LEAVES, LIGHTHOUSES & LOBSTERS Maine in the fall - the name says it all!

October 12 - 19, 2019

————————————————

A Personal Invitation from Marilyn & Larry Kopke, managing officers of Cheyenne Travel/Please Go Away™ Vacations. They personally created this fall experience two decades ago and have personally hosted each year since.

Please join the two of us as we personally host this exciting and relaxing autumn adventure to an area we truly love. It is an amazing New England fall experience. When you join us, you will experience the beauties and wonders of leaves, lighthouses and lobsters. But, just as important are our personal friends, the real “Mainers” that you will meet and who will take us behind the scenes for true in depth educational and meaningful experiences.

You’ll stay for a whole week at the famous Bar Harbor Inn, situated near downtown Bar Harbor, Maine, New England’s most enchanting island resort. Your private balcony oceanfront accommodations will literally be within a few feet of the water’s edge. Quaint tree-lined streets, a village square, inviting shops, and many fabulous restaurants are within easy walking distance. The famous “Shore Path” upon which the likes of the Vanderbilt’s, Rockefeller’s and their contemporaries strolled fronts the shore line of the Bar Harbor Inn.

Our limited-sized group will be privately chauffeured in a luxury motor coach on daily outings over both the back roads of the state’s interior and along the ocean-hugging highways and surf-pounding waves of Maine’s rugged and lighthouse-dotted coastline. Each evening we will return to the comforts of our Bar Harbor Inn accommodations and the Inn’s warm fireplace. Sequence of events and included sightseeing may be altered to provide the most optimal experiences possible.

The time of this fall 2019 “Travel Treasure”™ has been carefully chosen to offer the finest resort accommodations, itinerary, and values of season-closing sales of Bar Harbor’s shops. You will experience many of Maine’s unique offerings in depth – you will enjoy “A Real Maine Fall Experience”!

Unlike most travel offerings, “all inclusive” pricing is featured. Everything detailed in this brochure - even the round trip air transportation from Wichita and travel protection insurance - are all “included” in the one price you pay before departure.

Please join us by reserving early. Doing so will lock in your spaces. Spaces are limited. A unique 100% RESERVATION DEPOSIT REFUND GUARANTEE is in place to protect early reservations from loss.

Please check the following pages for exciting details and how you can easily join us. Ask questions and reserve your spaces. Don’t wait - act now!

Here are some of the exciting things you will experience - sequence subject to change: Day 1 Comfortable flights take us to Bangor, Maine, where we will be transported to Bar Harbor, Maine. We will get our first eye level glimpses of colorful foliage en route. Upon arrival we will relax in our oceanfront rooms.

Day 2 Following a relaxing and bountiful Maine Breakfast (included daily) overlooking Frenchman’s Bay, nearby Acadia National Park will be experienced. Opened in 1916, Acadia was the first national park east of the Mississippi, and was the first national park whose land was donated entirely by private citizens. 360-degree panoramic views will be enjoyed from on top of Cadillac Mountain; at 1,530 feet the highest peak on the Atlantic Coast north of Brazil. Popovers and Tea, an Acadia tradition, will be enjoyed at Jordan’s Pond followed by the opportunity to walk on part of the Park’s famous “Carriage Roads.” Later this evening enjoy a Welcome Wine and Crackers Reception followed by an included Welcome Shore Dinner in the lovely Bar Harbor Inn dining facilities. It will feature clam chowder, corn on the cob, boiled potatoes, steamers, clams, whole lobster, Wild Maine blueberry pie, and tea or coffee (those who prefer can have steak). Day 3 Today we will be exposed to the agriculture and aquaculture industries of Maine in meaningful and memorable ways. Following breakfast we will learn about the “Wild Maine Blueberry” Industry as a professor from the University of Maine presents a special fast-moving and informative seminar about the growing, cultivation and marketing of this huge cash crop. The professor travels from the University to the Bar Harbor to present this private seminar just for our group. Then, this afternoon we learn about the major cash crop of Maine’s aquaculture industry – lobsters. We will be guests aboard a lobster boat – The Lulu – for a two-hour seminar at sea. To round out the day’s activities you will have free time to explore nearby downtown Bar Harbor on your own, to enjoy the ambiance of the Bar Harbor Inn, or whatever else appeals to you. This evening, have dinner privately, or join your hosts for an “on your own” dinner at one of Bar Harbor’s most-popular restaurants. Day 4 Enjoy a day of sightseeing as we go “”Upsouth.” Rockport, Camden (home of Edna St. Vincent Millay and one of America’s 10-most beautiful cities according to Forbes Magazine) will be a stop. Maine’s beautiful coastline south of Bar Harbor, a Maine Made Products Center, Maine’s Lighthouse Museum, and more will be experienced.

Day 5 Sunrise in North America can first be seen from atop Cadillac Mountain. Offered (weather permitting) for the especially energetic, this no-cost optional activity can be breathtaking. Today we’ll enjoy included tours of Jackson Lab, the museum of woodcarver Wendell Gilley, and the picturesque shores of Somes Sound as we travel to examine “up close” Maine’s most-photographed lighthouse – Bass Harbor Head Light. The subject of many photographs and paintings, this famous lighthouse is one of more than 65 found along Maine’s shoreline (only Michigan has more). Day 6 In Maine, when traveling up the coast to the north, locals say they are going “Downeast”. We’ll travel “Downeast” through quaint seaside towns like Milbridge and Machias en route Roosevelt Campobello International Park located on Campobello Island, New Brunswick, Canada. Within the Park are the summer cottage and grounds where President Franklin Roosevelt vacationed. The most-photographed lighthouse in New Brunswick, East Quoddy Light, with its red cross will be added to our travel experiences. Also, beautiful red and white striped West Quoddy Lighthouse just south of the Canadian border will be experienced. Large colorful rolling fields of blueberry plants and cranberry bogs will be viewed “up close”. We will meet and visit with growers of these unique crops Day 7 Today, the choice is yours! You can either enjoy a “day on your own” exploring Bar Harbor, enjoying the amenities of the Bar Harbor Inn, or just relaxing; or you can choose to join those going for last-minute shopping at L.L. Bean’s outlet store and other traditional Maine shops in nearby Ellsworth, plus some Maine surprises, including a cottage industry bell maker whose creations are featured in America’s finest gift shops. Later, we’ll all enjoy our included Farewell Wine and Crackers Party and Farewell Dinner featuring succulent selections of foods from Maine.

Day 8 All good things must come to an end. We will be transported to the airport for our return flights home.

Did you know?

Maine abounds in natural assets – 542,629 acres of state and national parks, including Acadia National Park (one of the top 10 most visited national parks in the United States). Maine also claims America’s first chartered city: York, 1641.

Maine produces 99% of all the blueberries in the country. Potatoes rank 7th in acreage and 10th in annual production. Maine is nationally famed for its shellfish. Over 47 million pounds of lobster were harvested in the last annual reporting period. During the same year the total of all shellfish and fin fish harvested was approximately 247 million pounds with a total value of $277 million.

Its rock bound coastline provides magnificent scenery and is the home of the tallest mountain on the Atlantic Seaboard north of Rio de Janeiro. Maine’s coastline is the home of the second-highest number of lighthouses in the United States.

Lighthouses Only Michigan has more lighthouses than Maine. You will experience some of the most memorable, like West Quoddy Head Lighthouse shown here. Located at Lubec, Maine this colorful lighthouse is located on the “eastern most” point of land in the United States. You will be able to walk right up the lighthouse and take fantastic pictures. Among other lighthouses will be Bass Harbor Head, Egg Rock, and East Quoddy Head, situated on The Bay of Fundy.

Leaves Maine is known for its fall foliage covered granite mountains and amazing autumn vistas. On this departure you will stand atop Cadillac Mountain (the highest mountain on the Atlantic coastline north of Rio de Janeiro) and see cascading coverings of variegated colored leaves. You will experience winding back roads covered with canopies of leaves. You will also experience fields of “blood red” foliage (the leaves remaining on the vines of the harvested wild blue berry fields).

Lobsters Your private balconies at the Bar Harbor Inn will allow you to overlook the “comings and goings” of the many tiny lobster boats daily attending to their traps. While in Bar Harbor, by special arrangement, you will have a special bonus and experience a “real” live lobster boat ride and 2-hour “at sea” seminar with a knowledgeable lobster expert. You will also travel to the Bay of Fundy (World’s largest tidal changes) and learn about deep sea lobstering and fishing in the Bay and in the Atlantic Ocean.

Bar Harbor Inn Your home away from home. You will experience much of Maine on daily outings, returning each evening to the welcoming warmth of the inn’s fireplace. You will enjoy your private balcony (shown here) that looks out over Frenchmen’s Bay and the foliage covered Porcupine Islands. Just below your balconies is Bar Harbor’s famous Shore Path created in the 1800s and enjoyed by the likes of the Rockefellers and Vanderbilt’s (it’s a perfect early morning stroll).

Cranberries You will meet and visit with our personal friend Bob Hammond. Bob is 9-time past president of the Maine Farm Bureau and a leader in the Maine agricultural industry. He and his family own and operate cranberry bogs, blueberry barrens, and other related farming interests. A true “Mainer” with a most interesting personal history, Bob tells it like it is and has strong opinions about governmental regulations. He also thinks the farmers standing hip deep in a cranberry bog in the Ocean Spray ad really need help.

Wild Maine Blueberries A professor at the University of Maine, recognized as an expert in the growing and marketing of Wild Maine Blueberries throughout the United States and many foreign countries, will present a private program to reveal the “behind the scenes” elements of this Maine industry, The professor will reveal how Wild Maine Blueberries are completely different than bush blueberries and how they are so important to Maine’s economy.

Maine Made Products A leader in the banking industry for a number of years, Kathy Morrill, another of the friends we have made over the years, gave up the financial world and purchased a small Maine cheese making facility and created the award winning “State of Maine Cheese Company.” In addition to various cheeses being available for purchase when we stop here, so will a large variety of additional “Maine Made” products. Our short visit is designed to be an opportunity to purchase, should you so desire, a bit of Maine.

Cottage Industry Bell Maker U.S. Bells are a product much more easily found on the internet and in fine gift shops throughout the nation than they are in their home state of Maine. Dick Fisher, shown here with Marilyn, along with his family owns and operates an art complex producing hand-poured brass bells of superior quality, along with a variety of other products. Hidden deep in the Maine woods, it is a true cottage industry unique to Maine. Dick will personally explain his operation. Their shop houses truly superb quality products.
