From the Sport CoordinatorsDear members of the Sacred Heart College Community

The Winter season for the majority of our sports at SHC have come to an end. Our athletes, across various sports, have been doing an outstanding job representing Sacred Heart College with numerous teams achieving fabulous results inclusive of a number of Premierships.

The First XI Soccer have had a tremendous season taking out the Twilight Soccer League final for the first time in history defeating Blackfriars, while our Open B1 and Open C1 Netball teams took home the premiership.

SHC recently competed against Rostrevor College for the 95th Intercol Exchange. There were many tough fought out games over the two days and we thank all the coaches who assisted in making the day a success.

The College also recently hosted the 62nd SHC-ACK exchange in August with a brilliant weekend of Sport and the Arts shared between the two College’s. The huge community spirit displayed by all families in hosting the ACK students was greatly appreciated.

In the State-Wide Knock-out competitions, the Year 10 boys basketball and soccer teams have progressed through to the next round. The Year 10 girls basketball commence their Knock-out journey with an upcoming Round 1 clash in Week 10. Both the boys and girls Year 10 basketball sides have seen the selection of four Year 9 students in each team. Our Open A Netball side finished 4th in the State Knock-out Finals as one of the successful 6 schools across the state, while our Open Girls Football were knocked out in the semi finals by Tatachillla who went on to win the State title for 2018.

At Marymount Campus both the Year 6/7 and Year 8/9 Knock-out Football teams were narrowly defeated in the final rounds, as well as the Year 6/7 Netball team losing to Scotch College in a competitive semi-final. The Year 8/9 boys Football were the success story of the College taking out the State Title for 2018 over Henley High School. The Year 6/7 boys Football have progressed through to the preliminary final in Week 10 against Eastern Fleurieu and we look forward to reporting on the success in the next CEA.

Aside from the State Knock-out and weekly competitions, Sacred Heart College recently entered three teams in the All Schools Mixed Touch Carnival. As a mixed event, our male and female athletes from the Senior and Marymount Campus combined their skills to come away with some impressive results with our Open and U15 sides both taking home 3rd place. Next week over 100 Year 6/7’s will head to the parklands for the Catholic Primary Schools Touch Carnival.

The Primary aged students have been kept busy with the SACPSSA Cross Country Carnival, SAPSASA Athletics Carnival and the second Independent School Swimming meet at Immanuel. The senior boys will represent SHC in the upcoming Achilles Cup in Week 10.

We would like to extend our gratitude and thanks to all of the staff, parents, coaches and volunteers who assist Sacred Heart College to have such an extensive Winter sports program. Well done to all involved.

All Schools Mixed Touch ChampionshipsOn a wet and windy day, three teams, two Open and one U15s, competed in the All Schools Mixed Touch Championships in the City Parklands. It was a great day despite the conditions with our Open Team 1 and U15s both finishing 3rd overall.

Open Team 2 had a very tough pool coming up against the eventual winners in their first game which knocked their confidence. In true Hearts spirit, they didn’t give up and rallied to the end. We were up against some impressive school teams who play Touch on a regular basis. It was a credit to our students to show excellent teamwork despite only a few training sessions.

The combined Marymount girls and Year 10 students really improved their team work over the course of the day and by the finals were really combining well. Outstanding contributions from Mackenzie van der Jeugd (Year 8), Mia Rieniets (Year 9), Darcy Gluyas, Jordan Sanderson (Year 10), Will Day, Kai Laidlow, Sean Ross, Kyle Scott and Courtney Wallace (Year 11). Thank you Emily Williams and Mel Carey for coaching and supporting the teams.

2018 Intercol SHC v RostrevorThe annual Intercol is a sporting exchange between Rostrevor College and Sacred Heart College that commenced 95 years ago in 1923 - the same year Rostrevor was established. The rivalry forged then between our two schools continues today. This year the Exchange was held at Rostrevor from 3-4 August. There were many impressive performances, including demonstrations of athletic prowess and of commendable sportsmanship. The results and awards listed below provide a snapshot of the sporting battles that took place. We sincerely thank all coaches, staff, parents and Old Scholars who were involved in the Intercol.

2018 SHC-ACK College ExchangeThe 62nd annual College Exchange for 2018 was held on the Friday 17 - Sunday 19 August. As host College, the SHC families warmly welcomed the ACK students into their home.

Friday night saw the festivities commence in the Br McAteer centre where the SHC Netball team contested for the first win of the exchange. The Saturday night saw the two Colleges share in Mass which was followed by a brilliant display of talent from the Music and Dance students of both College’s. To conclude the evening, the annual Debate took place where Assumption proved too strong for SHC.

Sunday was a full program of six separate sport matches combined with the running of the 100m Gift for our athletes. At the half-time of the Football, we again saw our fine athletes take to the track in an entertaining 3x200m relay. The brilliant Drum display at the start of the Football demonstrated again the fine depth of talent in the Sacred Heart College students. See below for a full list of results from the exchange.

A huge thank you to Luke Hildyard and Coralie Bandiera for the brilliant organisation that went into such a successful exchange.

Year 6/7 Knock-out NetballOn Monday 27 August, the team played in their semi final match against Scotch College. The girls were defeated 35-23 in a high intensity match held at Marymount Campus. Each quarter was closely contested with several turnovers from our defensive end and accurate goal shooting in our attacking end. Our mid-court players provided consistent options and pressure throughout the court when needed. The team consisted of: Ruby Roberts (Captain), Bella Viljoen (Vice Captain), Emmerson Aristidou, Milly Bradley, Isabella Cannell, Rylee Carne, Georgia Mackereth, Tysa Miles, Manni Tierney and Natarsha Vlachos. Thank you to Kaye Whittaker for umpiring our match and to Jane Roberts for scoring. I thank the team for their commitment to lunchtime training’s twice a week and for their consistent teamwork in our matches.

SoccerYear 6/7 Saturday SoccerMarymount Campus participated in the Southern Districts Junior Soccer Association for Terms 2/3 this year. The girls had a very successful season, consisting of a number of students who attempted the sport for the first time. The team played against all-girls and mixed teams throughout the season, showing great determination and a never give up attitude in all games played. They played well consistently, coming away with several wins during the season, none greater than an 8-1 win against rivals St Peter’s Woodlands. All attended trainings with a positive attitude, looking for feedback throughout drills to develop techniques and skills. The leadership and teamwork shown throughout the season was admirable, with the girls encouraging and praising each other’s efforts. The team also participated in the annual Primary Night Soccer Carnival, facing strong competition and winning several hotly contested games. The girls are commended for their hard work and dedication this season.

Ben CarusoCoach

Year 8/9 Saturday SoccerThis team began the season with great enthusiasm which was present in every game. Although we were short on numbers for some weeks, they worked hard throughout our Friday night training sessions and were keen and ready to go on Saturday mornings. Every player has improved enormously - each of them striving to do their best. The girls finished the season tied for 3rd and 4th and I was very proud of their achievements, which made it a pleasure to be their coach. Individual efforts to be acknowledged goes to Charlotte Clarke who scored 16 goals for the season.

MIDDLE SCHOOL

BasketballIn 2018, Basketball at Sacred Heart Middle continued to attract many players with over 50 boys playing across six teams this season. Old Scholar, Harry Sires, once again shared his experience and knowledge of the game by coaching the A and B grade teams. The C grade was coached by Rhett Mieszkuc with the D grade teams coached by Ashleigh Bryans, Milad El-Tawil and Matt Druce.

Team A dominated from the start, their defensive pressure was able to put them into a comfortable position early on each game. Their depth showed throughout the year as the whole team was able to play strong minutes and all players worked well together. They finished the season with 6 wins and 2 losses.

Team B started off the season strong. There were a few uncertainties as the boys got to know each other and learn playing styles and after a couple of weeks, players broke out of their shells and clicked better than ever. Their play style was team based and efficient. They finished the season with 5 wins and 2 losses.

Team C had a very successful year with 6 wins and 2 losses. The most pleasing aspect of coaching these boys was their willingness to put team success ahead of individual statistics. The highlight was the great win at Rostrevor during Inter-Col.

While Team D1 struggled this season against strong competition, the boys always presented with a positive attitude and learned some new skills along the way. Team D2 enjoyed a very successful season winning all but two games, one which was a loss and the other a draw, both to other Sacred Heart teams. Team D3 enjoyed 2 wins and 2 draws during the season and they always displayed great team work.

FootballYear 6More than 60 students pulled on their first ever SHC football guernsey, with the three teams coached by Alex Baxter, Kevin Whelan and Rob Beattie. Each coach brought a deep passion and a wide range of expertise and our football coordinator, Pat Kitschke, challenged the boys with skill-based drills. The coaches experimented with competitive drills, which encouraged the boys to use their voice, shepherd and block for their teammates. On game day, the early start meant the boys were often met with a dewy deck and as a result, a slippery football. Despite this, they worked tirelessly to translate the skills they refined at training onto the field. Their enthusiastic approach to the game and terrific sportsmanship (irrespective of the scoreline) was always shown and appreciated. Thank you to our coaching staff and all the parents who have put the time and effort into making this season a hugely successful one. We all look forward to seeing the boys continue to develop in future years, both as football players and young men. Year 6 Football Coordinator: Cameron Hext

Year 8The 8A team’s consistent effort and team ethic could not be questioned. They enjoyed their best performance in the hail on our oval, when they finally ran over the top of Trinity College (who had handed them two previous defeats). Some of our most consistent performers were Tyson Coe, Charlie Hildyard, Ben Excell and Archie Lovelock. The two 8B teams faced the challenge of scratching for numbers once injury and unavailability hit the group. Occasionally, some Year 7s played to ensure we were able to field a team. Jack Bartlett, Riley Brigmanis and Cody Grant all began in the B teams and through their efforts, managed to finish the season playing consistently in the A grade. Other players to show a pleasing commitment each week were Jackson Green, Brock Humphries, Kai Kenyon, Jesse Schefe and Jake Underwood. Mackenzie Stock and Luke Young both showed remarkable improvement this season. Thank you to our coaches and all the parents for your support and we wish the boys well in their future!Year 8 Football Coordinator: Marcus Trimboli

Year 92018 saw 52 players represent SHCMS. 9B team was coached by Tom McInerney (SHOCS) and won 7 of 8 games, with their only loss coming against Adelaide HS. They enjoyed tight battles against Pulteney and PAC with a courageous 3 point victory against PAC in R6, which was possibly the highlight match of the season. 9A team secured victory in 6 of 9 games and played some impressive football. After a resounding 17 goal victory in the first game against Rostrevor, the rest of the season threw up some absorbing and tightly contested matches. A 1 point loss in the Intercol clash was the most challenging result of the season. The team played an inspired brand of contested football, but were unable to capitalise on the scoreboard. Kobe Ryan was awarded the Intercol medal as Hearts’ best player and it was thoroughly deserved. It was a welcome return to the winners circle for 8/9 Knock-out football. The Grand Final was played in challenging conditions at Hickinbotham Oval, against Henley HS for the 12th consecutive year. A hard-fought 6.16 (52) to 6.6 (42) victory was achieved with Luke (Donny) Dewhirst awarded the Malcolm Greenslade best afield medal for his tireless performance in the ruck.

SoccerThe 8/9B3 team showed loads of enthusiasm at training and the boys revelled in being part of a team. It was therefore no surprise that the side finished on top of the table, winning the Middle B3 competition. The Intercol medalist for the team was Frank Herbut who played very well, despite Rostrevor winning the derby. Much gratitude is extended to David Herbut for managing the boys with great guidance and leadership.

The 8/9B1 squad had many fine moments throughout the year. They demonstrated their ability to play some fine football and were able to defeat some very skilful opponents. The Intercol match was one for the ages. The game went down to the wire with Hearts coming out 3-2 victors. The Sacred Heart boys all played extremely well, especially Dylan Gilford who won the Intercol medal. Thank you to the coach, Gavin Walsh, who displayed great patience and knowledge for the players.

The 8/9A side was expertly coached by old scholar, Liam Brown. The team played some excellent football, thus finishing second in the Middle A League. The Intercol Medal was awarded to Oscar Gohl, the captain, for his courage and all round excellent defending from the back line. In the 8/9 Boys Metro Knock-out series, the team played some awesome football. Hearts defeated Brighton Secondary in a tight first round contest, before being eliminated from the tournament in the second round to Cabra College.

Due to the enthusiasm and commitment of parent volunteers and the students themselves, our Year 8/9 soccer players demonstrated well rounded skills.

SquashOn Thursday 23 August, both SHC Team 1 and SHC Team 3 played off for the Squash SA High School Competition Grand Final. It was a fantastic lead up to the grand final with both teams winning their semi-finals in extremely competitive matches, which once again lead to a nail-biter grand final match. A big congratulations must go SHC 3 who defeated SHC 1 with a final score of seven games to five. Both Teams should be congratulated on their effort and sportsmanship on the evening and throughout the whole season. Also, a big thank you is extended to our other three SHC teams and to all the parents who participated and supported throughout the season.

SACPSSA Touch CarnivalThe Year 6/7 boys were given an opportunity to take their game into the wider community when they participated in the South Australian Catholic Primary School’s Sports Association (SACPSSA) Touch Carnival. Each team participated in several games throughout the day and were able to transfer the knowledge of the game and the skills they had acquired to be successful on the field. The boys impressed us with their team spirit and willingness to support and include everyone. Also participating in the carnival in a leadership role were several of our Year 8/9 students. These boys gave up their time to come and represent Sacred Heart as umpires.

Girls Winter SportThe girls Winter Sport season has come to an end for 2018 and Sacred Heart College have again made their mark on the Catholic Girls Competition.

This year SHC entered 14 Netball teams in the Saturday morning competition, played across various locations around Adelaide. All of our teams were competitive and this year we had 7 teams compete in Grand Finals. Congratulations to SHC 3 B1 and SHC 9 C1 teams on their Grand Final wins. Well done to all the Netball teams on a great season. The Open A Netball side were successful in progressing to the Statewide Knock-out Finals for 2018 and competed against the top six SA schools on Tuesday 28 August. The girls finished an impressive 4th in the State while nursing a number of injuries. The team was well lead throughout season 2018 by captain Courtney Summers. We farewell Courtney and each of our Year 12’s from the Hearts Netball.

The girls Soccer were competitive in the Open B competition finishing in 4th place. New coach and old scholar Eliza De Silva, combined with captain Tara Nutall to lead the team well throughout the season.

The girls Volleyball are still competing in the VSA Friday night competition and we look forward to reporting on their success as well as that of our Year 10 Knock-out Basketball who compete in Week 10 this term.

Open Girls Knock-out FootballThe girls Football Teams season, was short lived with only three games, but enjoyable and fun nonetheless. With a great group of girls representing SHC in a very positive manner, they played each game with amazing spirit and school pride.

After progressing through to Round 2, the girls defeated Cabra and Glenunga in two tough matches on the SHC Main Oval, which then set up an encounter against Tatachilla Lutheran, who were touted as very strong opponent. After dominating much of the first quarter against Tatachilla, SHC couldn’t capitalize. With the aid of the breeze, our opponents proceeded to kick four goals to take the game right away from us. Much of the game from half-time onwards was a stalemate and in the end, this quarter proved to be the difference.

The girls couldn’t make their 6th State Knock-out Grand Final in a row and they now have a goal for next year - to play on Adelaide Oval! Their effort and application are to be commended and I look forward to seeing high numbers out in 2019. The team this year was well led by Chloe Morgan and consistent performers in the side were: Emma Smith, Tessa Kohn, Heidi Barrett, Renee Roberts, Eirenn Harkness, Mikaela Hayes and Sarah Walkington. Many thanks to all the girls for their involvement - well done!

Boys First XI SoccerThis review was going to begin by stating that the 2018 season started back in Term 1 Week 6, but the truth is it started about three years ago. The players then and the players now should all feel part of the great success we had this year, only dropping three games all season, going on a seven game winning streak and finishing the season with the College’s first ever double - winning both South Australia’s top division league and finals series titles!

Only 11 players can start each game, but led by our leadership group of Nick Harpas (Voted League MVP), Noah Smith and Jayden LoBasso, a total of 23 student athletes, including for the first time two Year 9’s (Oscar Gohl and Fergus Lynch) took the field representing Sacred Heart’s First XI.

There are so many highlights this season from losing one of our leaders in Joe Gauci to a professional contract with Central Coast Mariners, to the massive growth and fight from each and every Year 10 player. Two of our Year 12’s paved the way up front with Nick Harpas scoring 10 goals and Joel Smith slotting 7. Let’s not forget our impenetrable back-line who conceded the League’s lowest tally of 13 goals all season, led by our Intercol best on ground, Christian Tinnion. Lastly the individual performances of Chris Ashwood drove us to victory on many occasions, winning not only best on ground in the Kilmore win, but also in our TSL Cup final success.

We thank the players, coaches, supporting families who braved the elements to support our boys. We are State Champions! Go Hearts!

Boys FootballThe football season has come to an end with many close results. The first XVIII were unlucky going down to Rostrevor in the Intercol by 1pt but finished the season off strong with a resounding win against Assumption College. Our boys played with heart and passion on all occasions and represented the school with distinction. Our thanks go to all coaches who ensured Sacred Heart remains a strong presence in the school football association.
