POFF PTO is so excited about the upcoming year! We would not be able to do what we do without all of our dedicated volunteers! Thank you!!
We are looking for a few more to join our team. Your time, talent and energy can help make a difference for our kids!
P.S. We are also looking for Coordinators for Box Tops (there is an easy new app!) and the Giant Eagle Apples For The Students
program which benefits Poff’s Studio.
RETURNING STUDENTS and/or FAMILY MEMBERS Poff family members are invited to join the #bethekindkid movement by purchasing T-shirts. Wearing the shirts as a family is a fun way to promote kindness in the Hampton community.

In this after school program, students in grades 2-5 will learn about mindfulness. Elementary School Counselors, Mrs. Kinney and Mrs. Maley, will help students to build mindfulness skills. Mindfulness is the awareness of one’s present state, emotions, and surroundings. This program will help students learn to focus on the present, strengthen their self-control, be aware of their surroundings, be aware of their emotional state, and accept themselves for who they are. Each week students will participate in various fun mindful activities such as: create a Mindfulness Bottle, practice relaxation poses, play fun mindfulness games, and learn about positive self-statements that they can use in their everyday lives.
This after school club will be held from 3:30-4:30 at Central Elementary on the following MONDAYS: 9/16, 9/23, 9/30, 10/7, 10/21, 10/28.
Registration is $50 per student and includes all materials and instruction. If paying by check, please make it payable to “Melissa Maley.”
To register, please send the completed form (below) with payment to your child’s school office in an envelope that says “School Counselor- After School Club.” All registrations should be sent to school by Friday, 9/13. ATTENTION CREATIVE THINKERS!
Central, Poff, and Wyland Elementary want you to join:
Why Odyssey of the Mind is Good for Kids . . .
The Odyssey of the Mind teaches students to learn creative problem solving methods while having fun
in the process. By tapping into creativity, and through encouraging imaginative paths to problem
solving, students learn skills that will provide them with the ability to solve problems -- great and small
-- for a lifetime. The Odyssey of the Mind teaches students how to think divergently by providing
open-ended problems that appeal to a wide range of interests. Students learn how to identify challenges
and to think creatively to solve those problems. They are free to express their ideas and suggestions
without fear of criticism. The creative problem solving process rewards thinking "outside of the box."
In the Odyssey of the Mind . . .
• Students develop team-building skills by working in groups of as many as seven students per team.
• Students learn to examine problems and to identify the real challenge without limiting the possible solutions and their potential success.
• The creative thinking process is nurtured and developed as a problem-solving tool. • Students of all types will find something that will appeal to them.
Who Can Participate . . .
All students in Kindergarten through 5th Grade are invited to join Odyssey of the Mind! Teams will be formed for K-2 and 3-5. Complete the sign up sheet on the reverse side to join.
To Learn More . . .
• Read the letter on the reverse side for more information from Dr. Bennett, Hampton Township Odyssey of the Mind Coordinator
• Visit the Odyssey of the Mind website at www.odysseyofthemind.com • See your enrichment coordinator
Dear Elementary Families, Hampton Township Odyssey of the Mind would like to invite interested students to register for an Odyssey of the Mind (http://www.odysseyofthemind.com/) team problem solving activity again this year. Odyssey of the Mind teams work together to creatively solve spontaneous verbal and hands-on challenges as well as one long-term problem per season. Participants learn team building skills and develop their own talents and creative thinking skills to present a unique solution to a posed problem. Teams will be organized by grade (K-2 and 3-5) and meetings will be scheduled based on the coaches' availability. Teams will have between 3-7 members and may have a registration fee of no more than $60 per team member depending on individual elementary PTO and corporate sponsorships. The time commitment is September through February, with one to two-hour meetings at least two times a month (times to be set by the coaches), Regional Tournament date is March 7, 2020 at Keystone Oaks MS/HS and students may have possible trips to the State Tournament and National Tournament in April and May respectively. The tournament schedule will be posted on www.wpaodyssey.org. You are encouraged to look at the Odyssey of the Mind website, www.odysseyofthemind.com and look over this year’s problem synopses with your child to decide if this is something they might want to participate in. K-2 students have the option of participating in the Primary Division problem, which is a non-competitive division that does their performance at the regional tournament without advancing to the state or world tournaments. We can have as many teams as we have parent volunteer coaches. Parents who volunteer to coach will be guaranteed their child's spot on a team. After that, if we do not have enough coaches per student ratio, a lottery will be held to determine the remaining team members. Because Odyssey of the Mind usually has a coaches' training scheduled for the first Saturday in November, we need to form teams and begin meeting as soon as possible. I will hold a brief coaches’ training for new and returning district coaches before team meetings begin in the last couple of weeks of September. Please return the form below to school by Friday, September 20, in order to sign up to participate this year. Please do not send registration money with the form at this time. If you have any questions about the program, please contact me at [email protected] or 412-487-2313 (landline, please do not text.) We will have a kickoff event on Wednesday, September 18 at 6:00 PM at Hampton Middle School auditorium where you can come and learn more about the program and try solving some spontaneous problems together as a family! Thank you, Mary Lynne Bennett HTSD OotM Coordinator -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
