STEELERS VS. GIANTSNOVEMBER 4, 2012

STEELERS 24, GIANTS 20

The Giants had a four-game winning streak snapped at the hands of the Steelers, 24-20, at MetLife Stadium.

The Giants had hoped to put a triumphant end to a difficult and emotional week as they sought to honor those suffering in the wake of Hurricane Sandy. They held a “Salute to Service” game and welcomed 150 servicemen and women and 100 first responders. But they fell flat in the game. They were outscored 14-0 in the fourth quarter, capped off by Steelers running back Isaac Redman’s one-yard touchdown run. Eli Manning, who has orchestrated several fourth quarter rallies over the past two seasons, was unable to repeat the magic, as New York fell to 6-3 on the season.

The Giants struggled on offense all day. They gained only 182 yards, including 68 on the ground. Manning completed only 10 of 24 passes for 125 yards. The Giants converted only two of 10 third down opportunities. However, the team did have a few bright spots on defense. For the second game in a row, the Giants scored a defensive touchdown when Michael Boley recovered a fumble forced by Osi Umenyiora and ran it back 70 yards to give the Giants their first lead of the game. Justin Tuck recorded two sacks, Jason Pierre-Paul also added a sack and Corey Webster intercepted a Ben Roethlisberger pass. Boley led the team in tackles with 10 in addition for his return for a TD.

One the offensive end, Andre Brown scored its lone touchdown on a one-yard run.

GIANTS AT COWBOYSOCTOBER 29, 2012

GIANTS 29, COWBOYS 24

The 2012 Giants have become a high-wire act in helmets and shoulder pads. You’re never sure what you’re going to get, but it’s virtually guaranteed to thrill. In Week 8 against Dallas, they jumped out to a 23-0 lead, lost it all and trailed by a point in the fourth quarter, regained the advantage, couldn’t clinch the game despite intercepting a pass with 1:03 remaining, and in the final moments survived a) a defensive pass interference penalty that was waived off, b) a touchdown that was overturned after a replay review, and c) the Cowboys somehow getting three shots to throw the ball into the end zone in the final 10 seconds.

Somehow it all worked out in the Giants’ favor and they walked out of Cowboys Stadium with a 29-24 victory. The last two of Lawrence Tynes’ five field goals were the only points scored in the fourth quarter. The Giants improved to 6-2 at midseason for the sixth time in Coughlin’s nine seasons as head coach and to 4-0 in Cowboys Stadium, which opened in 2009.

After dominating the game early, the Giants appeared to have lost the game when Dez Bryant got behind the secondary and caught a pass from Romo in the back of the end zone with 10 seconds to play. But while 94,067 fans screamed in delirium and the Giants worried they had suffered an excruciating defeat, the touchdown, like all scoring plays, was reviewed. The replay clearly showed Bryant’s hand (his first body part to make con-tact with the ground) hit the white end line when he landed. No touchdown.

The Giants had six takeaways – four interceptions, including two by Stevie Brown – and two fumble recoveries (one by Brown). Tony Romo threw for 437 yards, Jason Witten’s 18 receptions were the most ever against the Giants, and three Dallas receivers each had more than 100 yards.

REDSKINS VS. GIANTSOCTOBER 21, 2012

GIANTS 27, REDSKINS 23

When it comes to facing NFC East rivals in 2012, the third time was the charm for the New York Giants, as they were able to improve to 1-2 in the division, and 5-2 overall. The Redskins took a 23-20 lead on a 30-yard catch by Santana Moss with 1:32 left in the game. However, the Giants’ offense, which seemed to be out of sync for much of the game, took the lead back only two plays into the drive. Eli Manning would find Victor Cruz on a streak route for the game-winning 77-yard touchdown pass with 1:13 left in regulation.

The Giants’ defense struggled in the first half, as the Redskins were able to come away with scores on all three of their drives in the half. However, the defense came up with many big plays in the second half, despite giving up yards and several conversions on third and fourth-down. In the game, the Giants’ defense recorded an interception, came up with three sacks, and forced three fumbles, all of which they recovered. The last fumble was on the Redskins’ last drive and was recovered by Jayron Hosley, who Santana Moss beat for the go-ahead score on Washington’s previous possesion.

Eli Manning ended up completing 26-of-40 passes in the game for 337 yards, one touch-down and two interceptions. Victor Cruz caught seven passes for 131 yards and the game-winning touchdown, which was the longest in the final two minutes of the fourth quarter in Giants’ history. Andre Brown and Ahmad Bradshaw each scored on one-yard runs in the first and fourth quarters, respectively. The Giants’ 5-2 start to the season is their eighth in nine seasons under Tom Coughlin, with the exception being a 6-1 start in 2008.

the giants returned to candlestick Park for the first time since the 2011 nFc championship game and dominated the 49ers, 26-3. Picking up from where they left off the week before, the giants’ offense looked to establish the running game early on, this time, against one of the nFL’s best rushing defenses. this strategy would pay off in the second quarter, when Eli Manning found Victor cruz off a play-action fake for a six-yard touchdown pass, to give the giants a 7-3 lead that they would only build on for the rest of the game.

David Wilson showed his explosiveness on the kickoff that started the second half, as he returned it 66 yards, to the 49ers 32-yard line. ahmad bradshaw would cap off the short drive, when he bulldozed his way into the end zone from one yard out in the third quarter to account for the other giants touchdown, extending their lead to 17-3. that was only the second rushing touchdown allowed by the 49ers in their last 44 games. Lawrence tynes made field goals of 34, 30, 22, and 32 yards, to account for the rest of the game’s scoring.

the giants’ defense seemed to bend at times but never broke in the game, as 49ers’ kicker David akers’ 42-yard field goal in the first quarter accounted for all of the points that the giants give up. this was the first time in two years that the giants kept the opposing team out of the end zone for an entire game (chicago, 2010). 49ers’ quarter-back, alex smith, had three of his passes intercepted by the giants’ defense, on the day. in addition to forcing the 49ers’ offense into making mistakes, the giants’ pass-rush had their best performance of the season, as they recorded a season-high six sacks in the game. Prince amukamara’s interception in the second quarter would set up the drive that resulted in the giants’ first touchdown of the day. antrel Rolle intercepted smith on back-to-back drives in the third quarter, returning each one more than 20 yards, allowing the giants’ offense to start immediately in the red zone, where they came away with field goals on both possessions.

BROWNS VS. GIANTSOCTOBER 7, 2012

GIANTS 41, BROWNS 27

The Giants overcame an early 14-0 deficit by outscoring the Browns 41-6 the rest of the way, as New York defeated Cleveland, 41-27, at MetLife Stadium. The win improved their record to 3-2.

After Giants running back Ahmad Bradshaw lost a fumble on the first play of scrimmage, Browns running back Trent Richardson found the end zone from 15-yards out just two plays later, to give the Browns a 7-0 lead. The Browns would reach the end zone again on their very next drive, after quarterback Brandon Weeden hit wide receiver Josh Gordon deep on a 62-yard strike to give the Browns that 14-0 advantage. But the G-Men woud rally.

A three-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Eli Manning to wide receiver Victor Cruz, cut the Giants’ deficit to 14-7. The second quarter was when the Giants’ offense came alive. A four yard touchdown run by Bradshaw, a seven-yard pass from Manning to Cruz, and two field goals (29, 40) from kicker Lawrence Tynes helped the Giants establish a 27-17 lead at halftime.

In the second half, the Giants continued to move the ball well on the ground and via the pass. Cruz scored again in the third quarter, this time on a 28-yard pass from Manning. Bradshaw carried the ball 15 times for 120 yards in the second half. Finally, rookie run-ning back David Wilson recorded the first touchdown of his NFL career on a 40-yard run up the middle, where he was virtually untouched on the play. Bradshaw’s 200-yard rush-ing day on 30 carries was a career best for him, and was the first time that the Giants had a 200-yard rusher in a single game since 2008, (Derrick Ward, Panthers). Cruz’s three touchdown receptions were also a career-high mark for him.

The Giants were without several starters for the contest, but the Giants reserved once again came up big. Rookie wide receiver Rueben Randle, filling in for Ramses Barden (con-cussion) hauled in six catches for 82 yards, while safety Stevie Brown, filling in for Kenny Phillips (knee) recorded an interception, and a fumble recovery on a kickoff.

GIANTS AT EAGLESSEPTEMBER 30, 2012

EAGLES 19, GIANTS 17

Lawrence Tynes’ 54-yard field-goal attempt in the final seconds fell a few feet shy of the uprights, as the Giants loss to their NFC East foe, the Philadelphia Eagles, 19-17. The loss dropped the Giants to 2-2, with both losses coming to division rivals.

The first half of this game was dominated by the defenses. The lone touchdown of the half came when Eagles’ wide receiver DeSean Jackson got open in the secondary as Michael Vick found him in the left corner of end zone, with 1:47 left in the half. The Giants quickly responded with a field goal from Tynes with 0:05 left in the half as the Eagles took a 7-3 lead into the half.

Both teams’ offenses seemed to come alive in the second half. After Eagles’ kicker Alex Henery made a 20 yard field goal to extend their lead to 10-3 on the first drive of the second half, the Giants came back on the very next drive tie the game at 10 apiece, when Eli Manning hit Victor Cruz on a slant route. Cruz then broke a tackle, and waltzed into the end zone on the 14 yard pass from Manning, for his second score of the season. The Eagles got another field goal from Henery on their next drive, a 48 yarder, to give the Eagles the lead again, at 13-10.

The back and forth scoring would continue, as the Eagles were led by Vick and running back LeSean McCoy. Henery was set up with a 26 yard attempt that narrowly made it through the right side of the goal post, to give the Eagles the lead again, at 19-17, with 1:49 left in the game.

The Giants’ final drive had a sloppy start, which included a fumble and a near interception on the first two plays. However, Giants’ wide receiver Ramses Barden, who had a career game last week against the Panthers, drew two defensive pass interference calls that gained 29 yards total for the Giants. However, on a deep pass intended for him, he was called for offensive pass interference, moving the ball back to the 37-yard line, setting up Tynes’ potential game-winning field goal that fell short.

GIANTS AT PANTHERSSEPTEMBER 20, 2012

GIANTS 36, PANTHERS 7

It was surely a night to remember for the Giants’ 2009 draft class, as the third and fourth round picks from that draft, Ramses Barden and Andre Brown, had career games. The Giants as a team got out to a much quicker start than they did in their previous game, as they led the Panthers 20-0 at halftime. Things didn’t get much better for the Panthers in the second half, as they eventually fell to the Giants, 36-7, at Bank of America Stadium.

Brown carried the ball 20 times for 113 yards and two touchdowns in his first career start. Barden hauled in nine receptions for 138 yards in his first career start. Eli Manning completed 28 passes for 288 yards and a touchdown. Tight end Martellus Bennett caught his third touchdown pass of the season on a 14 yard pass from Manning on the Giants’ opening drive. The catch gave Bennett a touchdown in each of his first three games as a New York Giant.

The Giants’ offense came away with points on their first four possessions of the game. Kicker Lawrence Tynes’ 30 yard field goal with 12:49 in the third quarter gave the Giants their biggest lead of the night, as they extended their lead to 23-0, before Cam Newton got the Panthers on the board for their only score of the night on a one yard run with 6:26 left in the third quarter.

Cam Newton threw three interceptions, and was sacked twice. Michael Boley’s inter-ception in the fourth quarter was his third of the season. So far, he has intercepted a pass in each of the Giants’ games in the 2012 season. With a strong, balanced effort from the offense, defense and special teams, the Giants were able to improve to 2-1 on the season.

BUCCANEERS VS. GIANTSSEPTEMBER 17, 2012

GIANTS 41, BUCCANEERS 34

The Giants were able to rebound from a sloppy first half in order to come out on the right end of a hard fought 41-34 thriller over the visiting Tampa Bay Buccaneers in MetLife Stadium.

Eli Manning threw for three touchdowns, and established a new career high with 510 yards passing, also second most in the history of the franchise (Phil Simms, 1985). Manning continued his trend of excelling in the fourth quarter, as he completed passes to Victor Cruz and Martellus Bennett for touchdowns of 80, and 33 yards, respectively. Hakeem Nicks scored on a 23 yard pass from Manning in the second quarter. Andre Brown recorded the first touchdown of his career, on a two yard run, to cap off the scor-ing for the game and give the Giants the lead for good. Giants’ Kicker Lawrence Tynes accounted for four made field goals.

The first half saw Manning throw three interceptions, the last of which was returned 60 yards by Tampa Bay cornerback Eric Wright for a touchdown with 0:08 left in the first half. The return increased the Buccaneers’ lead to 24-13. Tampa Bay was able to capital-ize on each interception, as their first three touchdowns came off of Giants’ turnovers. The Buccaneers seemed to have the game in control Connor Barth made a 52 yard field goal, to extend Tampa Bay’s lead to 27-13. From there, it was basically all Giants, as they outscored Tampa Bay, 28-7 the rest of the way, to improve their record to 1-1 on the season. The Giants recorded 604 total yards in the game, which was second most in the history of the franchise (N.Y. Yanks, 1950).

COWBOYS VS. GIANTSSEPTEMBER 5, 2012

GIANTS 17, COWBOYS 24

The Giants’ season opening 24-17 loss to the Dallas Cowboys in MetLife Stadium certainly left a sour feeling in their collective stomach. Seven months to the day after they won Super Bowl XLVI, the Giants were hoping to take a strong initial step toward another successful season. But their only lead was 3-0 and they trailed by two touch-downs in the fourth quarter on their way to becoming the first defending champion to lose an opener in 13 years (Denver, 1999).

Tony Romo threw three touchdown passes, including strikes of 10 and 40 yards to Kevin Ogletree, who scored the first two touchdowns of his four-year, 32-game career, and a 34-yarder to Miles Austin that put the Cowboys comfortably ahead in the fourth. Dan Bailey kicked a 33-yard field goal for Dallas.

The game had many turning points from the Giants’ perspective, but perhaps none as crucial as a strange sequence in the fourth quarter. The Cowboys led, 17-10, when they drove from their own 18 to the Giants’ 14. But back-to-back 10-yard penalties pushed them back to the 34, where they faced a first-and-30. The Giants seemingly had the upper hand, but on the next snap, Austin juked his way past cornerback Justin Tryon – who took over for the injured Michael Coe, who was filling in for the inactive Prince Amukamara – and caught Romo’s pass before Rolle could get over from his safety posi-tion and sprinted to the end zone for an unlikely touchdown that gave Dallas a 24-10 lead with 5:57 left.
