On behalf of Plumpton High School, congratulations upon successfully completing 13 years of formal education.

The Minister for Education in NSW the Honourable Sarah Mitchell in Parliament wished you good luck and I quote Hansard from Parliament on 18 September 2019:

“I wish the year 12 cohort at Plumpton High School the best of luck with their exams”.

The minister went on to say: “This school is a perfect example of the lengths that teachers and a principal will go to for their students. They understand the intricacies and individual needs of students and make the best decisions to get those great educational outcomes”.

You have been the leaders in the continuing cultural shift at Plumpton High School and will continue on to be the leaders of tomorrow.

And this quote represents the way in which we are leading our change.

“Leaders create the conditions where people choose new actions. The choices are voluntary. They’re made by people who see a new landscape, new opportunities and new options. You can’t make people change. But you can create an environment where they choose to”.

It’s shown you a lot – a lot – about people, and given you insight that can only come from experiencing good ones and not so good ones. It’s taught you about the relationships to seek out and the ones to avoid – you’ll come across plenty of both.

Hopefully, above all else, it’s taught you that you can learn anything and accomplish anything when you are determined, committed and courageous.

Right now, and for about the next 6 years, your brain is primed to learn, grow, strengthen and help you become whatever you want to be if you work hard. Don’t worry if you don’t know what that is yet. There’s time for that. In the meantime, be open to new things – new people, new places, new experiences, new adventures, new ideas and see which ones feel right.

Everybody has it in them to be great at something. Don’t let a test, an assessment, a person, a mistake or a bad grade tell you anything dierent.

You have incredible power to open all sorts of doors and shape the life you want. This power is yours and nobody can take it from you. It’s yours regardless of the marks you get. You can’t even know the doors you’ll open, and you’ll nd the way to open them whether you get the grades you want or not. You don’t have to have it all gured out yet.

Know that we’re behind you, cheering you on to the nish line both to the completion of the HSC and beyond. You might be feeling stressed, overwhelmed, confused and tired – we understand that, but keep going. Give it everything you’ve got – you’re nearly there – and know that whatever happens next, you’ve got what it takes for an amazing life. Your nal grades won’t change that.

It is the hope that Plumpton High School has prepared you well for this future and in addition to these essential skills, you have developed discipline, commitment, determination, rigor, risk taking and importantly a love of learning and an ability to ask questions, querying the status quo to constantly seek a better solution.

Be courageous with, and commit to all of your endeavours, as you will experience a rewarding and exciting journey each time, and through life, so as when you stand still to reect on your travelled path you will be able to smile.

Thank you and good luck with your future endeavours wherever they take you.

We wish you well in with your future success and endeavours wherever they take you.

Congratulations to the newly elected and inducted School Captains, Vice-Captains and Prefects for 2020. This induction of the 2 Captains and 2 Vice-Captains and 37 Prefects took place at a Whole Schools assembly during Term 3. This achievement is recognition of the outstanding commitment these students have made to Plumpton High School throughout the time they have been students.

They have chosen to be courageous and apply for a position in the Student Executive Council Senior Leader-ship team, many overcoming signicant fears associated with taking up a senior leadership role. All Captains and Prefects will continue to be supported and developed through mentoring from our business partners and alumni in areas of project management, leadership and public speaking enabling them to carry out their role to an exemplary standard.

I am sure our new leadership team will be able to rise to the challenge before them with courage, clear focus, passion and determination. They are an enthusiastic and vibrant team of students who I see further develop-ing over the next 12 months.

The 2020 team will have important work to maintain the current teams of Inclusion, Unity, Charity, Diversity, Sustainability, and Leadership and continue work to support the ongoing implementation of the Merit System, House Spirit and Primary to Secondary Transitional Leadership teams.

I would like to also congratulate and thank Tina Linaris and Jarrod Temby for the outstanding work they have undertaken leading our Student Executive Council School Captain and Prefect Induction on Monday.

The 41 students that were inducted as Captain, Vice-Captain and Prefect is testament to the commitment of our students and sta, and the continuous shift in culture of Plumpton High School to one of leadership, courage, learning, collaboration, enhanced wellbeing with high expectations and opportunity.

These students have also been supported through the application process by the following Alumni; Edith Yankuba (2018), Jessica Szakacs (2018) Prabhjot Kaur (2017), Afa Kausar (2017), Kiaia Pinomi (2016) who have mentored these students and run public speaking training for them.

In addition, thank you to current Captains and Prefects who assisted students in preparing their speeches.

Principal’s Message

Plumpton High School’s Principal Tim Lloyd was announced as the Australian Principal of The Year 2019 for government schools at the Australian Education Awards recently. Mr. Lloyd and his highly skilled and dedicated team have transformed Plumpton High School over the past ve and a half years leading innovation, creativity and developing high levels of intellectual rigour. Signicant numbers of students attain ATAR results over 90 with one recent student attaining 99.3 and in 2018 Plumpton was a top 10 school in NSW for moving students to higher bands in the HSC.

Students are supported by an innovative Wellbeing structure that is embedded into the curriculum. It develops positive relationships, strong self-esteem and a mindset that promotes courage, complex problem solving, collaboration, leadership, ability to reect and a sense of contribution as a responsible global citizen. This program uses Growth Mindset, Positive Psychology and Choice Theory with teachers trained in these areas enabling them to teach and develop these attributes in students. Incorporated into the Wellbeing is the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme where the scheme is mandatory in year 9.

Part of Plumpton’s success is the Business and Community Partnership Futures program with approximately 40 partners including Citi Group, Amex, Microsoft, ABC, Google, Macquarie University, Western Sydney University and the University Technology Sydney to name a few. It’s an innovative and essential part of the curriculum. Mr Lloyd stated “if we demonstrate what the world beyond school looks like by being immersed in it through partnerships with industry, our students learn and understand what they need to have as essential skills/capabilities to succeed in that world”. Students have Career Pathways Plans that are personalised for all students through 1:1 interviews and planning, including linking students with business partners, access to mentoring /coaching, mock interviews in collaboration with business partners, project management training and Public Speaking Training in collaboration with, alumni and The ABC

To ensure all students are catered for irrespective of their interests and educational pursuits Plumpton also runs 12 gifted and talented programs, some of which commence in Year 5 through local primary schools and enable students to follow a pattern of study from Year 5 to the HSC. Some of these programs include; Forensic Science, Computer Science, Robotics, Dance, Drama, Music, Leadership and Project Management and Media Industry Studies.

Currently Plumpton High School is partnering with Macquarie University to develop micro-credentials in engineering that can be commenced by students in Years 9-10. If students complete the micro-credentials successfully they are guaranteed entry into Engineering at Macquarie University upon completing the HSC.

New House Coat of Arms

Over the last 6 months, following the redesign of the House System in 2018-2019 a group of students in Years 9 and 10 (Maxene, Paula, Shaibah and Caitlyn) and Ms Marashian (Alumni 1996) an art teacher have conducted a consultation process with the Heads of House, House Captains and students to design a new Coat of Arms for each House (Dangar, Halkirk, Karinga and Woodstock).

The Project facilitated by Ms Marashian enabled the students to design, develop and create the coat of arms using industry standard design technology for each House demonstrating their high level graphic design, consultation and project management skills. Congratulations to the team upon this outstanding work.

The new House system links to the overall Wellbeing Framework that includes the Celebrating Success Merit System that was developed over 2017-2018 and launched in 2018, Positive Psychology program and Students Leadership capacity building model

Congratulations Edith Yankuba School Captain 2018 - Media Internship Manchester London -

Edith has recently achieved a signicant oer winning an internship to travel to London Manchester to work within some of their major media industry companies and will also be involved in some charity work from December 2019 to February 2020. This is a great accomplishment given she only recently successfully completed her rst semester studying Journalism and International studies.

This accomplishment is further evidence of the high value business partnerships Plumpton has which enabled Edith to achieve 4 early entry oers to the universities of Macquarie, Sydney, UTS and Western Sydney where she is currently stying. Michele Fonseca a senior executive member from the ABC individually mentored her over 12 months and Edith was part of our internationally recognised Media Industry Studies program working with our partners in this program, The ABC and the University of Technology Sydney.

Principal’s Message

Australian News Media Champion and News Ambassador for 2019-2020 – Congratulations Oliver Reid.

Twilight Teacher Professional Learning Evening Term 3

During Term 3 teaching sta attended our third Twilight Teacher Professional Learning Evening for the year between 3:00-7:30pm.

There were 2 themes covered at the professional learning, the rst delivered by High Resolves and organi-sation Plumpton High School is partnering with in the ongoing development of our successful Wellbeing program. High Resolves design and deliver transformational curriculum based on proven design princi-ples from learning science, behavioural economics, social psychology, and neuroscience. It assists students develop acceptance, generosity, empathy and an understanding of global issues from the human perspective.

The second theme during the evening focused on our HSC writing strategy implementation that com-menced late last term with the introduction of A Learning And Responding Matrix (ALARM) developed by Max Woods at Freshwater High School. ALARM© is a secondary literacy strategy that explicitly teaches students to think and respond critically, evaluate information and make connections between ideas. Students learn to develop a scaolded matrix for organising study notes and writing extended responses. By implementing the matrix in all subjects and using the common terminology, the matrix becomes embedded in the approach students use to examine information. This improves the way in which students then organise that information when answering extended response questions.

Aspiring businesswoman Jessica Szakacs, 18, is still in regular contact with her mentor, JP Morgan investment bank director Elizabeth McAlpine.

Jessica’s dad was out of work for the entire time at high school and she knew no one from the business world, which made her mentorship especially valuable.

Jessica Szakacs, 18, graduated from Plumpton High School last year.

“I was really lost and didn’t know what I wanted to do after school and Elizabeth helped me nd a career path,” Jessica said.

“None of my family went to university.

“Talking to someone from the industry you want to go into is more motivating than hearing advice from teachers.”

Jessica’s mentor is still helping her choose the right uni subjects and introducing her to business recruiters.

Edith Yankuba, 18, arrived from Sierra Leone six years ago with no parents and limited English. Her dad was killed in Sierra Leone’s civil war and her mum died of an illness.

She was school captain last year and earned early university oers from Macquarie University, Sydney Univer-sity, UTS and Western Sydney University.

Edith was mentored by ABC senior executive turned media trainer Michele Fonseca, and she hopes to be a newspaper reporter once she nishes her Bachelor of Communications and International Studies at Western Sydney University.

“My senior years of school were stressful because I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do, but my mentor took me into the ABC to see how the journalists work, which inspired me,” Edith said.

Jack was selected into the NSW 17 boys team with this being Jack’s 4th tournament representing NSW and he was also selected as co-captain of the side. Jack has developed into a very good cricketer and is currently playing at the highest level of Indoor Cricket within NSW. Due to injuries Jack was called into the NSW opens men’s team who travelled to Melbourne a week earlier than his junior 17’s team. Jack played in the week long tournament against the best indoor cricketers from across Australia and performed well, holding his own.

During the tournament Jack hit a ball so hard that a South Australian player broke and dislocated his nger trying to stop it. After spending the night in hospital and having surgery to repair his nger the player returned to the centre and supported NSW in the grand nal.

From this tournament Jack was selected in an Open men’s Australian team to play in a Trans-Tasman competition against New Zealand that Australia won. The accomplish-ment by Jack is exceptional given the quality of the players Jack was playing alongside and against in the opens men’s competition as every 3 years a World Cup Australian side is selected and they have never lost. They have always been and are still current World Champions.

Jack then competed the following week in junior competi-tion in his original 17s NSW team. He and his co-captain lead their team to nish the initial round games in second position and beat Victoria in the qualifying nal to be the rst team into the Grand Final. They did this with only one reserve player. Unfortunately they to lost to a very talented Victorian side but again represented NSW extremely with an overall performance that the Coach (Mr Hancock) and NSW would be proud of.

Congratulations Jack Hancock Selected in the NSW U17 and Open

Men’s Indoor Cricket Team

Congratulations Ebony Hancock Selected in the NSW U17 Girls

Indoor Cricket Team

Ebony playing her rst ever year of indoor cricket trailed for the NSW under 17 girls team. She was selected as one of the top 10 players in NSW to travel down to Melbourne to participate in the Australian Junior National Indoor Cricket tournament. The girls played a great tournament making the grand nal. Ebony’s initial goal was to try and overcome her anxiety and just stepping on to the court was a massive personal achievement. Ebony went on to play that well that she was selected as one of the top 8 players to take the court in the grand nal against Victoria. Unfortunately they went on to lose the game but did NSW proud. Ebony played exceptionally throughout her rst indoor cricket tourna-ment and the entire family are extremely proud of her.

Junior Student Executive Council Mentoring

Plumpton High School Junior Student Executive Council Mentoring led by our School Captain and Prefects. Students are building their leadership and project management capacity through evaluating their ‘Footy Colours Day’ fundraising event where they raised $700. Congratulations to the team for their collaboration and leadership.

Student Executive Council Lead R U OK Day Initiative

The Plumpton High School Student Executive Council ran a highly successful R U OK Day initiative on Thursday 12 September.

It was a time to pause and check in on those around us who might need a chat, some company, or an ear to listen. Students took part in lessons outlining ways they can support each other, and lunch breaks were spent with student- run photo booths, message walls and helpful reminders. Let's continue to support each other, use the many support systems available to us at Plumpton High School, and check in with those in our wonderful community.

In week 1 of Term 3 Plumpton High School welcomed Blacktown City Council Mayor Cr. Stephen Bali and Matthew O’Connor Manager Recreation Planning and Design. Both Cr. Bali and Matthew assessed the high-est rated projects developed by Stage 4 students based on the partnership with Blacktown Council and Plumpton High School.

The project was based around a number of opportunities to develop Alroy Park to:

Improve the park for the local community use taking into consideration, the safety, cultural and environmental sustainability and economic constraints. Improve shared use between Council and School sites. Ensure that the decisions made have been made with community consultation ( for this the students created a survey and sent it out and collected data).

Principal’s Message

Our long awaited taiko drums arrived - having been made to order from Taiwan. Taiko are a broad range of Japanese percussion instruments. In Japanese, the term refers to any kind of drum, but outside Japan, it is used to refer to any of the various Japanese drums called wadaiko and to the form of ensemble taiko drum-ming more specically called kumi-daiko.

Students and Mrs Nicholls are extremely excited to be able to move from the existing drums they have been using onto our new taiko drums. We have two music classes focussing on Taiko drumming at Plumpton including one of our gifted and talented programs.

We look forward to performing at school and further aeld with a goal to perform at the NSW Schools Spectacular.

HSC DANCE

On Monday 19 August the HSC Dance students completed 80% of the HSC Dance course. Shantae Brooks, Sarah Dunlop, Haylee Jeery and Mariah Taghalos completed 3 exams on this day. Core Performance (20%): All 4 students performed a 3:30 minutes solo to Sam Smith’s ‘How Will I Know’ and then completed a 6 minute interview on Safe Dance Practice, Dance Technique and Performance Quality in relation to the dance they performed.

Core Composition (20%): In this component the students choreographed a 3-5 minute dance based around a chosen concept and had to teach this to a younger student. The junior students involved (Tory-Leigh Baldock-Shoobridge, Liliana Abiuso, Amelia Furneyvall and Ebony Furneyvall) performed on the day for them and then the Year 12 students submitted a rationale and completed another 6 minute interview on Generat-ing Movement, Organising Movement and Organising the Dance.

Major Study Performance (40%): All 4 of the students chose to take Performance as their Major. Shantae, Haylee and Mariah performed a piece inspired by the story of Sadakou and the Thousand Paper Cranes, while Sarah performed a piece titled ‘Unbroken’. All 4 girls performed a 4:30 dance and then spoke for 9 minutes on the use of Safe Dance Practice, Dance Technique and Performance Quality in relation to the interpretation of the dance.

Mrs Napoleoni is very proud of all the students involved and the HSC Students are now working hard on their Core Appreciation component (20%). This exam will take place in the HSC Written Exam Period next term.We wish our HSC Dance students Good Luck!

PULSE – Sydney Opera House At the end of last Term the GAT Junior Dance students auditioned to be a part of the PULSE Concert held at the Sydney Opera House. Their piece ‘Running Away to the Circus’ was selected to perform as an individual item. On Thursday 4 July the students travelled to Sydney to take part in this, leaving school at 7am and returning at 11:15pm.

The students completed a dress rehearsal at the Opera House in the morning and then explored The Royal Botanic Gardens. The students visited an art exhibition ‘From the Hive’ by Mariijke Gilchrist who uses encaustic painting. Encaustic painting is the process of fusing layers of beeswax mixed with resin and pigment to create works with a deep nish and luminous, ethereal qualities. After this the students then explored the ‘Plants with Bite’ exhibit that explored the captivating and bizarre world of carnivorous plants. Students learnt about the inhospitable environments that these plants survive in luring, trapping, killing and digesting insects. Curated by horticulturalists at The Royal Botanic Garden Sydney, this is the largest vertical oral wall in the Southern Hemisphere. During the break our very own Hayley Fox conquered 3 fears! Congratulations Hayley!

After exploring The Royal Botanic Gardens the students then had a Finale rehearsal to attend. Our very own Mrs Napoleoni was the choreographer for this and our students were tasked with leading it at the rehearsal with the entire cast of the PULSE Concert. The Finale was a medley of Queen songs and was performed at the end of the show.

The students had a great time performing their individual item ‘Running Away to the Circus’ and a special congratulations goes out to Shamecka Gibb who stepped up at the last minute to learn a featured part as the lead character fell ill and couldn’t attend the performance.

It was a long day of rehearsals, but the performance was spectacular and all of the students came away with smiles on their faces! Congratualtions to all involved and a special thank you Mrs Napoleoni, Ms Mangion and Ms Renee Dunn who came from Hebersham Public School to help with the group.

U16s FUTSAL

Leading up to the event, the students put in multiple hours during lunch times, working on formations, set routines and strengthening any identied weaknesses in their game. They also had multiple warm up games against the year 12's where they more often than not, came out on top with 2 wins and 1 draw.

On the day of the tournament, the boys went through the group stage unbeaten, dominating all matches with their high energy footballing nature, which allowed them to continue into the quarter nals. They got matched up with Central Coast who were also unbeaten in all their matches, so the boys knew they were up against their toughest opposition of the day. They fought hard and did themselves proud during the match, but unfortunately missed out on progressing into the semi-nals after losing narrowly, 1-0.

Last month the Under 16's boys represented Plumpton HS in the State Futsal Championships Tournament.

bstreetsmart - Road Safety Excursion

Every year Year 10 students at Plumpton High School have the opportunity to attend and participate in the bstreetsmart excursion. bstreetsmart is the inspiring initiative of the Trauma Service at Westmead Hospital. Westmead’s Trauma Service is constantly reminded through their hands on work that young people aged between 15–30 are disproportionately represented in road trauma. As a result they have a strong commitment to Road Safety Education. The purpose of bstreetsmart is to reduce the fatality and injury rates of young people by promoting safe behaviour as drivers, riders and passengers.

bstreetsmart provides students with rst hand experiences and: An understanding of their responsibilities as a driver and as a responsible passenger Information and strategies to avoid serious injuries and death Information on how to reduce risk taking behaviour through greater awareness of the consequences of distracted driving, inattention, speeding, drink and drug driving and driver fatigue.

Our students were witness to a live re-enactment of a car crash scene which contained many confrontingelements. Students heard from a range of keynote speakers whose lives have been signicantly impacted due to road accidents. Two of the most dramatic being a mother who lost her daughter who was texting and driving and a young man whose life was changed forever after riding a trail bike illegally through Mt Druitt without a helmet. He now has a severe brain injury, short term memory loss and physical disabilities.

It is hoped that through attendance at this excursion and concepts explored in PDHPE lessons, our students think of the consequences of their actions and take steps to minimise risk in all situations.

HOme made Cosmetic Products

Students in year 7 have been busy creating a cosmetic product of their choice as part of their project based learning in Science. Students researched and identied an ethical cosmetic which is sourced naturally from the environment which has little impact on human health and the environment. The materials used to create the product had to be cheap, easily accessible and safe to use by student.

Students have produced many dierent variety of cosmetic product including deodorant, perfume, fragrant tanning oils, and soap and moisturising lotions. Students have also tested the property of the cosmetic product successfully to ensure the products were safe to use.

Horticulture and Chemical Applications @ TAFEAs part of my ongoing training I attended a week at Dubbo TAFE to undergo training in Horticulture and Chemical Applications. This course would allow for us to deliver Horticulture as a VET subject for years 11 & 12, giving students a Certicate II at the end of the course.

It was interesting to see the dierent areas used for plant propagation. A workshop is used to make cuttings and plant seeds, using a variety of dierent substrates and media. From there, the plants are moved to a “hot house” where temperature and humidity are controlled to provide optimal conditions for germination and growth. Once the plants have reached a suitable age, they are moved to a “shade house” in order to harden the plants and make them tolerant of dierent weather conditions before nally being planted into the ground.

I plan to apply these techniques in my own teaching practice in order to better teach students the variety of ways in which they can propagate plants to produce crops.

ENGLISH

This term has been busy, thought- provoking and reective for the English faculty and our students. Term two ended with the Year 8 Project Based Learning event, Survive and Thrive. What does it mean to ‘Survive and Thrive’? Well with community outreach in mind, year 8 had considered this driving question by investigating mental health resources available to the PHS student community. Students applied their knowledge of purpose, audience, form and context to their research of informative texts throughout PE and Science. This research was gathered in their groups, where they each created a presentation and ier that was presented to year 7 in a whirlwind ‘Survive and Thrive’ marketplace. Groups presented topics and resources including: Salvation Army, Beyond Blue and PCYC, just to name a few.

With year 11 yearly exams and HSC preparation well on the way, week 6 involved hosting Clever Cookie Academy, a tutoring academy run by Minister’s Award for Excellence in Teaching recipient, Peita Mages. Mages took Year 12 and Year 11 students on a journey to nd their strengths in English and to maximise their marks in their HSC exams.

The series of workshops started on the 29th of August, when Year 12 worked their minds and pens all day in the GWS, learning the craft of creative writing, HSC Paper 1 Tips and how to prepare an essay for an unseen question. Students wrote for three hours and learnt new ways to get the most out of the questions. The second session walked students through Section 1 of Paper 1 of their English exam and they learnt a tried and tested formula to tackle unseen texts - Ideas, Analyse & Execute. After lunch, students engaged in insightful discussions on how to best tackle unseen questions in all modules and how to take their knowledge of their texts and apply it in exam conditions. Students came out with each of their own ‘HSC Game Plans’.

On Friday the 30th of August it was year 11’s turn, spending three periods in two workshops that also saw them prepare for their upcoming Year 11 exams. These workshops gave them a head start to their HSC course which they begin next term. Students were exposed to new and interesting ways to write short stories and to gather inspiration from their surroundings to implement into their engaging pieces. Rikkii-Leigh Grundig found the workshops to be incredibly helpful with her recent exams, “It helped me with my preparation process, in breaking down texts, which really helped me with my exams. Last year I didn’t answer half the questions in english, this year I answered all of them!” Students left feeling invigorated and focused to start their HSC with a new perspective.

MathematicsYear 7 Davinci and Year 8 Davinci RMF. Majority of Year 7 Davinci and 8 Davinci are enjoying their RMF activities and are alwayslooking forward to these lessons. There are few students who found it challenging and were not putting in their best eort at the beginning but are now coming out of their comfort zone. The activities have really dierentiated the class further and has brought kids needing more support to my attention. It has also highlighted the gaps the students have in their learning. The activities are usually aligned with the scope and sequence and gives them the opportunity to enhance their understanding through collaboration with other students working at their level. Students are motivated by the fact that when they complete the activities at their level, they are allowed to work on the activities of the level above them. There are eager to nd if they have grown in level. Great improvement has been seen in how these students attempt questions in assessment tasks. ~Shammi Prasad

Year 7 - 9 have responded phenomenally to the RMF program. Students appear condent when completing activities set at their level, with students attitudes towards learning shifting from being externally to internally motivated. Year 7 in particular, responded well to having a diverse range of activities which kept students interested and looking forward to RMF each week. ~Natasha Chandra

7 Opal have had an encouraging response to RMF activities completed so far this year and this term. All students have at least been having a go at their ability level, many have completed their assigned task and some have tried a higher level on occasion. I have witnessed students discussing methods with each other on how to solve their problems and using diagrams or other visual methods to help them. 8 Rome and 8 Troy have also been receptive to the booklets this term. All but a few students are happy to have a go at the activities during every RMF lesson. How students have chosen to complete their activities varies. Some just do the week they are up to, some try to totally complete previous weeks before moving on and others who have missed classes pick the activities they prefer that they may have missed. Students of the same level are enjoying working together and a few have even tried a harder level booklet. ~Ellen Schulze

7 Wallabies are enjoying Reasoning Tasks that are designed to t student’s ability. Students are feeling condent in completing tasks that involves multiplicative thinking and dierent strategies to solve same problem. Working in groups give them autonomy to up skill their mathematical ability, reasoning and collaborating with other students completing activities with similar capabilities. Students look forward to RMF activities, which assists in building their critical thinking. ~Sonia Satija

"Reframing Mathematics Futures is a program that I have upheld in all my stage 4 classes. The opportunity for all the students to work collaborative is very valuable and informative for each student and the teacher. The students get a dierent perspective and can understand what the questions are trying to ask, support their answer with more reason and evidence then what they would normally write individually. The activities are targeted at all the students abilities with the opportunity of building their skills into higher order thinking in higher levels. I have seen development in many of my students are looking forward to seeing their nal results for 2019 next term." ~Sarah Prinsloo

Students in 8 Geneva have been tackling some famous problems including the four 4s challenge: where they must write the numbers 1-20 using the four operations and exactly four 4s. Students have noticed that often getting one number allows you to nd another by simply swapping a + with a - sign.7 Koo have investigated the “circles and regions” problem and have enjoyed seeing examples in Mathematics where a pattern doesn’t always appear as it rst seems. ~Veneta Bailey

The maths show

During term 3, the Mathematics faculty enlisted the Maths Show production to present their show to eager year 7 and 8 students in the GWS. On Friday 9th August the production performer came to the school and presented the continual fun aspect of mathematics. The Maths Show consists of several short sketches that combine maths history, magic, puzzles and more. The show is highly interactive, with plenty of student participation. For example some sketches contain ‘maths magic’, where students will be amazed by the power of numbers, others involve puzzles such as the famous ‘Bridges of Koenigsberg’ puzzle, others sketches introduce maths history, including ancient Babylon and Greece, Famous Women of Maths, Pioneers of Chance and Data and more.

The picture above shows one of the sketches that was performed on the day. The students chose three numbers, when you put the numbers in ascending order and then reverse the order underneath it you get the two dierent numbers. Hence once the numbers are subtracted, then ipped and added together. You will always get 1089. Blowing all the students minds both in year 7 and year 8. The event engaged all students providing studentengagement also. There was two sketches were students needed to participate in front of their peers showing their mathematics skills and understanding of the knowledge she was asking. Students needed to answer questions with and without a calculator that provided an insight into other areas of mathematics that we sometimes run out of time to show in the classroom. Looking forward to future presentations by the Maths Shows in future years.

world of maths at plumpton high school

World of Maths, the unique traveling maths show visited Plumpton High School and provided the Year 7 and Year 8 students the opportunity to feed their inquisitive brains with fun, colourful, hands-on, mathematical, and problem solving activities. The activities kept all students engaged as they catered for students with dierent ability and learning needs. Each activity came as a colourful display with instructions, questions and a student worksheet. The instructions and questions on the displays made each session a guided discovery lesson, where the students solved a variety of problems, discovered number patterns, identied geometric properties, did logically thinking and applied Mathematics to the physical world. The students enjoyed the 75 minutes of exposure to real-life Maths and took on the challenge each activity provided. They demonstrated good teamwork and worked collaboratively to attempt and solve as many solving the problems in the given time.

Kind and Respectful to ALL Others

Can I answer YES to these questions?:

Am I in the right place?

Am I doing the right thing?

Am I being fair?

Am I being helpful?

Am I being kind?

Achieving highbehaviour standardstogether

All actions have consequences

We all have a shared responsibility to help the learning and wellbeing of the large majority of students. To do this we need to re-establish our standards in a number of focus areas.

It must be clearly understood that there will be concequences for people who fail to meet the behaviour standards outlined in the document.

We cannot accept behaviours which impact negatively on our school learning environment. We each have a responsibility to be the best learners, citizens, and leaders we can be. We must respect the wellbeing of others and the learning of others

At Plumpton High School, we understand that all actions have consequences. As a school, we work together in peaceful, helpful and kind ways so that the consequences of our actions are positive ones. There are many rewards for working together in such a way, including:

Feeling good about ourselves and othersEnjoying our lives at schoolBeing able to participate in great learning and many school activitiesBeing acknowledged for our work with merit certificates and other awardsBeing involved in leadership activitiesBeing successful in our learning

Sadly, it happens that people sometimes lose their way and forget their responsibilities to themselves and to others in our school community. We have to make sure we have good systems in place to prevent such things from negatively aecting our lives at school and our learning. Some of the consequences for people behaving badly include:

Warnings and action by your teacher if you fail to meet the behaviour standards.Referral to the head teacher for action if the problem persists.

attendance

Dear Parents / Carers,

If you would like to develop an email link with our Head Teacher Administration, Ms Catterall regarding your child’s ATTENDANCE at Plumpton High School, please just send her an email at:

[email protected]

The email should state the following: your name (rst & last name), your child’s name (rst and last name) and what year they are in. She will then add you to her Parent/ Carer contact list. This will enable her to send you a graphic displaying your child’s attendance record for the term. The graphic will be sent as an email attachment (Word le). This will be a quick form of communication if she has any attendance concerns regarding your child.

In 2013, the school has introduced a new attendance tracking system, that has removed the need for paper rolls and runners to collect the rolls. Teachers are now marking rolls electronically in class, giving the school instant data on student attendance in class (as shown below). The new system has been an instant success giving all sta access to an excellent attendance prole of all students, so that any concerning patterns of attendance can be addressed promptly. Remember that there is a very close relationship between high attendance and student success. To encourage students to set high standards for attendance, 3 awards will again be presented at Presentation Day & Graduation in 2019: Gold, Silver & Bronze Attendance Awards.

Attendance Updates Via E-mail & SMS

Since 2016 you would have been receiving SMS notications if your child is either absent from school or late to school. Please reply to these SMS notications promptly so that your child’s attendance record can be updated. If the school does not have your most recent mobile number, could you please contact the school on 9625 7020 and request a ‘Change/Update of Details Form’
