How to Get the Most Out of Your Convention Experience

Welcome! We are HONORED that you have made the trip to join us. We want you to have a great convention, so here are some tips to make this a wonderful experience:

• Take lots of notes. You can’t remember it all. Refer to your notes when you get home.

• Create an “ACTIONS ITEMS LIST” in your notes. Every time you get an idea you want to apply, place it in action items. You’ll then have an actions list when you get home.

• Take lots of photos. You’ll remember more of the experience!

• Attend as many sessions as possible. There are plenty to choose from. Make good use.

• Attend our Newcomers Orientation. Learn the lay of the land and how to find your way around.

• Introduce yourself to others. Join our Friend Finder Program at the Newcomers Orientation and make new friends! Have lunch with your new friends, trade contact info, and stay in touch.

• Hang out in our Artists’ Lounge in the El Conquistador at night. Lots of people will be there. It’s a great way to learn.

• Ask instructors and field painters for pointers when you’re out painting. Use your Faculty STOP Here sign.

• Watch demos by field painters so you get lots of ideas in the field.

• Paint with others. It’s more fun and you’ll learn more.

• Snatch up demos and paintings in our art show. Great opportunity to collect great paintings at reasonable prices.

• Introduce yourself to PleinAir team members. We want to know everyone here!

• Visit the Marketing Team Table to introduce yourself to the Integrated Marketing Manager for your area.

• Most important: KEEP IT FUN!

The PleinAir team and I want to thank you for making the trip to join us at this, the first Plein Air Convention in Tucson. Whether you flew thousands of miles to be here or just drove from across town, we’re very appreciative that you would choose to spend your time with us.

This year’s convention is the biggest ever — we’re making history together again with the largest number of plein air painters painting together in one place at

one time! Although it‘s going to be bigger than ever before, we want it to feel like a gathering of good friends and family. So we’ve included our Friend Finder option — sign up when you register, and we will introduce you to three people at our Newcomers Orientation meeting. If you have any questions, our Help Desk will be able to assist you, whether you need help finding somewhere to eat, need a ride to a paint-out, or just need a Band-Aid.

This year we have added several new evening sessions to help you master specific painting chal-lenges, an indoor nocturne demo and outdoor nocturne demo/paint-out, and a couple of critique sessions.

For those of you who attended last year, you will find many things unchanged: We will paint every day in some of the most stunning locations in and around Tucson; you have your choice of four stages, with top-notch demos and talks to help you take your painting to the next level; our army of blue-shirted staff and volunteers to help you with any questions; the Showcase Gallery, which will be open to the public; our extensive Expo Hall (please support our sponsors); and, once again, we’ll be marking the end of the indoor sessions with a party on Monday night.

During our paint-outs, you will be able to find our faculty — just look for the bright flags! We’ve asked all of them to be generous with their time to help all of you grow as painters. If you need any faculty advice or assistance while out painting, please display the “Faculty STOP Here” card you will find in your bag. We’ve asked all faculty members to stop and help if they see that sign. I think you’ll find them all to be interested and helpful.

Please come over and say hello, so we can get acquainted and perhaps get a chance to paint together.

Friday, April 15ERIC RHOADSMAIN STAGE – FRIDAY, 4:00PMOPENING CEREMONYAnnouncement of the PleinAir Salon Grand Prize Winner, Lifetime Achievement Award for Dean Mitchell, Lifetime Achievement Award for Ken Auster.

GEORGE GALLOMAIN STAGE – FRIDAY, 5:45PMGO BIG OR GO HOMEPainting in the style of the Pennsylvania Impressionists who executed canvases as large as 50 x 56 inches outdoors in only a few hours, Gallo will demonstrate how to paint a very large canvas in one sitting. He will concentrate on how to put together a strong design, getting the painting off to a good start, and show you how to give the illusion of light and shadow without second-guessing your initial brushstrokes.

Saturday, April 16ERIC RHOADS MAIN STAGE – SATURDAY, 6:30AMART MARKETING BOOT CAMP

ERIC RHOADS MAIN STAGE – SATURDAY, 8:00AMHOME ROOMCome to Home Room at the start of each day – it’s the time where we give away door prizes and make important announcements.

MATT SMITH MAIN STAGE – SATURDAY, 8:15AMPAINTING NATURAL LIGHTPainting believable, natural light isn’t as simple as it seems. Smith will share a variety of important tips, including the three light sources found outdoors, warm vs. cool light, color variation, value control, texture, and why it’s important to look to the shadows as a means of determining how strong a light source is. He will also share ways to build a painting from the shadows up and point out a variety of common mistakes to avoid.

CINDY BARONWATER MEDIA STAGE – SATURDAY, 8:15AMINNOVATIVE METHODS TO BRING RICHNESS AND LIFE TO YOUR LANDSCAPES Join Cindy Baron as she explores innovative watercolor techniques, creating layers, holding transparency, and creating an opaque richness as you would see in an oil painting. Learn

a different approach to mixing, throwing color on paper so as to have it mix naturally, as nature intended. Using a limited palette and a technique of lifting color, shapes and value harmony will develop into a painting.

ALBERT HANDELLPASTEL STAGE – SATURDAY, 8:15AMCAPTURING THE BEAUTY OF ROCKS IN MIXED MEDIA PASTELJoin Pastel Society of America Hall of Fame honoree Albert Handell as he demonstrates a mixed media pastel approach to obtaining the weight, beauty, and unique structure of rock outcroppings, something he is famous for. He’ll begin with an interesting watercolor underpainting and finish with pastels, explaining as he demonstrates the contrast between the transparent watercolor washes and the opaque application of pastel, which adds beautiful textural contrast to the entire pastel.

LEON HOLMESDEMO STAGE – SATURDAY, 8:15AMEXPLORING YOUR CREATIVE SIDE WHILE OBEYING THE RULESNo two paintings subjects are ever the same. So why should we paint them with the same techniques and formulas? Understanding the basics of color, tone, and drawing gives us a solid foundation. Join Holmes as he explores the subject he paints — explaining his color choices, experimenting with different tools, and exploring creative composition.

BRYAN MARK TAYLORMAIN STAGE – SATURDAY, 10:00AMTHE MASTER’S MIND Bryan Mark Taylor will present the latest scientific research on how to accelerate the learning process, break through bad habits, and focus attention, and will show you how the skills of a master painter are within your grasp.

DAVE A. SANTILLANESMAIN STAGE – SATURDAY, 11:00AMCAPTURING THE ATMOSPHEREWhether in the studio or painting outdoors, capturing depth in a landscape painting relies on knowledge of three key color components. Watch as Santillanes reveals these components in a demonstration of his practical approach to painting atmosphere. And learn how this approach can immediately add depth to your own work.

JAMES WILLISMAIN STAGE – SATURDAY, 11:00AMENGLISH OAKS, EARLY SPRINGJoin UK painter James Willis as he tackles a group of ancient

medieval oaks in the early-morning spring light. Inspired by the complex pattern of branches and shadows, Willis’ painting will represent these ancient trees against a cool early sky, showing the dramatic shapes of the textured and colored trunks.

TIM OLIVERWATER MEDIA STAGE – SATURDAY, 11:00AM WATERCOLOR EN PLEIN AIR: CAPTURING THE EMOTION OF A PLACEGreat paintings touch myriad emotions within us. These emotions are as varied as the experiences of the artist and the viewer. As a landscape painter, when you hear comments like, “That reminds me of...”, or “I remember when...,” you have begun to touch these emotions. Join Oliver as he demonstrates a few things he has learned about evoking emotion and capturing a “sense of place” in his sketching and watercolor painting.

ALINE ORDMANPASTEL STAGE – SATURDAY,11AMLEARNING TO SEE — CREATING DYNAMIC PASTELS WITH BOLD STROKES AND VIBRANT COLORSIt’s important to learn to break things down into colors, shapes, and values and to shed preconceived notions of what things look like. In order to progress toward an illustrative result, Ordman approaches painting abstractly — she believes that painting is much more like sculpture than like drawing. Learn how she masses in color fields to create shapes and then carves them to show details, creating a dynamic end result.

JOE GYURCSAKDEMO STAGE – SATURDAY, 11:00AM THE POWER AND IMPORTANCE OF THREEThere are universal patterns that can be found in successful representational paintings. Come watch and learn about these intriguing findings as artist Joe Gyurcsak shares successful approaches to the development of a painting — simple guidelines that will improve your creative process the next time you paint.

ROSEMARY’S BRUSHESDEMO STAGE – SATURDAY, 12:45PMBRUSHMAKINGJoin master brush maker Rosemary Thompson as she shows you how her legendary brushes are made, discusses how to clean them, and gives general hints and tips on how to get the most from your brushes.

ERIK KOEPPELMAIN STAGE – SATURDAY, 2:15PMTRADITIONAL GLAZING AND LAYERED PAINTINGKoeppel, an expert in the techniques of the Hudson River School, will demonstrate a historic method for working layer after layer on the same painting. You will see how transparent and translucent washes of oil color can be combined with in-painting to create amazing and natural textures and details, and enhance the effects of light and atmosphere.

VLADISLAV YELISEYEVWATER MEDIA STAGE – SATURDAY, 2:15PMPAINTING LOOSE WITH THE FOCUS IN MINDWorking with his unique color-mixing approach, Yeliseyev will explain loose, painterly watercolor techniques alongside his disciplined approach to step-by-step processes. Starting from the sketch and through to the finishing touches, the values and how to work with them will be revealed. Learn how to add imaginary details to your painting, sprucing up your painting with color accents so as to escape a dry, academic feel.

ALAN FLATTMANNPASTEL STAGE – SATURDAY, 2:15PMBACK TO THE BASICS WITH PASTEL PAINTINGFollow Alan step by step as he paints a pastel landscape or cityscape with the fundamental techniques he has developed over many years of painting with pastels. Working from a photo, he will demonstrate the texturing technique he uses on granular boards to produce broken-color impressionistic effects and the three-step process — drawing, color lay-in, and refinement — he uses to develop a pastel painting.

JANE HUNT DEMO STAGE – SATURDAY, 2:15PMSTRENGTHEN YOUR LANDSCAPE PAINTINGS, OUTDOORS AND IN THE STUDIOWhile painting an oil landscape from start to finish, Hunt shares many of the tips she wishes she’d known years ago and demonstrates how having a strong visual design in place will free you up, give you confidence to paint more loosely, and take your paintings to the next level.

SUSIEHYER, EVENING NOCTURNEWATER MEDIA STAGE – SATURDAY, 7:00PMPAINTING THE NOCTURNELearn a variety of simple ideas, tools, tips, and techniques for completing nighttime paintings, start to finish. By designing with the large shapes, using values in the lower register, and with color informed by the source of the light, nocturne paintings can be done on location outdoors or in the studio, even from your

daytime photos! Broaden your repertoire and open up a whole new world of painting possibilities.

HOWARD FRIEDLANDPASTEL STAGE – SATURDAY, 7:00PMPAINTING THE PERSONALITY OF TREESHave you ever seen two people that look identical? No, right? Even twins have slight differences in personality and style. Well, the same is true for trees. Even if two trees are a lot alike, artists have the option to portray them in a unique way for the sake of variety and interest. In this demo Friedland will discuss the nature of how different trees grow and how to interpret them.

SUSAN BLACKWOODPASTEL STAGE – SATURDAY, 8:00PMSKY AND CLOUDS CAN MAKE OR BREAK YOUR PAINTINGOkay, so you are out on location (or in your studio), painting to your heart’s content. Here it comes, time to put in the sky ... But wait! Before you put in one more sky, come find out why! Too often artists put the sky that they see into their paintings. By thinking and painting with a purpose, your skies can be under control and add power to your paintings. Rethink the reason for a sky and know why.

Sunday, April 17ERIC RHOADS MAIN STAGE – SATURDAY, 6:30AMART MARKETING BOOT CAMP

ERIC RHOADS MAIN STAGE – SATURDAY, 8:00AMHOME ROOMCome to Home Room at the start of each day – it’s the time where we give away door prizes and make important announcements.

JOVE WANG MAIN STAGE – SUNDAY, 8:15AMHOW TO INFUSE MODERN ARTISTIC IDEAS INTO YOUR REPRESENTATIONAL ART: DESIGN AND RHYTHMJoin Chinese master painter Jove Wang as he explores two of his core artistic principles: modern design and achieving rhythm. Observe how his ideas are executed, from initial block-in to a finished work, and learn how instinct and feelings can be conveyed through painting, alongside the techniques, knowledge, and experience that can help you work more effectively and be in control.

ANDY EVANSENWATER MEDIA STAGE – SUNDAY, 8:15AMSIMPLIFY YOUR WATERCOLORS BY SEEING THE BIG SHAPESThere seems to be a never-ending quest to loosen up in watercolor; it’s easy to fall into the trap of putting too much into your paintings, and editing out the non-essential is an important skill to master. Painting loosely doesn’t just happen, it comes from gaining a comfort level with your skills and materials over time. During his demo Evansen will complete a value study and use it as a guide for the color painting. He will discuss ways to simplify a scene into larger shapes that will help you paint more boldly.

NANCIE KING MERTZPASTEL STAGE – SUNDAY, 8:15AMPASTELS ARE PERFECT FOR PLEIN AIR!Learn from a master pastelist how to quickly develop plein air works. She’ll explore how the immediacy of the medium allows the painter to create finished paintings in the field or works to rely on in the studio. Photo reference will be used for this demo, but Mertz will explain how plein air knowledge and painterly techniques will keep your studio work looking fresh, as though painted outdoors.

JAMES MCGREWDEMO STAGE – SUNDAY, 8:15AMPAINTING THE GRANDEUR OF WESTERN NATIONAL PARKSThe works of plein air artists and photographers helped spread awareness and lend inspiration for Congress and presidents to establish some of the first and most grand national parks. Best known for painting Western parks, James McGrew will demonstrate in oils his process for interpreting the spectacular beauty of these national treasures. He will replicate the process of using a plein air study to create a studio work as he interweaves natural history as it applies to painting.

KATHRYN STATS, RACHEL WARNER, AND LINDA TIPPETTSMAIN STAGE – SUNDAY, 10:00AMEXPANDING YOUR VISION THROUGH HISTORY“A Timeless Legacy — Women Artists of Glacier National Park” Join Stats, Warner and Tippetts as they discuss the early female artists who camped, hiked, and rode horseback to paint in Glacier National Park in the 1920s. The panel will cover the impact of exhibiting with and studying these bold, spirited women who overcame the challenges of society, weather, and geography to paint in Glacier. Panel moderated by Jean Stern.

AMERY BOHLING MAIN STAGE – SUNDAY, 11:00AMREVEALING THE MYSTERY OF A GOOD PAINTINGJoin Amery Bohling as she walks you through the steps she takes when starting a new piece of work. It’s sometimes tempting to take shortcuts to get to the fun stuff, but then you may miss some basic prep work and struggle so much more. She’ll start with a sketch, a clean palette, and a careful drawing, and then she’ll premix her colors, carefully balancing shadows and light.

KRISTI GRUSSENDORF WATER MEDIA STAGE – SUNDAY, 11:00AMEXPRESS MORE WITH YOUR WATERCOLORS BY PAINTING LESSOften, what you choose not to paint is the most important decision with a transparent watercolor painting. Watch as Kristi attempts to get out of the way to let the paint, water, and paper do what they do best.

BRUCE A. GOMEZ PASTEL STAGE – SUNDAY, 11AMDYNAMIC PAINTING WITH ATMOSPHEREWant to avoid flat and dull paintings? Looking for a way to inject life, artistry, and atmosphere? Gomez will show you the typical mistakes to avoid; how to project distance, subtlety, and nuance into your works using angles and analogous colors; and how to use dark areas to push focus where you want the focus to truly be. Atmosphere, it’s what we breathe and live to paint!

R. GREGORY SUMMERSDEMO STAGE – SUNDAY, 11:00AMFINDING “MORE” WITH “LESS” Summers’ approach to plein air is simple and basic: Use four colors, make the most of them, and enjoy it at the same time. Learn to paint quickly and effectively with limited colors to better capture that fleeting light, and learn how to continue once it’s gone.

CAMILLE PRZEWODEKDEMO STAGE – SUNDAY, 12:45PMSIZE MATTERSIn developing a larger painting from a plein air color study, Przewodek’s approach is similar to the one she uses in the field. Learn how a rapid lay-in of big color masses at the very beginning is crucial — “If you don’t get a good start, you’re finished” — along with a few non-plein air principles to be aware of when scaling up the size of a composition. Przewodek will talk about the importance of departing from or redesigning the original composition, and demonstrate how she takes skills learned from years of painting on location and applies them to studio work.

GEORGE STRICKLANDMAIN STAGE – SUNDAY, 2:15PMDOING IT YOUR WAYJoin Strickland to find out everything you ever wanted to know about plein air painting, including ways of making it easier and more enjoyable. He will cover how to get a good start to better lead you to a successful painting and how to develop a process that fits your own persona and style. Strickland will also demonstrate “his way,” which includes lots of tips and general how-to info.

BRIENNE M. BROWNWATER MEDIA STAGE – SUNDAY, 2:15PMBRING THE EVERYDAY TO LIFE IN WATERCOLORA strong and dynamic watercolor painting is not about what you choose to paint, but how it is painted. Come learn Brown’s tips for creating a strong painting from a seemingly ordinary scene. She will demonstrate how pushing value contrast, creating interesting patterns, and using confident brushstrokes can strengthen your work.

WILLIAM A. SCHNEIDERPASTEL STAGE– SUNDAY, 2:15PMMORE THAN A PORTRAITA key to becoming a better painter — of any subject! There’s a reason that the top art schools emphasize the portrait and figure. Watch as Schneider demonstrates techniques to improve your drawing, value, edge control, and particularly your ability to see and paint the subtle temperature shifts that will elevate your painting to another level.

PAUL KRATTERDEMO STAGE – SUNDAY, 2:15PMTHE POWER OF THE SKETCHA much-overlooked aspect of plein air painting is the thumbnail sketch — the first few minutes before you start painting can be the most important. Kratter will walk you through the steps of simplifying your sketch into five or six simple shapes, using three distinct values. You will learn how to put these aspects of the thumbnail into a dynamic and well structured painting.

RICHARD SNEARY AND TIM OLIVER WATER MEDIA STAGE – SUNDAY, 7:00PMURBAN SKETCHING: SHOWING THE WORLD ONE DRAWING AT A TIME “Urban sketching” is a term coined by Gabi Campanario, founder of the hugely popular nonprofit organization Urban Sketchers. USk began in 2007 as a small but dedicated group of sketchers in Seattle, Washington, and has grown to an organization of hundreds of people in 60 regional chapters

KATHY ANDERSONPASTEL STAGE – SUNDAY, 7:00PMUNDERSTANDING THE TRANSPARENCY OF FLOWERSWidely recognized for the beauty of her flowers, Kathy Anderson gives you an inside look into creating transparency in flowers, starting with a wash that harmonizes your painting and designing a strong block-in.

LORI PUTNAM PASTEL STAGE – SUNDAY, 8:00PMWAVES, RIPPLES, SPARKLES, AND REFLECTIONS: PAINT WATER WITH FUN AND SIMPLICITYThe earth is roughly 70 percent covered in water, yet how much do you comprehend about how to paint it? Does the water appear light or dark? How do I make it seem to be moving? How do I paint it calm and still? Why do my waves look flat and my sparkles look corny? Lori Putnam will simplify what you need to know. Once you absorb just a few principles, you will understand what clues to look for and begin seeing water’s shapes more easily. That means you will also have a lot more fun painting it!

Monday, April 18ERIC RHOADS MAIN STAGE – SATURDAY, 6:30AMART MARKETING BOOT CAMP

ERIC RHOADS MAIN STAGE – SATURDAY, 8:00AMHOME ROOMCome to Home Room at the start of each day – it’s the time where we give away door prizes and make important announcements.

KATHRYN STATSMAIN STAGE – MONDAY, 8:15AM IT’S JUST PAINTA common response to a potential subject is, “I love that scene,” or, “I really want to paint that.” But then it’s necessary to consider why it’s appealing and how to deliver a product that gives the same joy as the emotion upon seeing the subject in the first place. Stats will break down this “nuts and bolts” process by explaining value, color temperature, and major shapes to create perspective, both aerial and linear, to lead the eye into a landscape, finding visual pleasure along the way.

RICHARD SNEARYWATER MEDIA STAGE – MONDAY, 8:15AMPAINTING BUILDINGS IN THE LANDSCAPESome say that watercolor is the most difficult medium in painting. And Sneary gave it up more than once, convinced they were right! He was drawn back by the incredible transparency of watercolors, unmatched in any other medium. Join Sneary as he demonstrates how to develop strong compositions, values, perspective, color, and luminosity in your paintings.

TOM CHRISTOPHERPASTEL STAGE – MONDAY, 8:15AM APPLYING TEXTURES TO THE PASTEL LANDSCAPE — A NEW APPROACHFollow Tom Christopher as he introduces his signature technique for applying texture to pastel painting. Christopher considers underpainting for pastels a valuable step in creating a painting rich in color and depth. By adding various degrees of texture to the underpainting, he produces a finished work unlike other pastel paintings. He will then demonstrate his pastel application (mark-making) to the textured support.

DARIO FALZONDEMO STAGE – MONDAY, 8:15AM PAINTING A WESTERN SYDNEY RIVER SCENE Working in oils, Dario Falzon will demonstrate his alla prima approach to painting a natural river scene, typical to the area of western Sydney where he lives and grew up. Falzon will work through his process, step by step, from block-in to finished piece, and explain his palette and color mixing.

CURT WALTERSMAIN STAGE – MONDAY, 10:00AMDIRECTION DISCOVERED: A LIFETIME OF PLEIN AIR PAINTINGJoin Curt Walters as he uses a combination of video and slides to illustrate his techniques for painting large canvases en plein air at the Grand Canyon. He’ll explain in depth how plein air paintings have both directed and redirected his life’s events and works.

BILL ANTONMAIN STAGE – MONDAY, 11:00AMPLEIN AIR PAINTING IS A DISCIPLINE, NOT A STYLEOutdoor painting is not necessarily an end in itself, except for the very few who have worked years in the field and learned what it has to teach. But for most of us, this invaluable ‘’direct from nature’’ approach is and should be a means to an end: better paintings. Join Bill Anton as he explores painting outdoors, with its difficulties and frustrations, and learn how there is no better way to make yourself into a better painter!

Hear how this process has improved his studio paintings and overall skills as a professional.

JILL STEFANI WAGNERPASTEL STAGE – MONDAY, 11:00AMCREATING STUDIO WORKS THAT LOOK LIKE THEY WERE PAINTED IN THE FIELDWe can’t always paint outdoors, but still want to capture that fresh “plein air feel” even when we’re working indoors. In this demo Wagner will discuss several different ways to start a studio pastel painting using photographic references. Learn to block in your composition, eliminating detail and useless information. Become aware of some of the pitfalls associated with creating values, highlights, shadows, and atmosphere. And find ways to push your paintings beyond the original photo that inspired you!

QIANG HUANGDEMO STAGE – MONDAY, 11:00AMCAPTURING THE TEXTURE OF OLD ARCHITECTUREHuang will share his approach to painting old architecture, concentrating on the development of the texture of old structures by using a palette knife. He will also show how to process reference photos to establish the mood of a painting, and how to control the amount of information showing at different stages of the painting development. He will keep the painting mainly monochromatic to show the aged appearance of the old structure and use subtle variations in the color temperature to maintain the painting harmony.

LINDA TIPPETTS Tippetts began painting on location in the mid-’60s — before she had ever heard the words “plein air.” During her five-year completion of the Famous Artists Schools, Inc. correspondence course, she took her paints

outdoors. The textbooks just didn’t offer enough, but the stunning outdoor landscape of the Rocky Mountain Front in Montana fulfilled that natural urge to interpret with paint “in the moment” and on location. Her 30-year sojourn as a professional artist has earned Tippetts national recognition that includes her paintings in major exhibitions, museums, and collections. lindatippetts.com

JILL STEFANI WAGNER Whatever she paints, Wagner’s primary focus is always “the light” and how it affects the scene she is trying to capture. Working in pastel, oil, and watercolor, she approaches her paintings as a sculptor would, carving out nuances of light

Jill is a devoted plein air artist, painting yearly in Italy and in festivals around the U.S. She’s been named a Master Pastelist by the Pastel Society of America, and her work is seen frequently in Pastel Journal. Wagner owned an award-winning design firm before “seeing the light” and becoming a full-time artist. jillwagnerart.com
