SMEClabs was started as a research and development wing of SMEC Automation Pvt. Ltd. in early 2001. The main objective of this division was to cater to the research requirements of the parent company, incorporating the latest in technological advances. In a short while it evolved further to encompass the training of SMEC service engineers and technicians to empower them to implement more efficient and advanced installations worldwide.

In due course of time, the doors were opened to experienced individuals with technical backgrounds, who were interested in pursuing the demanding profession of performing error-free instrumentation related installations and service jobs.

Up until recently the minimum qualification to be trained at this facility was 2 years of experience in a related field. Keeping in view the demands of the present industry standards and the huge demand for qualified automation engineers worldwide, SMEClabs now provides training for B.Tech and Diploma students. The training is imparted in a way that is both time-effective and efficient, allowing the fresh graduates to have a smooth transition from theory to actual real life practice.

The last decade has seen phenomenal advances in technology, particularly in instrumentation related fields. Protocols used for communication become more advanced with each passing year and so do most of the control equipment. Keeping abreast of the changes as they happen is the basis, motivating the team that works here.

FACILITIES

• Emphasis on practical oriented training In addition to enhancing theoretical knowledge, at the labs we stress mainly on exposing students to real-world systems. This enables them to appreciate and fully understand the complexities involved in operating real systems.

• Grass-root level approach SMEClabs engineers follow an easy to understand approach to training. This means that students do not require any previous knowledge of the automation field as all the basics are covered in detail.

• A team of experienced engineers form the faculty All the engineers that are entrusted with the responsibility of training are Sr. Service Engineers having 2-8 years of on-site experience in the related fields. The classroom environment is friendly and fully interactive.

• Training oriented for both marine and industrial automation fields The training provided by us is not limited to industrial or marine fields alone - the student will learn systems applicable in both industries.

• Ongoing projects involvement SMEClabs is the also the development centre for SMEC Automation, here the Engineers plan, draft and execute industrial projects. Students studying at SMEClabs will be involved in such ongoing projects to get a feel for the real working environment.

• Includes Industrial visits Students will be taken for industrial visits in and around Kerala to industries that have implemented the systems under study. Typical systems covered are Auto Mains Failure (AMF) systems, Pump Control systems, Power control systems etc. Please Note : Visits are possible provided we have nearby projects at that time

• Individual attention to each student We understand the importance of providing individual attention to each student. The course continues at a pace that is comfortable for the student.

• Students learn on actual PLC’s rather than software simulators We have a large number of PLC’s on which the students can gain hands-on experience directly, removing any need for software based simulators.

• Personal development training We offer disciplined personal development training after successful completion of the course, to enhance the student’s future opportunities further.

• State of the art lab facilities Students learn PLCs that are preferred by all the industry majors. This ensures that the skills attained will always be beneficial irrespective of the organization where you are placed.

Q & A

After all, what is a PLC?

Programmable Logic Controllers, used extensively throughout the industry worldwide, the PLC controls much of our daily lives, from Food & Drink manufacture, Oil, Rail, Nuclear, Airports, Traffic management and many more.

For example all the processes on a typical oil rig are centrally controlled by a PLC system, which acts as the central decision maker for the whole process.

And SCADA?

Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition. This is a computer based system that provides valuable production information in real time.

A SCADA system consists of one or more PC based terminals networked to a PLC or several PLC’s throughout the installation. Data from the process is gathered from the PLCs and displayed graphically on the SCADA terminals. This helps to see remotely the whole operation from a more convenient location like a control room. For example, an operator in an automobile assembly plant need not control or supervise the engine testing facility by being physically present there.

He can rather use a SCADA system in the control room, from which he can simultaneously operate the whole factory.

What about an HMI?

HMI stands for ‘Human Machine Interface’. This is an operator touch screen that graphically represents a process that a PLC controls.

The operator can both view and interact with the process through this terminal screen. For example a navigational panel used by the second officer on board a ship is usually an HMI system.

What is meant by PLC Communication?

Communication happens between PLC’s, SCADA systems, HMI systems, servo motors, actuators, indicators and other related devices used in the field through various protocols suited for these devices.

Learn to configure these interconnections and the protocols used in their communication.

What’s the big deal about PLC Ladder Programming?

Ladder programming was developed in the early 70’s and was based upon electrical schematics that electrical engineers were familiar with. It is extremely efficient and useful for all circuit analysis and is the backbone of all PLC systems.

It is useful in PLC’s as it is easy to modify and removes the need of physically rewiring connections in case of minor or even major overhauls in an industry.

Do you provide Placement assistance?

As our parent company has been installing and servicing almost all types of industries for the last decade. Hence we are in a position to assist the students in procuring engineering jobs in both industrial and marine field.
