September 2016 Please plan on joining us on Sunday, September 25 th following worship for a Champagne Brunch to officially welcome our new members: Will, Amy and William Price, Al Bungard, and Jim and Arlene Wilkins. Remember… the good ‘ol days - when a new family moved into your neighborhood and you showed up on their doorstep with a warm, bubbly covered casserole or a fresh baked treat? Well, that’s what we’re planning to do to welcome The Price Family, Al, and Jim and Arlene (even though we already count them as family!) We’re asking everyone to bring a covered dish – a breakfast casserole or sweet treat and we’ll provide the Champagne, Mimosas and Bloody Marys (all non-alcoholic, of course!) And we’ll be serving some nice specialty coffees, as well. Now we at St. Giles are just about famous for our covered dish suppers – but we’ll only do Brunch once or twice a year for new members. And a champagne brunch to boot! So, we’ll be rolling out the red carpet and raising our champagne flutes to welcome these good folks! If you need some ideas about what to bring, we’re including a list on Page 2 of suggested recipes for casseroles and sweets. Better than that, we’re printing up a small recipe booklet that we’ll be leaving in the Narthex; so pick up a copy and see if there’s anything there that challenges your master chef culinary skills! Of course, let’s not forget some of the tried-and-true recipes that are ALWAYS a hit – oatmeal, banana nut or blueberry muffins, fruit and deli platters, biscuits with home-made jams and jellies, and just about anything with cinnamon on it! Please plan on joining us on Sunday, September 25th following worship for a

Champagne Brunch to officially welcome our new members: Will, Amy and

William Price, Al Bungard, and Jim and Arlene Wilkins.

Who Is Jesus? What a Difference a Lens Makes By Judy Yates Siker With Suggestions for Leaders by Lynn Miller Welcome to the 2016–2017 PW/Horizons Bible study, Who Is Jesus? Author Judy Yates Siker invites us to join her on “a journey to expand our understanding of who Jesus was and is—a journey of our hearts and our minds, a journey that we will take together. I invite you to be good conversation partners along the way, sharing with one another how you see and experience the various lenses and how these different perspectives impact your understanding of who Jesus is.”

1. ...according to Mark

Jesus is God’s son.

2. ...according to Matthew

Jesus is the long-awaited Jewish messiah whose

teachings open the kingdom of heaven to us here and now.

3. ...according to Luke Rejected by his own

Jesus, prophet of God, turns the world upside down with

his teachings.

4. ...according to John

Jesus and God are one.

5. ...according to Paul? Paul stresses the centrality of

the cross of Christ in understanding true

discipleship.

6. ...according to Hebrews

Believers are to hold fast to their faith in times of

adversity, and remain firm

in their commitment to Jesus who has run this race

before them and now reigns in glory with God.

7. ...according to the

noncanonical gospels

Early Christians held diverse views of who Jesus was.

8. according to the other Abrahamic faiths

Judaism, Christianity, and Islam understand Jesus in

very different ways.

9. according to contemporary

cultural interpretations? Each of us who reads the New

Testament is an interpreter of

the text; how we interpret depends in part on who we

are.

Each of the study’s nine lessons explores the question “Who is Jesus?” through a particular theological lens. Who is Jesus . . .

Life Principles From The Women of the Bible Book Two By Wayne Barber, Richard Shepherd, Eddie Rasnake God's Woman of Yesterday Speak Boldly to God's Women of Today. The women of the Bible play an integral, essential, and crucial role in the eternal plan of God. From heaven's point of view, women are always unique, matchless, and irreplaceable-they are never to be found in a subservient ranking within the kingdom of God. The woman characters featured in Women of the Bible (Book Two) demonstrates to us the struggles we all have in being faithful and submissive to God's design. Examples are given of those who received blessing from a surrendered walk with God as well as those who did not follow His directions. Other examples

are given of those who learned the ideals of inner beauty, surrender, and servanthood over time. Through a detailed study of each of these noteworthy women of the Bible, you will learn that God has called today's woman to play a significant role in society, in the home, and in the church. You will learn from their mistakes and discover that the blessings of God are heaped upon the woman who faithfully trusts the Lord in all situations.

Do you take comfort in knowing that God sees everything, including the wrongs that others have done

to you? What does God say through His Word about showing partiality to others? Do you realize that God loves you in spite of the fact that others don't seem to? Can it be said of you that you are a beautiful person on the inside? What do you need to do to make it more difficult for you to give into fleshly desires? Do you possess a submissive spirit as evidence of God working in your life?

In the pages of this book you will come face to face with such questions as:

Letter from the Editors WHOA! SERIOUSLY?

An Internet Café at St. Giles?

It has come to our attention that some of our members are missing the monthly newsletter! Why? Because they either (1) don’t have a computer (and don’t want one) or (2) have a computer but don’t know much about it or (3) they aren’t comfortable surfing around the internet because they’ve really never had the need to do so. And while many of us are very comfortable with computers

and the internet, and many of us have had jobs where we’ve had to make the change from pen and paper (or stones and tablet carving) to emails and internet research, many of us haven’t and/or don’t see the need. And we can respect that – whichever position you’re in. Our Church Newsletter and Photo Album together average around 20 pages every month – all in living color! Unfortunately, paper, ink and mailing costs are expensive, and it just isn’t fiscally reasonable to print and mail out our newsletter every month - everyone gets that… but that also means that some people don’t get to see the newsletter every month – and we want to fix that! So, the IT Team headed up by Bill Davis (IT Guy Extraordinaire) and the Membership Team (headed up by Janet Jackson) and Newsletter Editors (headed up by Teresa Hardwick) are putting their heads together to try and carve out a little corner somewhere on the church grounds to set up a small “internet café”. Right now, initial plans are calling for a few computers and/or laptops and a coffee pot! (No sense in reading the newsletter without your morning cup of java, right?) “Basic Computer Skills Training” will be offered, as well. Our vision is for folks to be able to come into the church, sit and have a cup of coffee and use the computer to enrich their church activities – read the monthly newsletter, browse our website and see what it has to offer and/or participate in daily online devotion and studies – there’s a whole host of links from our website to other Presbyterian news sources around the internet. So, please stand by… more news on this important initiative coming your way soon! If you know of someone who doesn’t receive our newsletter because they aren’t online, print this page out and share it with them! Grace and Blessings, Teresa Hardwick and Janet Jackson

To wrap up Avis Munro’s birthday “month”, we’ve added a few photos of her celebration to our Photo Album. We also had a request or two to print her poem. Here it is!

So, Doris came to me and said “My mom, she likes a rhyme. Could you, in your creative flow, produce something sublime?” I looked at her, just horrified “Have you no sense of dread? Have you no dignity? No class? A poem? No Way!” I said. Because a poem is not my thing! If I were to just let loose, I fear an endeavor of this kind might sound like Dr. Suess “She’s just one hundred once,” she said; “just once, this special day.” So, here I stand before you now With nothing left to say. EXCEPT… that I know Avis well. I’ve known her for awhile. And everything I’ve come to love is right there in her smile She loves to laugh, she loves to kid, she loves to flirt and tease. The men all love her, ladies too! At church, she’s our “main squeeze”. I mean that in the nicest way; I won’t suggest she’s loose. For if you know the wrath of her, you know she’d cook my goose!

Memory like an elephant? Yes! Her mind? Like a steel trap. Sharp as a tack and wittier still …and never needs a nap. A card shark with no equal here! They say she’s paid her dues And Bunco too… make no mistake! She doesn’t like to lose. Historically, she’s been a wife, a mother and a friend. Her family ties are tried and true… This family tree won’t bend. That clan of hers, the Clan Munro? They’re quite a site to see! With Harleys, flags and party gear and bagpipe harmony. As matriarch, she stands alone. A fearsome little lass, she rules them with her mighty fist and just a touch of class! A tiny thing, and not much more, she towers above the rest. We come today out of respect to wish her all the best. In closing this, I make a toast! Please join me and lift your cup “To Avis Dear: I want to be Just like you when I grow up!”

St. Giles Team Trivia – OH! What a night! August 26, 2016

We finished up our Hot Fun in the Summertime Team Trivia challenge by reliving “The British Invasion”! The questions were tough but our teams were tougher! The music featured songs by those popular Brits making the trip “across the pond” between 1964 –1970… but nothing our Trivia Aficionados couldn’t handle. It was a fun escape to the past with oldies but goodies by the likes of The Kinks, The Rolling Stones, The Dave Clark Five, Herman’s Hermits; and of course, THE BEATLES! Want to test your knowledge of The British Invasion? Check out these questions: (Answers at bottom of page.)

Of course, we wanted to mix it up a bit, so we threw in a few questions about Geography, History and this one asking you to determine if these famous icons were Real or Fictional. Do you know? Team Trivia will now go on hiatus for a bit, but we’d love to know when you’d like to see us have our next Team Trivia event! How often would you like to come to Trivia? Send us an email with your thoughts here – [email protected] . We love your feedback! Also, if you want to suggest a theme, let’s hear it! Answers: The British Invasion -1. Dusty Springfield 2. Gary Lewis & the Playboys, 3. The Dave Clark Five 4, The Hollies Bonus - 1. Can’t Buy Me Love 2. Twist & Shout 3. She Loves You 4. I Want to Hold Your Hand 5. Please, please me Real or Fiction – Fiction 3, 4, 5, 6, 10 Real: 1, 2, 7, 8, 9

To make sure we include your birthday on the list, just click on this link: Here’s My Birthday and let us know the birthdays of all of your family who attend St. Giles. Want to share your anniversary also? Are you celebrating a banner year of something significant? (50th Wedding Anniversary, 10 year anniversary with the church, etc.?) We’ll publish that too! Tell us about it!

The name September comes from the Latin septem for seven, since this was the seventh month of the Roman calendar.

September has several birth flowers–the forget-me-not, the morning glory, and the aster.

Your birth stone is the sapphire and gives the wearer luck. Sapphire is usually envisioned as a blue stone but also comes in green, pink, purple and clear.

You’re in good company with some very famous birthdays this month–Dr. Phil (9/1), Beyonce Knowles (9/4), Pippa Middleton (9/6), Adam Sandler (9/9), Michael Buble (9/9), Harry Connick (9/11), Niall Horan (9/13), Jimmy Fallon (9/19), Bruce Springsteen (9/23) and Will Smith (9/25)
