EDITOR’S NOTEWelcome to Aurora!

The Town of Aurora, Central Counties Tourism, The Aurora Chamber of Commerce and Sport Aurora have teamed up to provide this Tourism Guide for our sport visitors. We want you to feel welcomed and have your stay here, no matter how short, to be worth a trip back; time and again.

In this winter and spring issue please find our Town Maps that show the fields and facilities that you will be visiting for your game, tournament or competition. We have also included a map that shows you various businesses that serve the sport tourist. If you are in Town during a home game of the Aurora Tigers, please come watch our Junior “A” Team play some great hockey.

We have included some “Hidden Gems” that you may want to visit and have included some additional Town recreational features that might interest you during your “down-time”.

Of course, our advertisers are an important part of the publication, so please consider them when you make your choices for products and services while in Aurora. We ensure that they are informed when events are happening, so they are ready for you. We know that waiting for service isn’t pleasant when you are on a tight schedule, so consider calling ahead if you can to book space for your team meal or after-game wind-down.

The Town of Aurora celebrates and supports the role of sport in our community. The Town proclaimed 2015 as The Year of Sport to raise awareness of the importance of sport and healthy living.

Aurora encourages our residents to explore the benefits of being active. The Town offers a wide variety of sports programs and activities for all ages to enjoy.

During your visit, we hope that you have the chance to discover our beautiful Town. We have a variety of first-class, multi-use sporting and cultural facilities such as our newly renovated Aurora Family Leisure Complex. We also have a historic downtown core with several speciality shops, a full pedestrian trail system connecting to The Town of Newmarket and more than 500 acres of parkland. You can also partake in one of our many popular special events throughout the year or visit the Aurora Cultural Centre to learn more about our Town and its heritage.

To the parents, coaches and participants, keep up the hard work and dedication to your sport. Your drive and passion for the game will continue to inspire others.

WELCOME TO AuRORA IN YORk REGION!As the parent of three boys, all of whom play sports that require us to travel, I am very familiar with days and weekends being spent at arenas and fields across the province and beyond. The age old question is what to do with the family in the hours between games and after the last game in the evening before heading to bed.

There are only so many hours I can spend in a parking lot or hotel lobby before the kids start driving me nuts. Being in the tourism industry, I understand that every community has neat things to see and do. But for most tournaments we attend, there isn’t any information provided to the coaches and parents in advance or even at the event.

That’s why I was so excited when Sport Aurora approached me with an idea to provide its’ sports visitors with information about other things to see and do in the municipality. You can now explore the area between games and get in some family time because if you are like us, most of your time is spent shuttling in different directions. Or you can plan a team activity at a place you may not have even known existed.

Aurora and other communities through the region also have a multitude of festivals and events taking place on weekends throughout the year. When you know where you are spending the day/weekend because of sporting events, take some time to get on the municipal, regional and/or Central Counties website to see what great things are happening while you are in town. Last year, we got to take in Aurora’s Haunted Forest, which was a big hit with the older two boys and even my littlest liked it (I took him only crawling into bed with us one night as a win).

Anyway, we are thrilled that you are here in our neck of the woods. There is a lot more to this area than arenas, fields and diamonds. I hope you take some time to get out and explore.

Why is there sport tourism? Why not just tourism? The word tourism usually has the connotation of a time for recreation, to rejuvenate. Sport tourism draws people to a destination because they are involved in a sport, as a participant or an observer. A sport is the attraction or draw that brings people to Aurora for a weekend tournament and we welcome you to “our Town”.

The members of the Aurora Chamber of Commerce view sport tourism as an opportunity to serve our guests. Our intent is for each visitor to experience great service and enjoy their time in Aurora so they visit many times.

Whether you are buying sports equipment, a gift or getting a coffee or food and beverage before during or after the game, you will find it all here in Aurora. It is what businesses in Aurora are here for; to provide the products and services you visit us.

Sport Aurora provides its members with the capacity to deliver high quality programs, involves people in healthy, supervised and safe activity, engages community members through volunteerism and recognizes excellence in sports. The Chamber supports the work of Sport Aurora, its member organizations and the many volunteers who ensure quality sporting events happen.

Built in 1862, Hillary House is recognized by the National Historic Sites and Monuments Board as one of Canada’s best examples of Gothic Revival architecture. It contains a significant collection of medical instruments, books, papers, household furnishings, and equipment dating from the early nineteenth to the late twentieth century and is open to the public as Hillary House, the koffler Museum of Medicine.

The Aurora Cultural Centre is an 1886 heritage building that began its life as the Aurora Public School, also known as the Church Street School.

It has been transformed into a centre for the arts, culture and heritage.

The Aurora Museum is located on the second floor of the Cultural Centre. The inaugural exhibit is “A Legacy of Sport” which examines the long connection of sport to the Town of Aurora.

Aurora has a Trail System of approximately 48 kilometres designed to accommodate joggers, hikers and skiers.

Most trails are not maintained in the winter months.
