sell the fruits and thus earn money.

To set an example, he grew vegetables such as sawi and kangkong in his backyard.

This meant that his family became self-sufficient in vegetables and did not have to buy them.
