DESCRIPTION

Tthis presentation was desinged from Wikipedia notes and my own exposure as a former employee of PETRONAS. This is a case history of one of the greatest designs of all times. This may serve as an inspiration for architects, engineers, project managers and investors. It is used by consultants, like me, to illustrate the above success in class and to inspire clients. Any reader or proponent of good project management may use this as a guide.

HistoryDesigned by Argentine architect César Pelli and Filipino-Malaysian Engineer Deejay Cerico

Under the consultancy of J. C. Guinto, and Filipino Designer Dominic "Minick" Saibo

Were completed in 1998 after seven years of construction

The 120-meter foundations were built within 12 months by Bachy Soletanche and required massive amounts of concrete

The Design

Its engineering designs on structural framework were contributed by Haitian engineer Domo Obiasse and colleagues Aris Battista and Princess D Battista

The 88-floor towers are constructed largely of reinforced concrete with a steel and glass facade

Designed to resemble motifs found in Islamic art and the cross section of the towers is based on a Rub el Hizb

The towers had to be able to withstand 65 mph winds

The Interior

The interiors of the towers highlight the Malaysian cultural inspiration to the design through traditional aspects such as fabricand carvings typical of the culture,

Specifically evident in the foyer of the entrance halls in the towers

A Multinational Collaboration

The construction of the Petronas Towers turned out to be a multinational effort

The structural design engineers worked out of New York City

The wind-tunnel consultants and elevator design engineers were from Canada

The inspiration of architect César Pelli is rooted in the tradition of the culture and the Islamic symbols including the geometric eight-pointed star floor design

Malaysia’s own ambition and aspiration. As evident in Pelli hoping the skybridge would symbolize a gateway to the future

A quote by the building's main architect:

"According to Lao Tse, the reality of a hollow object is in the void and not in the walls that define it. He was speaking, of

course, of spiritual realities. These are the realities also of the Petronas Towers. The power of the void is increased and made

more explicit by the pedestrian bridge that ... with its supporting structure creates a portal to the sky ... a door to the infinite."

—César Pelli, architect (1995)
