the same objective in providing quality services to students.

Po Leung Kuk affiliated schools of different levels are all operated on a non-profit making basis.

The mission and policy of affiliated schools emphasize social benefits and keep pace with the

current needs of the society.

“Compassion, Respect, Diligence and Integrity” is the motto of Po Leung Kuk affiliated schools.

“Cognitive, Aesthetic, Social, Physical, Moral development” are all emphasized in the cultivation

of students, and students are expected to contribute to society with what they have learnt.

The School Management Committee of Po Leung Kuk affiliated schools is a committee with no

political or religious agenda. People should be free to express their feelings and beliefs, so,

provided that the law has been complied with and the school order is not threatened, all schools of

thought and all religions can co-exist in schools.

Po Leung Kuk is a Non-Governmental Organization established by the Chinese. The Kuk is

concerned about the community and the Mainland and is dedicated to the development of Chinese

culture. The affiliated schools encourage students to participate in social services to develop their

sense of responsibility towards our country and its various nationalities, which in turn cultivates in

them an open and optimistic attitude as well as a global perspective.

Major Concerns - Achievements and Reflection Priority Task 1: To maximize students’ learning experiences and effectiveness

Achievements

1.1 To cater for students’ diverse needs, briefing sessions were held for S3 students and their parents at the Junior Secondary College to introduce the elective subjects offered, their respective requirements and possible combinations. The pros and cons of taking two or three elective subjects were also discussed. S4 students with an aptitude for Applied Learning courses were introduced to the programme and their interest was assessed before application.

It is a regular practice that form level meetings or discussions are held in the core subject panels to revise the scheme of work, adjust the teaching content and tailor-make teaching materials to better take care of students of diverse learning styles and abilities. Students’ progress is closely monitored to identify the needs for enhancement or remedial work.

1.2 A number of elite students were recommended for academic programmes run by tertiary

institutions at different times of the year and the courses they took were substantially subsidized by the School. The subsidy motivated more students to enquire about the scheme and volunteer to apply. Many of them established a link with the institutions by the end of the school year after taking part in a couple of academic programmes.

In collaboration with the Chinese University, the educational psychologist attached to the college continued to organize an elite programme for Po Leung Kuk schools for the second year. Twenty S5 students form our school benefited from this event to explore their academic and careers interest. Besides taking part in academic talks and workshops organized by external organizations recommended by teachers, students also initiated to take part in some academic competitions conducted by tertiary institutions.

Diversified teaching strategies with differentiated tasks were adopted after

evaluating the strengths and weaknesses of students in quizzes, uniform tests and examinations. Enhancement tutorial groups were coordinated to reinforce learning and remedial tutorial groups were run to ensure students falling behind could catch up. Revision classes were organised during school holidays to provide additional help to students who needed them.

Teachers shared their experience in ways to motivate students through peer lesson observation among themselves and with teachers from the Junior Secondary College. The English Department continued to run a bridging programme for S4 students in August with a focus on the teaching and learning of English in cross-curricular contexts.

1.3 Students’ interest in various subjects was raised by taking part in more

academic activities like talks, excursions, visits, field trips, art performances and competitions. The activities spread throughout the school year and enriched students’ experience outside class. Winning competitions was also a great morale boost.

1.4 Students’ academic improvement and achievements were appreciated in the form of

commendation letters, small gifts and academic prizes. Their achievements were also shared with fellow students during school assemblies.

Reflection

After the transition from AL to NSS, the seven classes of S4 were split into two groups. The more able students were allocated to 3X classes, taking three elective subjects while the less able ones were allocated to 2X classes, taking two electives. This narrowed the gap in the ability of both groups. This also allowed the able students to study more subjects and the less able ones to have more lessons in each subject. This arrangement proved effective and would continue in the coming two years.

Priority Task 2: To develop a positive learning attitude and outlook on life

Achievements

2.1 The Counselling Team designed a life education programme to train students from less able S4 classes for better communication and interpersonal skills. The feedback from students was encouraging. They benefited from the weekly programme and improved their self-understanding, peer relationships and family harmony. Teachers were positive about the programme and found that it reinforced what students learned in the Personal Growth module of Liberal Studies.

2.2 With the various opportunities to become leaders in the SU, Houses, Clubs and school teams,

student leaders acquired suitable leadership skills through interacting and collaborating with their peers. They also cultivated a sense of responsibility by serving the school and their fellow students. Student leaders were trained in leadership training activities such as leadership camps and training days.

2.3 A systematic plan was in force to expose students to different potential pathways so that they

could explore their academic and career interests throughout the three years of senior education. Such activities were conducted in different forms, including mentor group counseling, talks, sharing sessions, workshops and visits. S6 students were given projected

grades of each subject they took to help them assess their strengths in different subjects and make better JUPAS or other career-related choices. Students and parents were well informed of the exit pathways available and knew what was best for the students.

2.4 The effectiveness of current school rules and their implementation was regularly evaluated.

On the whole, the revised system worked and it was able to promote proper student behaviour. Students’ discipline problems decreased and a sense of self-discipline was cultivated. Meanwhile, class spirit was nurtured through the setting up of the class club, class activities, mentor day activities, inter-class competitions and counseling activities. A higher class spirit was achieved to facilitate learning and teaching.

Reflection

Student leaders were trained and they served as young mentors after training. Students began to show signs of a positive learning attitude and self-discipline. They realized, step by step, their potential and aptitude and became more realistic in making their JUPAS choices or other decisions on their exit pathways. Most of the S6 school leavers continued to study in different tertiary or post-secondary institutions, both locally and overseas.

Our Learning and Teaching

The college has a long tradition of maintaining a good learning atmosphere on the school premises. This ethos continues to have a positive influence on the new senior secondary students. Many of them are willing to learn and improve. Efforts are made to promote peer learning and to encourage students to be inquisitive. They are gradually trained to become independent learners and make steady progress in their studies. S4 students had a chance to use English to learn and to have fun during the week-long summer bridging programme. Their English reading skills were further reinforced with the introduction of the Scholastic Reading Programme. These measures helped them to adapt to the English learning environment. With the funding from REES, a native English tutor was employed to mobilize students to take part in English activities. Numerous English fun clubs were run to cater for students of different interests and levels of English proficiency. The Campus TV Team came alive under the leadership of the tutor and a group of enthusiastic student helpers. Seven issues of school newspapers have been published in print and an online version is also available with footage of student activities. For students planning to take the IELTS for further studies overseas, short courses were run by the native English teacher to coach them in writing, speaking and reading. The issue of diverse abilities in S4 has been lessened by the arrangement of putting the seven classes into three higher-ability classes taking three elective subjects and four lower-ability classes taking two. This new measure has substantially reduced the ability gap in each core subject class as well as in most elective subject classes. To better take care of less motivated students, teachers adopt diversified teaching strategies and prepare various types of assignments. The implementation of SBA in some subjects and the adoption of formative assessment have improved students’ performance in a gradual manner. Students’ progress is attributed to the professional, dedicated and effective teaching force, appropriate policies to raise students’ English language proficiency and split class tutorial lessons to help develop students’ higher order thinking skills.

Support for Student Development

Under the through-train system with Po Leung Kuk Tong Nai Kan Junior Secondary College, talks were arranged for S4 students when they were studying S3 to better prepare them for the academic requirements, choice of elective subjects and school activities at the Sixth Form College. During the summer, S4 students attended an orientation day to learn about various aspects of school life from teachers and young mentors. The mentor system inherited from the sixth form education strengthens relationships between mentors and students. The small mentor group size (one mentor to around fifteen students) allows high quality pastoral care and guidance. Besides becoming independent learners, students at the Sixth Form College are expected to exercise self-discipline and show mutual respect. Developmental programmes are conducted by the Counselling Committee while preventive measures are introduced by the Discipline Committee. Good conduct is appreciated whereas misbehaviour is policed. The 3S Programme, which aims to empower students to serve the community, runs for two years for every cohort of S4 students. Careers guidance is well developed in our college. We assist students in choosing JUPAS and post-secondary courses. All information about possible avenues open to NSS students is collected and disseminated. Structured lessons on life planning, aptitude exploration and careers knowledge have been designed. Students who have an aptitude in special subjects are introduced to the Applied Learning Courses. In response to the inclusion policy, the college has a Student Support Team to cater for students with special educational needs. Teachers have been arranged to attend related training courses and the college has met the requirements set by the Education Bureau in terms of teacher training. We provide necessary help to cater for individual students’ special needs, such as academic tutoring, social skills training and accommodation for examinations. A major student problem at the Sixth Form College is examination stress. While students endeavour to make progress or to excel, they need help in overcome the occasional stress they may encounter. Mentors, counseling teachers, the school social worker and the educational psychologist affiliated to the college all work closely to monitor students’ physical and psychological well-being by providing individual counseling aimed at releasing their anxiety.

Student Performance

Students’ performance in the Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education Examination was generally satisfactory. The pass percentages of most subjects were comparable to the territory average.

The rate of students obtaining JUPAS offers and the rate of students eligible for a JUPAS offer (obtaining level 3 in Chinese Language and English Language, level 2 in Mathematics, Liberal Studies and one elective subject) were both higher than the territory average.

We are immensely proud of our track record of helping our students obtain university places, which reflects the great deal of effort put in by the students and teachers.

Feedback on Future Planning

Although the solid academic foundation of the college gives us many reasons to be optimistic about the future, it seems that the college is relatively more effective in nurturing more able students and less so in attending to less able ones. Adjustment to teaching strategy and resource deployment is needed to put more focus to help less able students to improve. With the unfailing support of the Kuk, and the joint effort of the Junior Secondary College, the college will ensure the satisfaction of all its stakeholders through continued excellence in academic performance and student guidance on further studies and career planning.
