Tips for Submitting H.E.R.Stories Articles

1. Write for your audience. a. What does the reader already know about this subject?b. What does the reader need to know about this subject?c. What do you want to tell the reader?d. What do you want to accomplish with this

message/article?e. What do you want the reader to do after reading your

article?f. Is it your intent to motivate, persuade, or inform?g. Why should this article be published? h. What was accomplished (impact) that makes it

noteworthy?2. Make certain to submit an actual article.

a. Press releases and announcements are not considered articles.

b. Tell the story in an action oriented fashion, giving the reader a visual of what actually happened.

c. Use a clear, logical progression.d. Use active verbs whenever possible.

3. Spell out all acronyms first and then use the initials, i.e., PGCAC should be Prince George’s County Alumnae Chapter (PGCAC).

4. Remember your article must be under 500 words and you may include no more than 3 photos per article.

5. Use spell check before submitting articles.6. Develop complete sentences and check for appropriate subject

and verb agreement before submitting an article. Check grammar before submitting your piece.

7. Proof read all articles at least twice before submission to make certain that you’ve included all of the details.

8. Writing is talking on paper, so make your communications talk. Read aloud what you’ve written before submitting it. Sound conversational.
