Military Voices – 1914, The Carol Of Christmas £1.79 SGOD141 0889176228148 CD SGO RECORDS POP

***Digital download distributed by Proper***

100 years on from the very first Christmas in the trenches of the Great War, military voices are once again raised in harmony for a moving song of tribute to bravery and sacrifice. The song, simply titled '1914 - The Carol of Christmas' celebrates the power

of Christmas to bring peace in the midst of war and commemorates those who fought in World War One.

The song is sung by an ensemble of military voices and soloists including Flight Lieutenant Matt Little, Abby Scott and twelve-year-old Canterbury Cathedral chorister and BBC Radio 2's Young Chorister of the Year Finalist William Inscoe who are accompanied by the RAF Spitfire Choir, one of the RAF's top vocal groups. Composed by Chris Eaton, (who wrote the 1990's Cliff Richard Number One Christmas hit 'Saviour's Day') and Judd Field, '1914- The Carol of Christmas' is raising money for the Royal Air Force Benevolent Fund, The Royal Navy and Royal Marines Charity, and ABF The Soldier's Charity. These charities assisted the veterans of World War One and continue to support both serving and former soldiers, sailors, airmen and their families, and are committed to meeting the welfare needs of the Service community as they arise in the future. Jack DeJohnette - Made in Chicago £9.49 3780935 602537809356 CD ECM JAZZ With Made in Chicago, an exhilarating live album, Jack DeJohnette celebrates a reunion

with old friends Roscoe Mitchell, Muhal Richard Abrams and Henry Threadgill. It was recorded at the 2013 Chicago Jazz Festival.

In 1962, DeJohnette, Roscoe Mitchell and Henry Threadgill were all classmates at Wilson Junior College on Chicago’s Southside, pooling energies and enthusiasms in jam sessions. Shortly thereafter Jack joined Muhal Richard Abrams’ Experimental Band, and Roscoe and Henry soon followed him. When Abrams co-founded the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians in 1965, DeJohnette, Mitchell and Threadgill were all deeply involved from the outset, presenting concerts and contributing to each other’s work under the AACM umbrella. Jack brought them together again for a very special concert at Chicago’s Millenium Park in August 2013, completing the group with the addition of bassist/cellist Larry Gray. The concert recording was mixed by Manfred Eicher and Jack DeJohnette at New York’s Avatar Studio. Made in Chicago is issued as the AACM begins its 50th anniversary year, and is both a powerful contemporary statement and a reminder of the wealth of great diverse music and innovative approaches to playing, writing and arranging which the organization has introduced over the years. The album features compositions by Roscoe Mitchell (“Chant” and “This”), Muhal Richard Abrams (“Jack 5”), Jack DeJohnette (“Museum of Time”), and Henry Threadgill (“Leave Don’t Go Away”), as well as the collective improvisation “Ten Minutes”. Personnel: Jack DeJohnette (drums), Henry Threadgill (alto saxophone, bass flute, bass recorder), Roscoe Mitchell (soprano and alto saxophones, wooden flute), Muhal Richard Abrams (piano), Larry Gray (double bass, cello) Marketing: Advertising in Jazzwise. Press: Confirmed reviews in The Guardian, Times, Financial Times, Evening Standard, Jazzwise, Jazz Journal, Drummer, Echoes, Irish Times, & various online reviews including The Jazz Breakfast, Marlbank, Dalston Sound, Jazz Views, UK Vibe + RTÉ Ten. Airplay on BBC Radio 3 (Late Junction & Jazz on 3), and local BBC Radio jazz programmes; Jazz FM (Mike Chadwick); UK Jazz Radio; RTÉ Lyric FM Tracks: Chant / Jack 5 / This / Museum of Time / Leave Don’t Go Away / Announcement / Ten Minutes

Vijay Iyer Trio - Break Stuff £9.49 4708937 602547089373 CD ECM JAZZ

Vijay Iyer’s long-running and widely-acclaimed trio with bassist Stephan Crump and drummer Marcus Gilmore, a band in existence since 2003, makes its ECM album debut.

‘Break Stuff’ is what happens after formal elements have been addressed. Vijay Iyer calls the break “a span of time in which to act. It’s the basis for breakdowns, breakbeats, and break dancing... it can be the moment when everything comes to life.” A number of the pieces are breakdowns of other Iyer constructions. Some are from a suite premiered at New York’s Museum of Modern Art, some, focusing on birds of New York, derive from ‘Open City’, a collaboration with novelist Teju Cole and large ensemble.

The trio energetically recasts everything it touches. “Hood” is a tribute to Detroit techno pioneer Robert Hood. On “Work”, Vijay pays homage to his “number one hero”, Thelonious Monk. “Countdown” reconsiders the classic Coltrane tune inside a rhythmic framework inspired by West African music. “Mystery Woman” is driven by compound pulses which owe a debt to South Indian drumming. Fast moving and quick-witted, the group has developed a strong musical identity of its own, with an emphasis on what Iyer calls “co-constructing”, exploring all the dynamics of playing together. Yet the three players also get abundant solo space and, in a reflective moment, Iyer plays a moving version of Billy Strayhorn’s “Blood Count” alone. Recorded in June 2014 at New York’s Avatar Studio and produced by Manfred Eicher, ‘Break Stuff’ is the third ECM release from Vijay Iyer. It follows the chamber music recording ‘Mutations’ (3764798) and the film-and-music project ‘Radhe Radhe: Rites of Holi’ (DVD 3783933). Personnel: Vijay Iyer (piano), Stephan Crump (double bass), Marcus Gilmore (drums)

Chris Potter Underground Orchestra – Imaginary Cities £9.49 4704075 602547040756 CD ECM JAZZ

‘Imaginary Cities’, an album of great power and expressive range, is the recording premiere of saxophonist Chris Potter’s new Underground Orchestra.

At the core of this larger ensemble (a band assembled originally in response to an invitation from Jazz at Lincoln Center in New York) is the personnel of his long-established Underground quartet - with Adam Rogers, Craig Taborn and Nate Smith - now joined by two bassists, a string quartet, and Potter’s old comrade from Dave Holland Quintet days, vibes and marimba man Steve Nelson. The title composition is a suite, panoramic in its reach, with movements subtitled “Compassion”, “Dualities”, “Disintegration” and “Rebuilding”. The scope of the work, and its contrasting moods and thematic development, inspire some of Potter’s finest playing. His saxes fly high above his idealised cityscapes or launch into dialogues or group improvising with its gifted inhabitants. Four further pieces - “Lament”, “Firefly”, “Sky” and “Shadow Self” - extend the feeling of the suite, successfully combining both tightly written material and very open areas involving all members of the orchestra. References are multi-idiomatic and multicultural, and Potter, who counts ‘Charlie Parker with Strings’ amongst his formative enthusiasms, had Arabic and Indian string sections in mind, as well as contemporary composition, when shaping this material. ‘Imaginary Cities’ was recorded in December 2013 in New York’s Avatar Studio and produced by Manfred Eicher. Personnel: Chris Potter (tenor and soprano saxophone, bass clarinet), Adam Rogers (guitars), Craig Taborn (piano), Steve Nelson (vibraphone and marimba), Fima Ephron (bass guitar), Scott Colley (acoustic bass), Nate Smith (drums), Mark Feldman, Joyce Hammann (violin), Lois Martin (viola), David Eggar (cello) Marketing: Advertising in Jazzwise. Robbins of the legendary Jawbox and Burning Airlines producing, 'To Us, The Beautiful!' is bulging with hooks and elegant melodies. Influences and inspirations for the record, a list that includes: the Waterboys, Leo Strauss, Ivor Cutler, future of the left, a Scottish girl, a pet rat in Southampton, John Cooper Clarke, the Egyptian Book of the Dead and "other things (that) are in there too," says Franz himself. Taraf de Haïdouks – Of Lovers, Gamblers and Parachute Skirts £8.49 CRAM237 876623007173 CD CRAMMED DISCS WORLD MUSIC To celebrate their 25th anniversary, the acclaimed Gypsy band Taraf de Haïdouks revisit some of the old styles which have enchanted audiences worldwide: Gypsy love songs,

poignant Romanian ballads and traditional dance tunes, alongside breathtaking Turkish-flavoured instrumentals.

For the first time since the sad demise of the older generation of vocalists, Ion Manole, Neculae Neacsu, Cacurica and Ilie Iorga, the band have taken a retrospective look at their career. To do this, they've enlisted former collaborators, such as superb vocalists Tsagoi, son of the legendary, late Neacsu, and Gheorghe Manole, son of Ion Manole, as well as the flamboyant singer Viorica Rudareasa, the woman who sang the band's iconic song "Dumbala Dumba".

The band was formed back in 1990, by musicians who previously had only been playing at their village's social occasions, baptisms, weddings, funerals, harvests etc. Since their first tour in 1991 Taraf de Haïdouks gained an international following and were soon to be acclaimed as "the best Gypsy band in the world" by the Independent. Their countless fans have included the late Yehudi Menuhin, the Kronos Quartet (with whom they've recorded and performed), actor Johnny Depp, fashion designer Yohji Yamamoto (who invited them to be models-cum-musicians for his Paris and Tokyo shows), choreographer Pina Bausch, and many more.

Adrian Sutton & John Tams – War Horse £5.55

CORDAF01 5060185410006 CD CORDAFONIA RECORDS SOUNDTRACK

BBC2 TV will broadcast the War Horse Prom at 5.25pm on 26 December 2014.

The score to the critically acclaimed National Theatre production of Michael Morpurgo's original story. Features original songs by John Tams and the voice of Tim

van Eyken with original music by Adrian Sutton. The show has drawn huge critical acclaim, much of it praising the music and songs, the CD has tremendous emotional impact in its own right. Winner of Olivier, Evening Standard and Critics’ Circle Awards. War Horse has played internationally to sell-out houses, including London, Broadway, North America, Japan, Canada, Australia, Berlin, Holland, South Africa. The War Horse Prom took place at this year's BBC 3 Proms on Sunday 3rd August and is a fully dramatised concert, including the War Horse puppets, based around Adrian Sutton's suite of music from the soundtrack of the NT theatre production of War Horse. The prom also features Gareth Malone and the Military Wives Choir. The musical score to the National Theatres acclaimed production of The War Horse is an integral part of the perfomance. Much has been made of the extraordinary puppets that bring the titular hero of Michael Morpurgo's original book to life, but the stage show takes a huge risk by not by not giving a voice to the creature who is the narrator of the original story. There are whole scenes without words, where the drama is provided entirely by puppets and the sweeping score. Add to that two of the finest voices in folk in Tim van Eyken and John Tams and this becomes a compelling CD in its own right. The songs, mostly written by Tams and voiced by van Eyken, are interspersed between the score's instrumental passages and create a narative thread of their own. Even for those not lucky enough to see the performance, there is much to enjoy here, whilst the audience are bound to delight in a souvenir that truly captures the emotive power of the production. Tracks: Devon At Peace / Only Remembered / Albert And Joey / The Year Turns Around Again / First Gallop / Learning To Plough / Wheel Of Fortune / The Scarlet An The Blue / Crossing The Channel / The Wounded / Devonshire Carol / The Charge / Hold The Line / Goodbye Dolly Grey / Friedrich's Theme / Emilie's Theme / Into The Crater / Pulling The Gun / The Year Turns Around Again (reprise) / The Tank / Joey's Long Night / Albert And Joey Reunited / Only Remembered (reprise)

Laura Jurd - Human Spirit £7.99 CC004 0702811649156 CD CHAOS COLLECTIVE JAZZ Following on from her critically acclaimed debut album 'Landing Ground', 'Human Spirit'

is the eagerly-anticipated second album from award-winning young trumpet player/composer Laura Jurd.

Originally commissioned by the EFG London Jazz festival 2013, the album is made up of a series of pieces written to feature Dublin-born vocalist Lauren Kinsella. The songs enter the realms of rock and folk music whilst providing a platform for improvisation and creative dialogue between the musicians - all of whom have been hand-picked as some of the UK's most adventurous improvisers and instrumentalists. The record sees Laura playing alongside fellow trumpet player Chris Batchelor - best known for his work with Loose Tubes and his avant-trad band Pigfoot. On trombone is Colm O'Hara - an active member of the Irish improvised music scene and trombonist on Lauren Kinsella's album 'Thought-Fox'. The unique, squawky honk of the bass sax, played by Mick Foster has a huge impact on the soundworld of the record. Think electric-Miles meets street band with a folkloric twist - the music often has a very English feel to it. Whilst there are many chorale-like moments reminiscent of the brass band tradition, Alex Roth's "skronky" electric guitar playing alongside the steady groove of the bass saxophone and drums gives the music an added dimension, sometimes taking influence from the UK's vast rock and pop heritage. Personnel: Laura Jurd (trumpet), Lauren Kinsella (vocals), Chris Batchelor (trumpet), Colm O'Hara (trombone), Alex Roth (guitar), Mick Foster (bass saxophone), Corrie Dick (drums) Press: Feature + review in Jazzwise (Feb issue) Reviews confirmed in The Guardian, Independent On Sunday, Irish Times, Jazz Journal, MOJO, Marlbank, Jazz Breakfast + LondonJazzNews Airplay confirmed on BBC Radio 3 (Jazz Line Up + Jazz on 3) + BBC Radio 2 (Jamie Cullum) Tour Dates 2015: 09

Larkin Poe - Kin £8.99 RHMU002 680474308033 LP RH MUSIC ROCK

The Atlanta-based sisters celebrate that unique genealogy and their own eccentricities with their debut full-length album, "Kin," on Restoration Hardware's label RH Music, produced by Chris Seefried (Fitz and the Tantrums, Lana Del Rey) in Los Angeles and

Damien Lewis (Rihanna, Rita Ora) in Atlanta.

Featuring tight vocal harmonies and dizzying instrumental riffs, the music of Larkin Poe ranges from Folk-Rock to Acoustic R&B, from grooving Jam Band to delicate singer-songwriter – Larkin Poe is versatile, entertaining, and totally authentic in all that they do.

People say madness runs in the family. They say the same about creativity and passion. That's good news for Larkin Poe's Rebecca and Megan Lovell, whose family tree includes tortured artist and creative genius Edgar Allen Poe. "We have a very colorful family history," explains lead singer/guitarist Rebecca, 23, who also plays mandolin and violin. "There were a lot of creative, hotheaded, and intelligent branches that went against the grain in our family tree. Our paternal grandfather suffered from schizophrenia, while our great, great, great, great grandfather, Larkin Poe, was a Civil War wagon driver turned historian and a distant cousin to Edgar Allen Poe. Growing up with their crazy stories definitely shaded our perception of normal. As artists, I think some of those innate eccentricities, passed down from generation to generation, have been even further exaggerated in us!" Megan, 25, who contributes lapsteel and dobro and vocals to the line-up, adds, "As sisters, we just wanted to pick a band name that had familial significance, so we decided to give a nod to our ancestors and take on the name Larkin Poe." “Roots-rock'n'soul” is how they describe their music. “It's our whole heart and soul mashed up into a musical form," explains Megan. Bob Harris Session link: http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p02d9nh6

In 2014, the band supported Elvis Costello on tour and were reported as being Glastonbury’s best dicovery by The Observer. "Jailbreak is a meaty glam stomp which nods to El Camino-era Black Keys." - Uncut "..a stunner, containing a confident new beefed-up sound" - The Express “the band took their listeners down a swampy bayou of gin-soaked folk rock, albeit with a gothic twist. Featuring everything from mandolin solos to a chilling style of lap steel guitar, the sister songwriters created a unique sonic texture” – The Daily Californian Tracks: Jailbreak / Don't / Stubborn Love / Dandelion / Crown Of Fire / Elephant / High Horse / Sugar High / Jesse / Banks Of Allatoona / We Intertwine / Overachiever

The songs on this debut album have been chosen simply because TRIO love singing them, and they range from favourite Welsh hymns to musical hits, together with a good measure of Welsh language and English pop classics of recent years. The common element is a strong melody, and songs which lend themselves naturally to harmony singing. And to complete the Deiniolen dimension – the remarkable slate quarry village where Bedwyr lives and where Emyr grew up - the ensemble from the local Silver Band is heard on three of the tracks. Steffan also has a connection with Deiniolen, as his grandmother, Elizabeth Ann Owen, was brought up in the village. Tracks: Lle'r Wyt Ti (To Where You Are) / Always There / Dros Gymru'n Gwlad / Hen Wr Ar Bont Y Bala / The Voyage / Angor / Pan Fwyf Yn Teimlo'n Unig Lawer Awr (Ellers) / Un Eiliad Mewn Oes (One Moment In Time) / Rwy'n Dy Weld Yn Sefyll / Anfonaf Angel / Wind Beneath My Wings / Angel Duw (New World Symphony)

Southern Tenant Folk Union – The Chuck Norris Project JOROCK019 0721802197537 CD JOHNNY ROCK RECORDS FOLK £7.99 JOROCK020 5060195516910 LP JOHNNY ROCK RECORDS FOLK £9.99 This January sees the release of the sixth Southern Tenant Folk Union album ‘The Chuck Norris Project’, the band’s most ambitious album to date. Conceptually the tracks are all named after

different movies from the actor’s career with each song taking the title as a starting point to discuss political ideas.

Band leader Pat McGarvey came upon the idea in autumn 2012 during the last US presidential election when Mr Norris and his wife released a campaign video urging voters to come out for Mitt Romney saying that a vote for Obama would lead to “a thousand years of darkness”, a statement he felt unhelpful to the debate. Musically eclectic the album remains an all-acoustic affair but takes in influences like 70’s disco, folk and soundtrack music mixing elements of composers like John Carpenter, Gene Clark and Fabio Frizzi. The album also features guest vocals from cult Americana songwriter Mike Ferrio (from the bands Tandy & Good Luck Mountain). The band have once again taken another leap in sound, structure and tone as they marry social conscience and comment on the world around them with songs, melodies and performances that engage. This album has achieved what it set out to and now on release STFU invite all to listen for themselves, although maybe it would be for the best if Chuck Norris never got to hear it. Southern Tenant Folk Union are Adam Bulley (Mandolin), Rory Butler (Acoustic Guitar/Lead Vocals), Steve Fivey (Cajon Drum/Percussion), Chris Purcell (Acoustic Guitar/Vocals), Craig Macfadyen (Double Bass), Pat McGarvey (5 String Banjo/Vocals) and Katherine Stewart (Fiddle/Vocals) “The Scottish band’s harmonies dance and drone, tackling songs that embrace the traditional ambience of The Unthanks and the experimentation of Tunng” - Andy Fyfe, 4 Stars, Q Magazine Tracks: Walker / The Presidents Man / The Octagon / Martial Law / Slaughter In San Francisco / Good Guys Wear Black / Expendable Too / Delta Force / Silent Rage / The Wrecking Crew - Part 1 (Eyes Right) / The Wrecking Crew - Part 2 (Eyes Left)* / Invasion USA */ A Force Of One*

Images and sounds of the dance, music, singing and stories from his youth in Yogyakarta never

left director Garin Nugroho. Opera Java is a tribute to the Javanese culture in which he grew up, as it kept lingering in his memory. A culture that is disappearing, making this film a requiem as

well. In this film one of the most performed episodes from the Ramayana epic receives a whole new interpretation.

'The abduction of Sinta' is one of the most performed episodes from the Ramayana epic. While Prince Rama is out, his beloved Sinta is abducted by the the giant king Rahwana. After Rama has freed her, after many wanderings and adventures, he kills Rahwana and tests Sinta's fidelity. She passes the test unharmed. More than 25 Indonesian musicians, dancers and actors contribute to this spectacle. The music is composed by Rahayu Supanggah, securing the future of old Javanese traditions by renewing them. He combines musical instruments from gamelan and folk music, he boldly allows the previously strictly tonal systems 'slendro' and 'pelog' to be combined and he even adds western instruments like a viola or even a full string quartet. Manika Kaur - I Bow to You Waheguru £7.99

USR0004 7640157611129 CD UNITED SOUND RECORDS WORLD MUSIC

Manika Kaur's second album I Bow To You Waheguru is an evocative meditation on Sikh spirituality and a sonic exploration of contemporary Asian music.

Manika's voice is velvet: rich and luxuriating, coloured deep with the contours of her gentle, echoing tone. Her music radiates light, each note illuminated by her profound passion for Sikh spirituality and the devotional practice of singing kirtan. Manika is joined by a host of fine musicians on this album, each contributing their own tender tones to the brew. Title track 'I Bow To You Waheguru' produced by Talvin Singh features cascading swarmandal (Indian zither) alongside resonant strings, tabla, synths, electronic drum-set and punctuating percussion. Soumik Datta (sarod) and Bernhard Schimpelsberger (percussion) who together form the duo Circle of Sound also guest throughout the album. The duo are heard on tracks 'Raam Japo Ji', 'Putaa Mataa' and 'Tu Danaa'. 'Aukhee Gharee' features Jyotsna Srikanth's honeyed violin, swooping and spiralling atop dancing pizzicato accompaniment. The track 'Gur Ram Das Rakho Sarnaee', bansuri virtuoso Rakesh Chaurasia adds flute interjections, entering into thoughtful dialogue with Manika's melting vocal lines. 'Putaa Mataa' is the most up-tempo track on the album with firmly sung melody motifs and plunging piano chords. The words are taken from traditional shabad 'Putaa Mataa Ki Asees' and recount a mother's wish that her child may live a spiritually rich and loving life. 'Waheguru (The Journey)' matches Manika's voice with Francesca Ter-Berg's expressive cello. Tracks: Aukhee Gharhee / Ram Japo Ji / Gur Ram Das / Pootaa Mataa / Tu Danaa / Waheguru (The Journey) / I Bow to You Waheguru

Rachel Barton Pine, Matthew Lipman, Academy of St. Martin in the Fields & Sir Neville Marriner – Mozart: Complete Violin Concertos; Sinfonia Concertante, K364 £12.74

AV2317 822252231724 CD2 AVIE CLASSICAL

On this album violinist Rachel Barton Pine, violist Matthew Lipman, the Academy of St Martin in the Fields and Sir Neville Marriner revel in the transcendent beauty and operatic passion of

Mozart's music. In celebration on Mozart's birthday on 27 January and Sir Neville Marriner's 90th year, Billboard chart-topping violinist Rachel Barton Pine performs the five Mozart Violin Concertos, as well as the Sinfonia Concertante, with Sir Neville Marriner and the Academy of St Martin in the Fields. The recording is Pine's first with AVIE Records and marks the recording debut of violist Matthew Lipman, a Rachel Elizabeth Barton Foundation recipient. Pine continues to perform the complete five Mozart Violin Concertos in a single evening's concert and feels that playing them as a cycle has deepened her relationship with them. She has drawn on a tremendous amount of research in crafting her interpretation. Her study of the composer's operas strengthened her appreciation for the drama and playfulness of Mozart's violin concertos, and she highlights the subtle nuances of the concerti's ever-changing dialogue in her performances. Pine revels in Mozart's gift for improvisation, particularly in the little variations in the repeating rondo theme in the last movement of the A major concerto. Personnel: Rachel Barton Pine (violin), Matthew Lipman (viola), Academy of St. Martin in the Fields, Sir Neville Marriner (conductor) Praise for Rachel Barton Pine: "She is one of the most honest of violin players I have ever heard... And it's a great attraction in this [project], there is no utter embellishment, everything is there for a purpose and musically speaking it makes such good sense." - Sir Neville Marriner "Striking and charismatic...she demonstrated a bravura technique and soulful musicianship." - The New York Times CD 1: Violin Concerto No. 4 in D, K218 1. Orchestra of the Swan & Kenneth Woods – Hans Gál: The Four Symphonies £12.74

AV2322 822252232226 CD2 AVIE CLASSICAL

The cycle of the four Symphonies by Hans Gál, performed by Kenneth Woods and Stratford-upon-Avon based Orchestra of the Swan, in remastered versions presented together for the

first time. In 2013 Kenneth Woods and the Stratford-upon-Avon based Orchestra of the Swan made musical history when they completed the first ever recorded cycle of the Symphonies by Hans Gál. By dusting off the Austrian émigré composer's gorgeously melodic and finely crafted scores, which remained relatively dormant throughout the 20th century, Woods has captured the imagination and introduced a new generation to Gál's wide-ranging and extensive oeuvre. The four symphonies, each originally released alongside those of Robert Schumann, are re-mastered and presented all together for the first time, opening the door to further exploration and discovery. Personnel: Orchestra of the Swan, Kenneth Woods (conductor) Critical acclaim for Kenneth Woods' and Orchestra of the Swan's Hans Gal: "Hats off to conductor Kenneth Woods and his Orchestra of the Swan who have been making a case for Gál's elegantly built orchestral pieces...Here's hoping this is the beginning of a substantial Gál revival." - National Public Radio's All Things Considered (reviewing Symphony No. 3, AV2230) "The Orchestra of the Swan provide a quietly compelling account, relishing the many solos, duos and textural intricacies that Gál wrings from his orchestra." - Gramophone, Editor's Choice (on Symphony No. 4, AV2231) "Beautifully played...transcendent...this orchestra seems to breathe together." - BBC Music Magazine (on Symphony No. 1, AV2233) Marketing: Advertising in Gramophone, BBC Music Magazine + Symphony Magazine CD 1: Symphony No. 1 in D major, Op. 30 1. Irina Muresanu, Ethan Filner, Jennifer Kloetzel & Sarah Bob – Lift - Chamber Music by Elena Ruehr £8.49

AV2319 822252231922 CD AVIE CLASSICAL ‘Lift’ combines solo and chamber works for strings and piano by award-winning composer Elena

Ruehr, all with references to older music in some way and frequently inspired and influenced by other people.

Award-winning composer Elena Ruehr's AVIE debut, 'Averno' (AV2263), introduced three of her big and bold works for choir and orchestra. For her follow up, Ruehr scales down to intimate solo and chamber works for strings and piano, all with references to older music in some way. Baroque elements infuse Klein Suite for solo violin, Prelude Variations for viola and piano, and The Scarlatti Effect for piano trio. The three movements of the jazz-tinged Second Violin Sonata, are dedicated to people who have influenced Ruehr's work: her composition teacher William Bolcom, jazz teacher Eddie Russ, and Oscar Peterson whom Ruehr met on New Year's Eve 1980. Adrienne and Amy was written in honour of the pioneering American composer Amy Beach and her biographer Adrienne Fried Block. The virtuosic and lyrical title track for solo cello was inspired by Nobel Prize-winner Malala Yousafzai, the Pakistani school pupil and education activist. Boston-based Ruehr, whose wide-ranging works are performed from coast to coast, teaches at MIT. In 2014 she was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship. Personnel: Irina Muresanu (violin), Ethan Filner (viola), Jennifer Kloetzel (cello), Sarah Bob (piano) Critical acclaim for Elena Ruehr: "Sumptuously scored and full of soaring melodies and piquant harmonies." - The New York Times "Music with heart and a forceful sense of character and expression." - The Washington Post "Clothed in rhythmic and harmonic complexity that engages the emotions and stimulates the musical mind." - Audiophile Audition Tracks: 1. Constantin Emanuel & Ton Koopman – J.S. Bach: Constantin Emanuel Sings from Schemellis Gesangbu £8.49

CC72263 608917226324 CD CHALLENGE CLASSICS CLASSICAL This recording of the “Musicalisches Gesang-Buch”, a set of songs published by the 18th century German composer Georg Christian Schemelli’s but more regularly attributed to J.S. Bach, features the highly-talented 15 year old boy soprano Constantin Emanuel. He is accompanied on organ by the great baroque keyboard player and early music specialist Ton Koopman. 18th century German composer Georg Christian Schemelli is known to us primarily because of the book of songs “Musicalisches Gesang-Buch”, which was published in Leipzig in 1736. This book contains 954 songs, 69 of which have melodies and a figured bass. It was long assumed that Johann Sebastian Bach, who is mentioned in the preface to the volume, played a major part in the completion of these songs, or at least in writing the figured bass lines, and they are included in the corpus of the BWV catalogue. This CD displays the talents of the singer Constantin Emanuel. Although he had recently turned 15 Constantin Emanuel is still singing as a boy soprano, something quite unusual these days but absolutely normal in Bach's time, when boys' voices would often break at around the age of 16. This type of voice is rarely heard these days, the most recent being that of Sebastian Hennig whose voice can be followed from the age of 11 through to 15 on many of Gustav Leonhardt's recordings of Bach cantatas. Personnel: Constantin Emanuel (boy soprano), Ton Koopman (organ) Tracks: J.S. BACH: 1. Vater unser im Himmelreich (from Clavier Übung III) BWV 683 2. Ich steh an deiner Krippe hier BWV 469 3. Grateful Dead - Dick's Picks Vol. 13—Nassau Coliseum, Uniondale, NY 5/6/81 (3-CD Set) £25.99 RLGM4003272PMI 848064003274 CD3 IMPORT EXLUSIVE ROCK

This show, which appears here in its entirety, was already something of a legend among Dead collectors before archivist Dick Latvala selected it for Dick's Picks Vol. 13.

Only the second concert (at the time) from the '80s to be tapped for the series, it was (and is) widely regarded to be among the best performances of the decade, particularly notable for a stunning second-set sequence featuring "He's Gone" leading into the last-ever performance of the "Caution Jam," which then morphed into the first performance of the "Spanish Jam" in five years. A real high point of the era. But before that, you are treated to a hidden (and fiery) 35-minute version of "Scarlet Begonias"/"Fire on the Mountain" from a show at the same venue hailing from 1979, as well as a very tight first set winding up with a rollicking "Deal!" A good one for fans of Brent Mydland, too. Out of print for years! CD 1: Alabama Getaway / Greatest Story Ever Told / They Love Each Other / Cassidy / Jack-A-Roe / Little Red Rooster / Dire Wolf / Looks Like Rain / Big Railroad Blues / Let It Grow / Deal CD 2: New Minglewood Blues / High Times / Lost Sailor / Saint of Circumstance / Scarlet Begonias / Fire on the Mountain CD 3: He’s Gone / Caution/Spanish Jam / Drums / Jam / The Other One / Goin’ Down the Road Feeling Bad / Wharf Rat / Good Lovin' / Don’t Ease Me In

Jackie Moore – The Complete Atlantic Recordings £13.99 RLGM4003252PMI 848064003250 CD2 IMPORT EXLUSIVE SOUL/R&B

Florida-born soul singer Jackie Moore began her recording career in 1968 with singles on the Shout and Wand labels. However it was her first release for Atlantic Records in early 1970 that

catapulted her to national prominence in the U.S with "Precious, Precious," a lilting, gentle slice of Southern soul that remains a timeless R&B classic.

Working initially with Dave Crawford (and later with renowned co-producer Brad Shapiro) at Criteria Studios in Miami, Jackie cut 21 tracks over between November 1969 and June 1972. In late 1972, she began working with the Philadelphia team known as The Young Professionals, consisting of singer Phil Hurtt together with Atlantic A&R man LeBaron Taylor and singer/songwriter Bunny Sigler (who was later replaced by guitarist, Tony Bell, producer Thom Bell's younger sibling). The result was her second biggest Atlantic hit, "Sweet Charlie Babe," a Top 20 R&B and Top 50 pop charted single Real Gone Music (in association with SoulMusic Records) is proud to present Jackie's entire output for Atlantic with a total of previously unreleased tracks. CD 1: Precious, Precious / Willpower / If This Was the Last Song (Unreleased) / Cover Me / Change Me Not, I Love You (Unreleased) / Wonderful, Marvelous / Sometimes It’s Got to Rain (in Your Love Life) / I Forgive You (Unreleased) / Here Am I (Unreleased) / Something in a Look / Time / Young Girls (Unreleased) / I Just Started (Unreleased) / Darling Baby / Do Wrong Man (Unreleased) / Set Me Free (Unreleased) CD 2: What a Man / They Tell Me of an Uncloudy Day / It Ain’t Who You Know / I Love Every Little Thing About You (Unreleased) / Lead Me, Guide Me (Unreleased) / Sweet Charlie Babe / If / Both Ends Against the Middle / Clean Up Your Own Yard / Joe (Unreleased) / Behind Closed Doors / Tell Me A Lie (Unreleased) / A Promise Is A Promise (Unreleased) / Tyrone (Unreleased)

Redd Foxx - You Gotta Wash Your Ass £7.99 RLGM4003262PMI 848064003267 CD IMPORT EXLUSIVE HUMOUR Ne'er a truer word was spoken! And, lest someone be offended by the title of this album, let's

just remember that this is Redd Foxx, the guy who practically invented off-colour humour! And this album, released by Atlantic in 1976 and the comic legend's first album release in 12 years, was actually pretty tame compared to the "party records" that Redd recorded for the Dootone label that were so, um, salty that record stores had to hide them under the counter. That's not to say, though, that this record isn't downright raunchy at times; as befitting the man who paved the way for Richard Pryor, Chris Rock and even Andrew Dice Clay, there are plenty of unbleeped three-, four and even twelve-letter words! So consider yourself warned. Actually, though, the ones who needed warning were the audience members at the Apollo Theatre that night; Redd unmercifully picks on them with such routines as 'I Hope Your Dog Dies'; 'Who Does Your Hair?'; 'Jaws On That Hippo', and 'You're Kind of Dumb and Ugly' , while he addresses some of his favorite topics with 'Cancer Better Not F—- with My Body'; 'My Old Lady Wanted to Make Love All the Time'; 'I Talk About Sex Mostly', and 'Close Your Legs' among the comic riffs whose titles we can (barely) print. Those familiar with Redd's work only via Sanford and Son definitely need to check this out.

Main Ingredient - L.T.D./Black Seeds £9.49 RLGM4003282PMI 848064003281 CD IMPORT EXLUSIVE SOUL/R&B Originally formed in 1964 and known as The Poets, the New York-based trio of Luther Simmons Jr., Tony Silvester and Donald McPherson recorded a couple of singles for RCA Records before a

name change in 1968 to The Main Ingredient. Their first album, L.T.D. (from the initials of each member), was released in 1970 and consisted of six original songs penned by the group along with a medley of two songs written by Jimmy Webb, "By the Time I Get to Phoenix" and "Wichita Lineman," (both originally recorded by Glen Campbell) and a cover of The Beatles' "Get Back." Production was primarily by renowned arranger Bert DeCoteaux. After a follow-up album, Tasteful Soul, the group self-produced their third release, 1971's Black Seeds, which boasted two singles with "Black Seeds keep On Growing," a black empowerment anthem penned by McPherson, reaching No. 15 on the U.S R&B charts. Sadly, after a sudden and unexpected illness, McPherson succumbed to leukemia before the LP was released in 1972. Real Gone Music in association with SoulMusic Records is proud to present these two rare albums on CD for the first time worldwide along with a bonus B-side, "Psychedelic Ride,". CD 1: Can’t Stand Your Love / You’ve Been My Inspiration / I Was Born to Lose You / Magic Shoes / By the Time I Get to Phoenix / Wichita Lineman / Brotherly Love / The Girl I Left Behind / Life Won’t Be the Same (Without You) / Una Bella Melodia Braziliania / Get Back / Psychedelic Ride / Black Seeds Keep On Growing / I’m Leaving This Time / Movin’ On / Baby Change Your Mind / Another Day Has Come / You Ain’t Got It No Way / I’ve Fallen for You / Don’t Wonder Why / Just Say It Again / It’s So Sweet (Loving You) / Why Can’t We All Unite
