Message from the Executive Director

It is hard to believe that it’s been a year I’ve had the opportunity of working at Chicopee. I felt it proper to provide an overview: past, present and future.

Let me begin with acknowledging Chicopee’s 75th Anniversary which officially takes place on December 29, 2009. I often wonder what those pioneers were thinking when they decided to open a ski hill in the middle of no where. In speaking with some of our members who have been skiing at Chicopee for years, they talk about the Great Spirit the Club brought to the community. Many people reflect on the time their families spent here. Even today their children are coming back with their families to enjoy the same culture and experience. This is what makes Chicopee such a great facility for the whole region. A few have often indicated that if the walls could speak many stories could be told. We do have a committee working on events to help us celebrate the 75th Anniversary. Keep watching our newsletters and the local papers for upcoming events.

Where are we now? Well Chicopee, “your year round playground” can boast in excess of 4500 members along with an annual

count of approximately 275,000 visits to our facility. Winter is no longer the only time the facility is vibrant with an ever increasing usage in the off season. The facility is a significant part and landmark of a neighborhood. It is often utilized as a bench mark or a showcasing for what makes our community and region so popular to move to or to consider when opening a business. Members and visitors to our facility come from all over to take advantage of what

This spring will see the launch of both Run & Bike Clinics. These classes will run throughout the week and will focus around a range of ability levels from beginner through to intermediate / advanced.

Clinics will be led by a bike or run coach and will consist of a proper warm up, a guided run or ride, and cool down. Each week will cover a different topic such as hill climbs, trail running, cornering with speed, efficient riding or running, handling downhill’s, etc.

In addition to these clinics, Chicopee will also be introducing Boot Camps! Boot camps will provide a very focused opportunity to get in shape with a group of friends, coworkers, wedding party, etc. Groups can sign up with a trainer and pick a day and time that suits their schedule well. Boot camps will use a variety of training tactics to improve fitness, agility, flexibility, strength, and cardio vascular health. Using the outdoors & natural features keeps boot camps fun & exciting… something that concrete gym’s and cumbersome fitness machines simply cannot offer.

Melodina Herman passed away Saturday, January 10th at 10:00pm, three years to the hour after she was first admitted to the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto. She had a three-year fight with cancer, HLH and a compromised immune system. Melodina is an inspiration and a hero to people all over the world. Her struggle is truly epic. She taught all of us so much in so many ways. The primary focus of her life was ski racing. Like many young people, she hoped one day to represent Canada at the Olympics. During her career, Mel raced for Chicopee, Caledon and the Huron Alpine Development Team. She raced in both Canada and the US.

Message from the Executive Director...Continued from previous page

The goal we work towards is removing the economic barrier for children who wish to participate in any of our programs and activities but do not have the means to do it. We’re proud every time we can give back to the community.

Another significant position about Chicopee is its contribution to the community from a business perspective. This facility is not City or Government owned but rather a not for profit self sustaining business operation that reinvests all of its profits back to improve its products and services for the benefit of users from throughout the region. It pays the City taxes of $90k per year, contributes $5 million to help pump the local economy through employment, etc. the community should be proud of this.

A bigger impact revolves around the facility’s ability to provide people of all ages and abilities a variety of unique experiences. It becomes a social place for people to meet on a regular basis. It’s where families come to play together and enjoy the great outdoors so close to home. It’s where we want to continue providing our community with opportunities for healthy lifestyles.

So now we’re talking about the future. Like many other organizations or businesses we need to continue repositioning ourselves to maintain our existing facilities, expand to manage the growth in our region and ways to attract tourists to come discover this great area of the province. Chicopee is preparing to launch a significant legacy building plan

to ensure the next 75 years will have a significant impact on the region.

To do this, we’ll require the support from our community at large and the region as a whole with our various campaigns to make things happen. We’ll be asking the corporate community to jump on board, the various levels of government and the general public. We trust we can count on everyone to jump on board to turn this into reality.

A few projects being considered are: 2 new lift replacements ($1.5m each), high pressure water lines for snowmaking ($750,000), and developing three new runs along Fairway Road to include water and lift capacity ($3.5m). Chicopee is also exploring some new business ventures to continue making it a viable year round business.

We understand the economy is becoming a challenge however it is important for people to have places to go to enjoy the great outdoors. We want Chicopee to be a contributor to the vibrant business environment in our region.

Chicopee – “It’s where you belong”

The great outdoors at Chicopee provides you with a unique opportunity to ‘belong’ with friends and family. Chicopee offers programs for all ages and abilities, available at many different times to meet everyone’s busy schedule. Call us at 519 894-5610 to enquire about these or better yet check us out at

www.skichicopee.com. Watch for our new programs being launched this spring right

through to next December.

On your own or new in town, ask about our new Hillside Club that has been created to offer year round social opportunities for our members or others who would like to join for a nominal membership fee. Programs and different social activities are being planned on a year round base.

If your organization does annual fund raising activities for great

community causes, why not call us about the fundraising initiatives available for you at Chicopee. We have packages available to generate significant funds for your cause. We can accommodate a few thousand people on our slopes, even giving you a private ski day event. Call us to discover more.

For employers why not treat your staff to a winter team building event on the slopes. Good opportunity to work hard and play hard. Chicopee also has year round opportunities for your organization. What a great setting for corporate meetings and/or barbeques. Chicopee has unique gifts for the special clients or employee recognition programs.

Tennis – the Sport for Lifeby Doreen Tschanz

About Chicopee

Did you realize that “Tennis is the sport for life”? It is true. What other sport is played at the age of 5 and until the age 95? Even when your legs cannot support you, tennis can be played in a wheelchair. Why is this possible? The reason is “Progressive Tennis”.

What is the only traditional sport with growth in the past 5 years? Tennis is that sport. Why? The reason is a new “twist” on marketing tennis called “Cardio Tennis”.

What are benefits of HarTru (clay) courts versus hard surface courts? Read on.

Why does the ball go into the net or out of the court long or wide when you hit it? It is simple.

The following will explain the above statements and questions.

Progressive Tennis is a tennis program for 5-9 year olds which allows young players to learn and play the game more quickly, efficiently and successfully. Progressive Tennis uses a systematic progression of court sizes, balls, and racquets, to scale the game down to an appropriate level for 5-9 year olds. Tennis companies now carry the full line of half-court and ¾-court progressive equipment including graduated balls, racquets, lay down lines and nets.

Progressive Tennis allows players to play quickly and successfully. In Progressive Tennis, the philosophy is that tennis is a great and fun game to play and the quicker and more skillfully a player can play the more fun it is. Each stage not only has specific equipment to aid success, but particular skills to develop as well. It is recommended a Game-Based Approach be used. The coach’s job is to get them to play, and help them learn to play better.

Simply put, “Progressive Tennis” is used as a developmental tool to allow young children to improve their overall tennis skills faster so they can transition to the regular court with more ease. The new balls also help adult beginners and seniors as these balls are slower and easier to react to the ball. The child’s racquet length is determined by holding the grip of the racquet so that the racquet hangs down to the ground at their side. The racquet should not touch the ground but be an inch above the ground. Chicopee teaching is based on Progressive Tennis.

Wheelchair Tennis is compatible with regular players of comparative play level.

Cardio Tennis is a new, fun, group activity, featuring drills that allow players of all abilities to achieve an ultimate, high energy workout. Taught by a teaching professional, Cardio Tennis includes a warm-up, cardio workout and cool-down phases. Cardio Tennis is an excellent way for new players or present players to burn calories and get in shape. Chicopee will be a Cardio Tennis Centre starting in May 2009.

Major benefits are:

• Heart rates are consistently elevated to the aerobic training zone

• More calories are burned than in singles or doubles

• There are short cycles of high intensity workout and periods of rest similar to interval training

• The focus is mainly on getting a great workout so it does not matter what level of player you are

•Improve your tennis skills

•More FUN than sitting or running on a machine

Check out the Cardio Tennis website for more information at www.partners.cardiotennis.com

The following will explain what HarTru is and benefits of playing on Chicopee’s HarTru clay courts.

Har-Tru Clay Courts

The material used on HarTru Tennis courts comes from the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia. It is billion-year-old Pre-Cambrian met basalt that is mined, crushed, screened and mixed in precise proportions to produce a stable but porous surface. The stability happens because the tiny particles are angular and graded. Smaller particles fill in between larger particles but do not lock up and porous by allowing water to enter between the particles. The particles are hard like industrial diamonds.

The granular HarTru surface is a shock-absorbing cushion by allowing players to slide into their returns; thus preventing joint-jarring stops as on hard court surfaces. Studies show that players are seven times less likely to be injured on surfaces allowing sliding. In the USA, junior training centres are using HarTru surfaces to train the youth as the HarTru surface is easier on the growth plates in the young bodies and thus causing less long-lasting injuries to the future players. Over 30-year-old players are able to compete in tournaments and play

recreationally on HarTru surface because of less stress on joints.

On HarTru surfaces the ball has a slower bounce allowing longer rallies, greater stroke variety and a more controlled game. Stamina, strategy and mental toughness come into play. Most of the world’s top players started playing on clay. With HarTru surfaces, it is easy to follow the balls on a non-glare surface. The natural green HarTru will not stain clothing as does “red clay” surfaces. Wear and tear on shoes and tennis equipment is reduced.

HarTru Courts versus Hard Courts

• Reduces injuries – 85% less injuries than hard courts

• Lessens severity of injuries – Repeated, excessive impact exacerbates injuries

• Sliding reduces stress of court impact – More stress on back, knees and ankles

•Allows frequent play – Body needs recovery time

•Surface is cooler – Can fry an egg

• More durable to cold climate – Crack and heave causing costly repairs

The outcome of your tennis shots relates to the “Five Ball Controls”. These five simple principles are Direction, Height, Distance, Speed and Spin. The technique (the way you hit the ball) that you use to implement these five controls will influence your shot outcome (what the ball did). Usually it is a very simple and quick adjustment to your technique that will result with a major change giving you consistent good shots. For instance, if the ball goes into the net too often, try increasing the low to high path of your racquet at impact. If you get frustrated with your tennis because of unforced errors, book a lesson. It is quick and painless. You might even like to learn more of the simple principles of tennis or learn how to add spin to your serve or ground strokes. The more I learn about tennis, the more I love the game and want to learn more. Tennis is an evolving sport with new techniques, tactics and technology with which to keep up-to-date.

Hopefully now you have more insight and knowledge of the wonderful SPORT FOR LIFE!

Chicopee Ski & Summer Resort is a vital part of the communities (Kitchener, Waterloo, Guelph, Cambridge & surrounding areas) that we zealously serve. Offering year round recreational programming to four of the “Best Cities to Live in Canada” is a task we take seriously. We don’t just want to be good…we strive to be awesome in all that we offer; in all that we do. Chicopee opened in 1934 as a ski hill and the energies of those founders has continued to this day as we strive to be a year round playground to the people we serve. Chicopee is one of the most widely visited multi-sport facilities in southwestern Ontario. The always expanding facilities throughout the 165 acres include fourteen ski and snowboard runs, a renowned ski and snowboard school, five Har-Tru (clay) tennis courts, three Olympic-regulation beach volleyball courts, a seven+ kilometer single and double track mountain bike trail system, dirt bike park (two pump tracks, seven jump lines & a flow course), wooden-feature bike park, adventure challenge centre teambuilding facility, 25 000 square foot chalet with meeting rooms and full food and beverage services.

The Chicopee Ski Club is incorporated as a not-for-profit entity owned by its members and expertly

managed by the Executive Director and Senior Management team. Chicopee leases the lands we operate on in 20 year terms from the Grand River Conservation Authority. All facilities, lifts, equipment etc. on the land is wholly owned by the Club.

An elected Board of Directors of ten volunteer members represent the membership as a governance board and assist in providing support to the organization. An enthusiastic team of employees conducts all of Chicopee’s daily operations – 30 full time year– round and 400+ seasonal and part-time employees.

Mission Statement To provide the best possible year-round recreational

experience and facility to the local community and beyond.

In the midst of enjoying the winter season at Chicopee, it’s important to be up to date on all the fun that’s headed your way this spring. Many skiers and boarders who enjoy the slopes in the winter don’t know about everything that is available to them at Chicopee during our warm weather seasons. There’s a reason we’re Your Year Round Playground!

Our summer camps are now available for registration once again. If the summer of 2008 was any indication, these camps will be some of the most popular in the region. With 1000 campers visiting Chicopee in 2008, this summer will most definitely be an exciting one. Camps are available in 3 unique streams – Multi Sport, Biking, and Tennis; with a huge variety of age ranges and specialty programs available within each stream. Chicopee’s camps keep the kids coming back for more!

The spring will see the re-opening of Chicopee’s BIKE PARK. 2008 was its inaugural year, and proved to be a HUGE hit with bikers of all ages from all over southwestern Ontario. 2009 promises to deliver even more excitement. Our park has a

new permanent location, which will feature more dirt jumps, bigger pump tracks, a “street feature” section, as well as a full beginners’ area. Lessons, camps, clinics, and programs will all be available. If you are a biker of any kind, you really must come and check out the park. It really is fun for all ages. Day passes and memberships will be available…

look for them on sale later this winter!

Chicopee’s new 18 hole Frisbee golf course will also begin accepting visitors in the spring of ’09. The article in this newsletter provides a little more insight into this project… definitely something worth a read!

Spring , Summer, and Fall will also see visits from numerous Corporate groups, school groups, and teams. Chicopee’s Adventure Challenge Course, Beach Volleyball courts, Tennis Courts, Disc Golf Course, and Bike Trails, make awesome venues for a wide variety of teambuilding events, office socials, parties, and educational programs. If you manage

staff, teach kids, are part of a team, or simply enjoy having fun… you really need to come check us out.

And there’s more in the works… Chicopee will be unveiling new programs for the spring summer and fall that will be targeted towards kids, adults, families, and corporate groups. You’ll want to explore fitness programs, bike classes & programs, tournaments, birthday party options, and much more!

Stay tuned because there will be lots of action going on this summer with opportunities for

everyone to get involved. Chicopee is a self sustaining operation that is always focused on reinventing itself and continually delivering fun for everyone.

What’s Next? The Chicopee Green Season “FORE” There’s something new in the air this spring…After helping local riders and bike enthusiasts

find a place to call home last summer, Chicopee is proud to be launching another new & exciting facility for 2009.

This year, the new thing in the air will be discs. Flying discs to be more precise… and not of the alien abduction variety! Chicopee is excited to be launching a full 18 hole Disc Golf course.

Chicopee has partnered with the Waterloo Organization of Disc Sports to deliver a full service Disc Golf Facility. Chicopee’s course will be the first for the Kitchener – Waterloo region, adding to the existence of 2 other smaller courses in Guelph and Cambridge. Chicopee is proud to be able to boast that we will be the only facility operating with a full clubhouse, disc rentals & sales, public tournaments, camps, corporate events, and school programs. Chicopee’s course will truly have it all!

Disc Golf is a grass roots sport quickly growing in popularity. Played in a similar manner to the Golf game we all know, Disc Golfers use specialized Frisbees to work their way to the target, and aim for a trap-like basket rather than a hole. Disc Golf has become popular because it is an activity that

requires no previous experience to enjoy, carries a miniscule expense to get into and play, can be enjoyed alone or in groups, and has tremendous family appeal. Disc Golf courses also blend seamlessly into the natural environment in which they are built. Aside from occasionally cutting the grass, Disc Golfers use natural obstacles such as

trees, and shrubs, water, and rock as challenges that must be dealt with. Courses are not manicured, pesticides are not used. An outing on the Disc Golf course lets you explore the outdoors as it exists, with no damage or alterations.

Disc golf is typically a slightly faster paced game, with a full round taking anywhere from 2 to 3 hours. Rules are simple, as is course etiquette. Players are simply asked to enjoy themselves, play

in the spirit of fun, and leave the environment as you find it.

Chicopee’s course will undergo the design phase in late winter, and will see action in terms of the installation in early spring; getting out to enjoy a round will be possible in the spring of 2009.

If you are looking for something fun to do with the family, a teambuilding event for your office, an out of classroom experience for your school, or simply want to come out and try something new, this is really something you will want to experience this summer. Chicopee will be hosting daily walk-on play, as well as putting together awesome teambuilding tournaments for corporate groups, and cooperative programs for schools. Be sure to stay posted as more information will be shared in the weeks to come.

Chicopee is excited to continually develop is fun & exciting offering of programs and activities… we are always pursuing new ideas in the name of fun… Chicopee, Your Year Round Playground.
