The Duke of Burgundy (18)

Fri 13 - Wed 18 MarchDir. Peter Strickland, UK, 2014, 104 mins.Cast. Sidse Babett Knudsen, Chiara D’Anna, Eugenia Caruso

Dazzlingly dark melodrama about two women who express their love for each other through ritual sado-masochism. This might easily have tipped into the trashy, but is instead a bold and sensual exploration of power dynamics and female intimacy.

The Philadelphia Story (U)

Sun 15 - Thur 19 MarchDir. George Cukor, US, 1940, 110 minsCast. Katherine Hepburn, Cary Grant, James Stewart, Ruth Hussey

Classic Hollywood comedy with peak-form performances throughout. Donald Ogden Stewart’s script sparkles with wit and pithy social comment, while the moonlit amorous shenanigans fizz with memorably woozy eroticism.

At first, Alzheimer’s means losing her way around the streets of Manhattan, but soon it’s much more. But even as it puts her marriage to the test, Alice’s new condition does provide the opportunity to reconnect with her youngest daughter, Lydia (Kristen Stewart), with whom she’s never seen eye-to-eye. The fact that Alice is a lifelong student of language and communication proves a powerful resource in her fight against mental decline, but it also means that she has a uniquely troubling understanding of what’s to come.
