We are going to design a game for Boris. Boris is a group of children with light to moderate disabilities, cognitive and physical, in the age category 12 to 20. They are all students at Orion: special education. The game will be used in their gymnastic lessons.

How can sports equipment be augmented with sensors and hybrid games in order to support physical education of kids with strongly varying special needs in a classroom setting, while making learning results more measurable?

In the next 20 weeks we’re working on this project and we’ll come up with different ideas to make the gymnastic lessons more social, creative and fun!

Difference

Digital Communication

Big difference in levels between children even within groups

Most of them loved the Wii and Kinect Varies between children:- no communication at all- joking with each other

Best instructions arePerform what you want to explain and repeat!

DifficultyVaries between children:- speed- catching objects

Page 17: Playful learning

18th of February

Easy to understandLot of excitement while playing:laughingthrilling

Downtime if the ball rolls awayIntense physical activity:short playtimecould be difficult for Boris

The act of having to react quickly is fun

Keep things simple

Thrilling when waiting for the music to stopEntertaining, feels like a little party

It emphasises who lose the game

Adjustable rules:Teams, extra tasks, complexity...

FOUR SQUARE

25th of February

Easy to add rules

High motor skills needed

It was going more fluently when we changed rules:the first bounce has to take place in your own section

Thrilling:to hide you XSto find the other XS straps

The swinxs is additional fun factorwhen you bleep the straps

Page 23: Playful learning

SWINX CIRCLE ADJUSTEDThrilling when waiting for the music to stop

The addition of playing a new game with a dance move is fun and challenging

The player who bleeps his strap first has to do his last dance move, with that move we think of a new game.

2nd of March

A new game turned into ‘tikkertje’ with the different dance moves

Page 24: Playful learning

TIKKERTJE BACKWARDS

2nd of March

Against your natureIt’s fun to walk backwards

Multiple ‘tikker’ is funYou can coordinate your attacks

BUSKRUITThrilling because:last player can save youit’s fun to hide

Page 25: Playful learning

WATER GUN ATTACK

Unknown reactionsThe suprise element: to do something unexpected

Different rolesCo working instead of against each otherHigh motor skills neededMiscommunication is annoying and ruins your game

Page 27: Playful learning

6th of March

It’s a known game but slightly adjustedREVERSED HIDE AND SEEK

The familiar thrill of finding someoneNot very competitive because it’s the thrill and fun that matters

There is one player who hides himself, the other players count down and one by one begin searching for the one who’s hiding. If you find the hidden player, you hide with him! Until the last searching player finds the group.

You can follow the other searching players
