2015 AGM
Dominique Mulholland
PMI SA Chapter President
Good day members
Our 2015 AGM was a great success, and is an event we look forward to every
year, as it allows us to brag about our successes, as well provide our
members with our goals and strategy going forward.
What is PMI South Africa’s Chapter Strategy? In a nutshell , to support and
enhance Project Management. If that is too vague for you, perhaps our
immediate goals and key objectives will help define just how we plan to meet
this strategy.
Professional development – we arrange PMP and CAPM preparation workshops for potential PMP/CAPM’s, which also provides an opportunity for members to earn PDU’s by presenting at these workshops. We hold PMI Awareness/professional development days, where we run through the different certifications, the benefits of PMI membership and allow the opportunity for attendees to review the different REP’s and their course offerings. We are also looking at other professional registrations and ensuring our certifications receive the points they should be. If you have contacts in these or suggestions for where we need to focus our efforts PLEASE contact me directly.
Outreach – we are focusing on academic outreach. By this we mean reaching out universities and colleges to enhance the project management skills and awareness amongst students , in any field.
Marketing – we have a marketing team that is revising our look and feel, ensuring we look like the professional Chapter that we are. They are also reviewing key companies for myself and other volunteers to present to, to ensure they know about PMI and how essential it is for their employees to be certified. Thus making sure that when you as a certified PMI professional step into an interview, the interviewer is already impressed by your PMI status.
Volunteering – Volunteering is the HR of Chapter. Without volunteers none of the above projects can be achieved, and Suneel is doing a lot of work to recruit volunteers as well as manage their role descriptions/allocation and ensure this is run correctly.
Finance – Financial goals are quite simple – as a non-profit any money raised by any event
can only be utilised by PMI South Africa Chapter after going through EXCO approval. As I mentioned in my speech at the AGM, I may have some great reasons as to why I should arrive at presentations in a Porsche – but not only do we not have the funds for such a fun Presidential perk, the EXCO would never approve the frivolous and unethical spending of our finances.

Membership – managing your expectations and welcoming you to our family is a key aspect of membership. Obviously, the goal is always to increase membership, the challenge is to find what it is that you as members need from us to ensure you renew, and in turn encourage others to join. One such aspect is a membership pack which you will see launched as soon as our new marketing proposal is approved.
Branches – we need your attendance, and your volunteering of your time to make these work. Often we receive requests for ‘why is there no branch in our town’ and it really comes down to you. KZN and Gauteng have strong teams (who always could do with more assistance) but Port Elizabeth and Cape Town currently only keep going because Zameka and Marko are such passionate people. Without your support, or some time volunteering, there is always the risk that life will step in their way and we will no longer have a branch due to a lack of volunteers. This is an unfortunate truth, so please, even if you are not interested in volunteering, attend their events and show your support and appreciation for their hard work.
On that note, the branches are also looking for your guidance – perhaps they do not offer what you
are looking for… The AGM provided a platform for some direct contact for members and we received
interesting feedback. To best achieve their goals, the branches require information from members.
We will be sending a short but essential survey shortly, and we would sincerely appreciate your
honest feedback.
In closing we welcomed a number of new volunteers to our portfolios, and for the first time in a long
time we have an almost complete EXCO. This makes me pleased, as without guidance, no project can
succeed. Keep in mind a President is only around for two years, and soon my role will be up. If the
idea of ‘President’ or ‘VP’ makes you get a little excited – volunteer. Start small, if you show
enthusiasm, trust me, your responsibility will increase exponentially.
I do hope a few of our members are attending the PMI Africa Conference, it looks to be an incredible
event!
All the best,
Dominique

ProjectLink to Take the Stage
at the PMI Global Congress
Once Again
ProjectLink’s Hannes van den Berg and Werner Meyer are no newcomers to
the international speaking arena when it comes to project management. At
this year’s PMI® Global Congress taking place in Orlando, Florida in October,
our MD, Werner Meyer, will take the stage and present on: “Quantifying Risk:
Measuring the Invisible.”
The presentation is based on the processes ProjectLink followed in order to perform a quantitative risk assessment (QRA)
for the construction of a concentrator plant for a client in the platinum mining industry in South Africa. The purpose of the
QRA was to determine the budget and schedule contingency of the project.
The presentation will also cover the importance of:
• Planning for effective QRAs and risk management.
• Choos ing appropriate methods in order to perform an efficient QRA.
• Choos ing an appropriate P-Value from a Monte Carlo simulation.
• How QRA results affect the project business case.
• What decision-makers should know about QRAs
• How can QRA results be used in the management of portfolios.
Once we are able to confirm from the PMI whether Werner’s presentation will be streamed in real -time, we will
share the details with you.

Volunteer Positions -
Notice Board
Often around this time we have queries regarding how members can run for these
positions, and we encourage all interested volunteers to get involved.
In order to run for an Executive position,
we require a volunteer to have been volunteering with PMI already, usually
with their local branch, and as they find their niche will be mentored into an Executive position. Interested?? We have these positions currently available to start immediately and would love for you to join us. If you are interested in any of the positions, please send an email to [email protected],
with a motivation as to why you would like to take on the position or feel you
would be the right fit. We look forward to welcoming you to our team!
Assistant VP Administration Position Description: The aim of this position is to be mentored to take over as VP Administration. You will be required to take minutes of meetings, prepare documents for EXCO members, liaise closely with all Portfolio’s and Branches, and answer all [email protected] queries. You will need to do some background research and understand the ins and outs of certification registration, prerequisites for the certifications and other PMI related knowledge. However, you will
have strong guidance and support. Skills/Requirements: Reliable daily
Internet access and an hour a day. Good
interpersonal skills. Strong ethics as you will be dealing with queries from non-PMI members and must respect their privacy.
Gauteng Based.
Mentor- Carla Topp
Special Projects – Project/Event Lead & Team members
Position Description: Currently Lynn Keeys
heads up this Portfolio, and will guide its strategy. As Project Lead you will
formulate and guide the event’s team in setting up and running ‘special’ events.
These events are once off or annual events that PMI conducts. At the moment the focus has been Gauteng and the immediate project is the International Project Management Day event. You may apply for this position if you are currently a volunteer with us and would like to run with this event. You will work closely with Lynn, Annabe and Dominique for guidance. Please also apply if you would like to be on the team – we will need volunteers to ‘man’ the registration desk, co-ordinate the décor, welcome the presenter and set them up, reply to RSVP’s and manage receipts and payments. As you can see variable time requirements but a great
way to earn PDU’s and start volunteering. Assistant Volunteering Position Description: This volunteer will be working closely with Suneel in the Volunteering portfolio, managing the database and ensuring the correct procedures and documents are signed and filed. They will be a right hand and as such if this portfolio has you excited then this position is perfect for you.

Requirements: Interpersonal skills are a must, and a passion for volunteering essential.
Mentor – Suneel
Cape Town Branch
A fine example of team effort, Marco
Divac has been guiding this branch and would appreciate as much assistance as
you are willing to give – just join the team and he will guide you! Please send your
details or introduce yourself to him at the branch meeting and he can align you to
your best fit. Port Elizabeth Branch Zameka has been arranging the meetings and guiding this branch, but could really do with some assistance. Please contact us and introduce yourself to her, theirs is a lot of room for growth in this branch and if you have some ideas and passion you can really make a big impact! KZN Branch Molly and her team recently re-launched this branch, and are doing an amazing job.
Positions are available, and they plan on arranging a PMP preparation workshop – but need your help to get it off the ground. Again, this can be as simple as assisting at registration, to presenting at the workshop. Both are easy – but rely on different skills. Perhaps you still not sure quite what you want to do? Contact us or introduce yourself to Molly at the next branch meeting and she will help align you to available options. We have many new volunteers who have joined our branches and teams, and
although I do not list them all here, they are all essential and it is only through their time and effort that we have managed to
achieve all that we have. To those who have just started (our Marketing Team,
our new website administrator, branch members and more) we welcome you and
look forward to the innovative changes and improvements you will bring.
To those who have resigned, we thank you
for your time and appreciate all you have done. We always look forward to seeing
you at our branch meetings, and hope you will volunteer again when your time
allows it.
