If a Teacher’s Motto is that “We open minds”, then a parent’s motto would surely have to be “We open both minds and hearts.” Nelson Mandela has been quoted as saying “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” Interestingly, Mahatma Gandhi had a very similar message - There is no school equal to a decent home and no teacher equal to a virtuous parent.” There is a huge amount of research data that states that when parents are involved in their children’s education at home, their children perform better at school. This performance is further enhanced, if there is a good relationship between teacher and parent based on mutual respect and trust. The principal criterion for parents to have a positive effect on their child’s attitude towards learning, is not the level of the parent’s income nor the level of education, nor employment status nor language ability, it is the parent’s attitude towards learning. Probably, there is every variety of difficulty experienced by a parent when it comes to being involved in a child’s education. However, a parent can show how much they value education by taking an active interest in what’s happening with their child. A parent’s positive attitude towards learning could be expressed by providing a quiet area for homework, by limiting T.V., computer games and mobiles on school nights and by talking about what’s happening at school. Being aware of the school’s expectation with regard to homework is important as is discussing with your child’s teacher, your child’s attitude and performance in the classroom. But what about your child’s heart! To be proactive with your child is far more productive for both parties than to be constantly reactive to what your child might get up to. A group called the “Children’s Society” claims that too many parents have lost the art of play and do not allow their children’s imaginations to be fully expressed. Children’s play is often too “stage-managed” and “rule-bound” for children to really enjoy; parents are encouraged to loosen the reins and allow children to have more time to run free. When surveyed, children complained that their parents are too tired or too busy, are no fun because they are too bossy or have forgotten how to play. An article that appeared in the London Times a few years ago contained this paragraph: “Play is most important because it’s how children enjoy their lives. They learn about rules, sharing, taking turns, community and all those social behaviours that make us rounded people. It’s about relationships. Play with a parent is just as much about relationships and trust. If a family doesn’t play well together, communication and security suffer. No one ever grows old regretting the time they spent playing with their children.” Of course, play is not only about getting off the couch and onto the floor for, as children grow and mature, play becomes more sophisticated; but whatever its shape or form, parents should be important participants. Sport Last Friday Matthew Langdon, Elissa Quagliata, Rohan Crema, Nicholas Andrews and Aiden Porter all competed at the Peninsula Cross Country trials. All these students tried very hard and are to be congratulated on their efforts. This Sunday Aiden Porter, Nicholas Andrews, Brady Jones, Layne Bennett, Monique Sichter and Jasmine Sichter will represent District at the Peninsula Football (Soccer) trials to be held at Trinity Beach. We wish them all the best. Year 5 Camp On Thursday and Friday this week the Year 5 students will be participating in a camp at the Daradgee Environmental Education Centre. The camp will be a great experience for these students and will hopefully assist in helping them develop leadership skills as our next group of school leaders will come from this group of students. I would like to wish the Year 5 students a safe, enjoyable and positive camping experience. Have a good week Greg Hoare Principal 2014

If a Teacher’s Motto is that “We open minds”, then a parent’s motto would surely have to be “We open both minds and hearts.” Nelson Mandela has been quoted as saying “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” Interestingly, Mahatma Gandhi had a very similar message - “There is no school equal to a decent home and no teacher equal to a virtuous parent.” There is a huge amount of research data that states that when parents are involved in their children’s education at home, their children perform better at school. Probably, there is every variety of difficulty experienced by a parent when it comes to being involved in a child’s education. However, a parent can show how much they value education by taking an active interest in what’s happening with their child. A parent’s positive attitude towards learning could be expressed

by providing a quiet area for homework, by limiting T.V., computer

Welcome*** Community *** Hospitality***

Community Community Community Community ---- the Spirit of Friendship…the Spirit of Friendship…the Spirit of Friendship…the Spirit of Friendship… Friendship is an important part of everyone’s life; it is a

necessity to our own personal health and wellbeing… no

matter what age we are. However one of the greatest paradoxes of our modern society is that we can have 800

plus Facebook friends and yet still feel lonely and isolated…. In Innisfail there is an elderly, frail man who is always

either at the park along the Esplanade or sitting on the

bench seats along Edith Street… always in the same black suit trousers and white button up shirt. Growing up in

Innisfail I have remembered seeing him for as long as I can remember….hunched over his lap, wearing the same

clothes and sitting on the same street benches at all times of the day. I don’t know his name even though I have seen

him all my life. Hundreds of people must walk past him

each week and yet I have never seen him talking with another person…

This Thursday at 10am the Prep and Year 1 classes

are celebrating ‘Friendship’ with a Liturgy led by Fr

Michael in the Church. We ask parents, grandparents

and friends to please feel very welcome to come along and

be part of this celebration.

A Prayer to our Friends…

http://www.quoteswave.com

This week is also National Reconciliation Week with

yesterday being National Sorry Day… let us remember the

first peoples of our nation in the Spirit of Friendship…

And our prayers are also with the staff, students and

parents of Good Counsel College… may their friendships be

a source of faith and hope.

On Tuesday the 24th of June commencing at 6pm at St

Clare’s School Arts Centre, Christine will be hosting a Thrive,

Not Just Survive workshop titled…Emotional Energy . It will

run for around three hours with a cuppa and dessert

interval. We have a limited number of places available

so booking is essential. To book please email

[email protected] or phone Rosanna in the

office, by June 10th. Please see below for further

information.

May you have a blessed week…
