Growth in manufacturing output for the domestic market had remained modest. Among subsectors, growth in output of construction products had remained robust, although some suppliers to the housing sector had reported a softening of demand from builders. While food processors supplying the major supermarkets had reported very modest output growth, output of some specialist food products had strengthened. Manufacturers supplying the oil and gas sector had spoken of falling order books, with existing projects subject to delay, re-specification or occasionally outright cancellation. I News PMG Employee Engagement Conference considered a great success 1. Over eighty representatives from more than thirty local manufacturing

firms gathered recently to attend a major conference organised by the PMG on the subject of employee engagement. Employee engagement is consistently raised by PMG Managing Director’s as their #1 ‘hot-topic’ and it’s not hard to see why when recent research by the polling firm Gallup found that only 17% of UK employees are giving their employers high levels of discretionary effort. The purpose of the PMG event was to focus attention on a broad range of topics, giving both an insight into best practices within local firms such as the Wrigley Company; Rittal-CSM and Ginsters as well as bringing an external perspective from leaders in their field. Keynote speaker was John Yorke (right), one of the UK's most successful storytellers, prolific producer writer and former head of BBC drama. John explained why storytelling is an essential tool for business. He said that unless you understand what your organisation’s story is – and are able to tell it clearly, consistently and compellingly for your audience – core messages will not get across. Employers require managers that can inspire; engage and empower their colleagues. More and more firms are recognising the power of storytelling as a strategic business tool. John spoke in his capacity as an associate of the Professional Writing Academy. The event was chaired by Rhys Blackaller, Factory Group Manager, Marine Naval Bases,

Marine & Technology division of Babcock International. Rhys is Chair of the PMG’s Skills & Engagement subgroup. Other speakers at the event included: Kelechi Nnoaham, Director of Public Health, Plymouth City Council and representatives from the Met Office; Investors In People; survey specialists Youbecome and the South West Energy Centre. Post script - 82% of attendees surveyed after the event said that they were highly likely to implement something that they had learnt at the seminar back in their workplace – some already had! 76% gave the event either a ‘high’ or a ‘medium to high’ overall rating. Also

see our new regular slot on employee engagement as part of Section VIII below p19. Speaker PowerPoints are now downloadable here. A photo montage of the event is available - here

Manufacturers’ optimism reportedly showing a decline 2. Manufacturing firms have reported the biggest decline in optimism this month since March 2013.

According to the latest Business Trends Report by accountants and business advisers BDO, exporters have been particularly hard-hit as the continued slow performance of the Eurozone hits overseas markets and the strong pound makes British goods more expensive. Low oil and gas prices have also curbed investment by the sector and slowed orders for manufacturing firms in the region. The four point drop in BDO's Manufacturing Optimism Index means it currently stands at 103.4. While this is still above the long term average, this is only due to the sector's weak performance since the financial crisis. This means the dual speed recovery looks set to continue. The drop in manufacturing confidence is in stark contrast to BDO's Optimism and Output Indices, which predict overall business growth for the latter part of 2015.

Index of Production, April 2015 (published in June) 3. Manufacturing output increased

by 0.2% in April 2015 compared with a year earlier. The largest contribution to the increase came from the manufacture of transport equipment. It decreased by 0.4% in April 2015 compared with the previous month. The largest contribution to the decrease in manufacturing came from basic pharmaceutical products & pharmaceutical preparations. City Council Leader’s Correspondence with the Government’s new Cabinet Members 4. The City Council are making sure key Plymouth issues are high on the agenda of new Government

Cabinet members. Councillor Evans has written to key members of the new Cabinet setting out some of the most pressing issues for Plymouth and asking for meetings at the earliest opportunity to discuss them. They include support for the Mayflower 400 celebrations, addressing underfunding in areas such as public health, progressing the City Deal, investing in rail infrastructure and support for Devonport Naval Base. In his letter to Penny Mordaunt, Minister of State for Armed Forces, Councillor Evans also welcomed the support for Plymouth’s Enterprise Zone bid for South Yard, which will enable the city to fast track developments to create a marine production campus employing 1,200 people, but told the Portsmouth MP that Plymouth needed to be treated fairly over the Dockyard and Naval Base. And in his letter to Sajid Javid, Secretary of State for Business Innovation and Skills, Councillor Evans asked for further talks on further support for Plymouth’s plans to match skills with employers’ needs, particularly in growth areas such as the marine sector. The full letters are available - here

Time to Act: The economic consequences of failing to expand airport capacity

5. The Independent Transport Commission (ITC) has published a report that highlights the macro-economic consequences that the country could face if the Government fails to act upon the Airport Commission’s forthcoming recommendations. The ITC is a respected independent transport think tank. The work shows that the most productive and innovative firms in any economy are those that are involved in international trade and investment. Given this, the report maintains that any failure to take account the needs of firms when deciding on the need for airport capacity ultimately risks harming the UK economy. This report highlights points that were noted in the ITC’s previous report that maintained that Heathrow attracts airlines serving key business destinations and consequently has a higher proportion of business travellers, particularly within the inbound business market. Steve Costello, a director of Heathrow Hub, the independent proposal to expand Heathrow by extending the northern runway, said: “This is an authoritative piece of work from the ITC which shows that Heathrow is the best place for another runway, and the cost of inaction is that Britain will fall behind in its connections to the markets of the world. The Airports Commission is due to report imminently and we know that ministers are already considering carefully how to respond. The ITC report is a good place to start. Britain cannot afford to delay airport expansion any longer.” The full report by the Independent Transport Commission can be downloaded here.

Waycon Design Waycon Design, a subsidiary of Luminati Waycon was established in 1983, initially specialising in the design and manufacture of dry storage cabinets for the semi-conductor and electronics industry. With the instability and volatility of this market the Company diversified, utilising its plastic fabrication and design skills and branched into many areas of display design and manufacture. Luminati now has an in-house 3D design team running on SolidWorks, dedicated sales team and full production team at their Lee Mill based factory. Luminati is renowned for its fast prototyping of bespoke items prior to planning the production runs for its growing client base. Over the last 3 years, the company has fragmented its specialist areas and the Luminati group of companies now has 3 trading businesses. The group has demonstrated growth of 20% year on year for the last 13 years. Waycon Design, is the industrial part of the business (the original roots) and has been run by its current two directors, Steve Senior and John Gall, (both Chartered Engineers) for the past 13 years.

With the resurgence of manufacturing in the UK and an increase in the microelectronic and semiconductor industry, the Dry storage and Desiccator market is again growing. Waycon Design are constantly developing new product ranges for improved functionality and adding new products associated with the cleanroom market including, glove and apparel dispensers and component storage systems. The company works closely with production engineering and manufacturing engineers to provide bespoke solutions.

Twelve months ago Waycon design became the UK agent for Terra Universal, perhaps the world’s largest cleanroom equipment supplier and is therefore now able to offer a complete range of products for the Critical Environment market, ranging from full clean rooms to desiccators, glove boxes and instrumentation.

St Luke’s Hospice - Employee Volunteer Experience Days

32. At St Luke’s Hospice we are keen to partner with companies who recognise the value of investing in the local community and we firmly believe that Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) schemes, like employer supported volunteering, can bring tangible benefits to both Hospice and the companies who choose to work with us. We have recently introduced “Employee Volunteer Experience” days, which will run throughout the year. These have been developed in-house by our own Volunteer Services Co-ordinator and will provide a variety of benefits for companies wishing to take part in fulfilment of their CSR objectives. We are able to accommodate individuals or groups of up to twenty-five - Volunteering can help to develop many important skills including teamwork, communication, project management and problem solving abilities to name but a few. The positive effect on employees is significant. A MORI opinion poll found the nine in ten employees believe that a company who is active in the community is probably a very good employer. There are also brand and reputation benefits to be gained. Being active in the community by partnering with a highly regarded charity like St Luke’s will impress stakeholders and help to set your organisation apart from those who do not. Corporate Social responsibility schemes help to increase customer goodwill and loyalty and improve relationships with the community. If you would like to learn more about employee volunteering with St Luke’s I would be happy to arrange for you to visit the hospice. Please feel free to contact Sanna Tyrvainen, Volunteer Services Co-ordinator on 01752 246547 or via email to: [email protected] , or myself, Lorna Damella Corporate Fundraiser on 01752 246591, email: [email protected] Alternatively please visit our website: https://www.stlukes-hospice.org.uk/volunteer - We look forward to hearing from you.

Charity Challenge – Catherine is cycling 480 km across Zambia in around 5 days 33. Dear PMG Colleagues, I am the Olympus Ambassador for ‘Street Child

Africa’ which is one of the nominated charities we support as a Group. Street Child Africa supports young kids who, for unfortunate and tragic reasons, are forced to live on the streets in Africa. Some of these kids as young as 6, live dangerous and desperate lives with no adult to help with injuries, medicine or life support and unfortunately their vulnerability means they are subject to both physical and sexual abuse. This charity work close with local Business Partners within the areas and build trust with the street-connected children, providing help, medicine and education through regular out-reach sessions, in the attempt to integrate them back within the society. I have taken on a challenge to raise money for the charity and have agreed to cycle 480 km across Zambia in around 5 days......... tough, but do-able as long as I start training now! So the purpose of my contact is to appeal to you and your companies generosity and ask if you could donate and support me on this quest. I have set up a page on the website www.justgiving.com/Catherine-Harris16 and you can donate on line. I will be going through the local media to try and raise the awareness of the charity and the event, however in the meantime thank you for reading my appeal and I would be extremely grateful for any support you are able to offer. Kind regards, Catherine Harris, Managing Director, Algram Group Ltd. email - [email protected] [email protected]

Jim Smith, Associate Lecturer and PhD Researcher, Plymouth University 34. ‘My name is Jim Smith, I am a PhD student at Plymouth University under the

supervision of Dr Paul Jones. The reason for my e-mail is that I am currently looking for companies who would be interested in working with me on a research project I am running and Penny Hele suggested I contact the PMG. My research is focused upon entrepreneurship and Human Resource Management, in particular understanding how the entrepreneurial/innovative talents of employees can be harnessed by SMEs. There is relatively little research in this area and so participating companies will be making a significant contribution that will be of real benefit to SMEs throughout the UK and beyond, as well as gaining greater insight into their own business. In return for a company's involvement I offer the following: • A bespoke consultancy style report based upon my findings within the organisation, including

specific practical recommendations to help the company maximise the entrepreneurial/innovative output of their employees.

• A report summarising the overall findings once the study is complete. I attach an information sheet here containing further details, however, if you or any of your members have any queries please do let me know. Many thanks for your time and interest’. VII Consultations, Reviews, Surveys & Calls for Evidence

Job roles on shortage occupation list to be removed 35. The Prime Minister has announced plans to reduce

employers’ reliance on workers from outside of Europe. In a keynote speech, the Prime Minister said he would ask the Migration Advisory Committee (MAC) to review the shortage occupation list again with the aim of removing many of the job roles currently on it. EEF’s policy and representation team is acting on all of the issues. We (EEF) will be responding to the MAC review of the shortage occupation list and the skills levy consultation. We will also be talking directly to senior officials at BIS, the Home Office and the MAC to mitigate the negative consequences these announcements will have in advance. It is crucial we have a strong evidence base and therefore are looking for EEF members who would be interested in joining our Immigration Working Group. This Group will play a fundamental role in shaping our policy positions on the above, and wider immigration issue. If you are interested, please contact Verity O’Keefe, Senior Employment and Skills Policy Adviser at [email protected]
