ClubClubLaurel Oak Country Club is a private,

member-owned club located in Sarasota,

Florida. Its outstanding facilities include

two championship golf courses crafted

by Gary Player. The older course has

been recently redesigned by Rees Jones,

the famed “U.S. Open Doctor”. The

club’s other amenities include 12 Har

Tru tennis courts, a full-size heated

swimming pool and a beautiful, newly

renovated 45,000 square foot clubhouse.

The club is nestled on over 800

peaceful acres near downtown Sarasota

with its renowned arts and cultural

district, and within easy reach of the

finest beaches in Florida. The club is

sited in a magnificent gated residential

community of over 400 single family

homes. However, because the club

enjoys such a widespread excellent

reputation, a majority of the membership

resides outside the community.

As soon as you enter Laurel Oak you realize that

you are in a special place. On the drive from the gate-

house to the Clubhouse, the landscape is stunning.

Passing between golf holes of one of our championship

courses, you note the lakes and ponds, often teeming

with wildlife. You can enter the 45,000 square foot

Clubhouse through one of three entryways. The circu-

lar drive leads to the private entry for the banquet facil-

ity. The main entry takes you past reception to either

the members’ lounge or the Garden Room, the superb

main dining facility overlooking the putting green, golf

course and lake. Golfers are met by clubhouse staff at

the entry to the golf shop and locker rooms, complete

with locker room attendant. The separate tennis and

pool center has its own entry and locker facilities. An

experienced and welcoming staff completes the envi-

ronment you have come to expect at this award win-

ning private golf course community.

A reason for the club’s success goes beyond the

outstanding golf courses, tennis facility and clubhouse

to a vibrant inclusive membership. As owners, each

of the members share in the Club’s commitment to a

continuous, financially responsible, improvement pro-

cess which ensures our direction always supports our

membership, not a corporate owner. The ambassador

program ensures new members are quickly integrated

into the Club and soon become equally committed to

the success of the Club. “We have been attracting many

families and active retirees because we are providing

excellent value right now.” said General Manager/

COO, Dave Whalen. “People can join for much less

than they think”. The adult membership spans all age

ranges from the 20s on up, and the club has families

with over 275 children. It is truly a family oriented

Club. The membership is a unique 50/50 mix of hom-

eowners and those who live in surrounding communi-

ties, downtown Sarasota, and the Keys. All members

regardless of residence have the same rights and use

privileges.

Two 18 hole golf courses and a limited member-

ship provide excellent availability and pace of play.

Both courses were originally designed by Gary Player,

with one redesigned by Rees Jones, the “US Open Doc-

tor”, in 2005. “Each course has its own unique style

and feel and you get a different experience each time

you play.” said Matt Auen, the Director of Golf. “Both

courses are always in impeccable condition.” From the

“tips”, they are the most challenging, two-course test

of golf in the Sarasota area. With 7 rated tees (four for

men and three for women) on both courses, there is

a distance and difficulty appropriate for any level of

golfer. You can view the course layouts on the club’s

website, www.laureloak.com. Two courses allow for at

least one to always be open, regardless of maintenance

or event schedules. There are many social and com-

petitive events for men, women and mixed, so if you

are looking for games, you will have no problem find-

ing groups to play with. For those interested in a round

with friends and family, or business entertainment, tee

times are always available for individual play. Walking,

at no fee, is allowed at any time with the approval of

the pro shop. Four full time golf professionals, and a

fifth in season, insure they can always help you keep

your game in shape.

The tennis facility is consistently ranked among

the best in Sarasota with 12 well maintained Har Tru

courts of which 8 are lighted. Members span the range

from beginners to USTA 4.5 ratings, so you can always

find games at your level of play. Clinics, leagues, tour-

naments and social play for men, women and mixed

are offered throughout the week, satisfying even the

most avid players. The bi-weekly Friday night mixers

under the lights followed by dinner at the club are a fa-

vorite of the members. Also a favorite are the monthly

professional exhibitions featuring local and nationally

known players. With three, full time tennis teaching

professionals on staff, there are plenty of opportunities

to improve your game.

With a choice of dining areas and menus, the pro-

fessional chefs prepare succulent lunches, dinners and

banquets for up to 350 people. The views of the golf

courses and lakes provide a scenic backdrop for dining

pleasure. Private parties and weddings are beautifully

themed and impeccably catered. Wednesday nights at

Laurel Oak are special. Reservations are “a must” be-

cause every table will be filled and the energy at the

two bars is electric. Each Friday evening features live

entertainment and each holiday is celebrated. Add the

numerous special events and members risk being par-

tied out! And to top it off, the year round reciprocal

arrangement with Bird Key Yacht Club offers a Down-

town as well as “Out East” dining and entertainment

option for the individual and business executive.

For a video tour of the Club and to view the course

layouts, please visit the website at www.laureloak.com.

Or better yet, experience Laurel Oak Country Club up

close and personal by scheduling a tour.

Coral Creek Club features a world class Tom Fazio designed golf course that is currently ranked in the top 30 golf courses in the State of Florida by Golf Digest. Coral Creek is the only golf course in the Boca Grande/Cape Haze area as well as in all of Charlotte, Lee and Sarasota counties ranked in the top 30. Mr. Fazio has designed Coral Creek in a core configuration with the limited residences on the perimeter of the golf course. Bordered by picturesque Coral Creek, a salt-water estuary flowing to the Gulf of Mexico and a 6,000-acre nature preserve, Coral Creek Club provides for a very special, private golf experience.

The impeccably maintained, 211-acre golf course rolls gently through southern pines, oaks and palms around deep blue lakes and picturesque, high flashing bunkers that guard emerald greens. Coral Creek Club offers water views over the mangroves on several golf holes, views that make the golf experience at Coral Creek unique among the best golf courses in Florida.

Mission Valley is a premier member owned, private country club in the Venice area of Sarasota County in SW Florida. Conveniently located between main high-ways, just minutes away from lovely gulf beaches and boating marinas, it is easy to find via our map and directions. Our club was established in 1967 and is not associated with home development. The golf course is set in a manicured, peaceful country setting with several lakes tastefully positioned to provide a scenic view with little potential as major water hazard threats. Accordingly, our challenging tree-lined, championship course was designed to be “walker friendly” without crossing roads and with the tee boxes located close to the previous green. The average round of golf is 4 hours or less. A convenient 3-tiered driving range, putting, chipping and sand practice areas are available with range balls provided. Reciprocity with over 20 private and semi-private clubs is provided from May to October. In addition to our excellent daily dining offerings, we host many weekly/monthly social, golfing and tennis events for our members. Mission Valley offers one of the best values of any private club in the area. Our Equity Membership has new incentives saving you over $4,000. And, the new and popular Seasonal Membership can be reserved for next season; offering the flexibility of 6 to 8 months. Membership at Mission Valley offers each person an opportunity to meet new people, make new friends and enjoy a quality golf, tennis and social experience. BY THE NUMBERS.A Good Season of Sales May be Forecasting Market Recovery

The past six months have provided several bright spots in the local market. Whether or not this leads to a strong 2011 remains to be seen, but all indications are that Sarasota / Bradenton is still very attractive to many Northerners planning for part of their future to be spent right here on the Suncoast.

The number of available properties in the Sarasota real estate market dropped to a six-year low in February 2011, and sales were up 24.2 percent from the previous month. Median sales prices for both single and condominiums dropped as bargain hunters continued to grab foreclosures and short sales, which represented almost 47 percent of all sales.

Compared to this time last year, sales were up 27 percent to 673 total sales, from February 2010’s total of 528 sales. There were 472 closings on single family homes and 201 closings on condos last month by members of the Sarasota MLS. In addition to the positive sales figures, pending sales also registered above the 1,000 level in February, with 1,023 total properties going under contract last month. In January 2011, 1,013 properties went under contract. This statistic is a strong indicator for the next two or three months of sales, as pending sales reflect current buyer activity.

Last February, pending sales reached 967. But that figure

was pushed upward by the approaching April 2010 deadline for the homebuyer tax credits. This year’s upward trend is being fueled by buyers of all sorts — investors, second-home buyers, and those who realize that today’s lower home prices coupled with low interest rates present buyers an opportunity not seen in years.

The most positive indicator of all is inventory level, which is the lowest in six years (5,864) and could mean upward pressure on sales prices moving forward, according to the higher sales totals combined with the lower inventory caused a sharp drop in the months of inventory to 8.0 months from 10.2 months in January 2011 for single family homes, and to 10.4 months from 14.1 months for condos. Only two years ago, in January 2009, there were 25.3 months of inventory for single family homes and 38.4 months of condo inventory. The market is considered to be in equilibrium between a buyers and sellers market once the figure reaches the 6 month level.

While statistics certainly present a favorable view of the market, sometimes what people are saying, “word of mouth”, provides and even stronger indication of what the future holds. Over the past few months, Play Golf Sarasota’s PGA professional concierge service has fielded several inquiries from vacationing golfers expressing interest in the market. Tony Panico, President of Concierge Services for Play Golf Sarasota states, “the great weather here this winter, coupled with the miserable conditions up north has really increased golf and travel activity for us. Many of the conversations we have with clients include them asking us about market conditions and options for golf villas, or beach condos for seasonal purposes.” Panico adds, “We give our clients the best golf vacation experience possible and it is not hard to fall in love with Sarasota. We see a bright future in helping golfers with transitioning to Sarasota as they consider where they are going to retire”.

Beautiful homes in golf course communities are moving quickly as values have stabilized.

SUNICE®: 2011 HURRICANE COLLECTIONThere’s a lot of buzz circulating around the corporate

headquarters of Canada’s leading outerwear brand, Sunice. It didn’t take long after the company was formed in 1976 for Sunice to become the leader in outerwear and they’ve grown that dominance through the years and Sunice is beginning to become a force in the United States as well.

Sunice has achieved this status because of its’ groundbreaking combination of science and style. It uses creative and innovative design, using durable construction and blend fashion-forward styling with the latest in technical specialty fabrics.

But while they continue to produce high-quality and innovative outerwear, the company has begun to forge relationships that not only create a great deal of buzz now but will definitely help the business model down the road.

“The big stories at Sunice are with relationships,” said Heidi Roswell, Marketing Director. “We’re doing the outwear for the United States team in the Solheim Cup and have come up with really hot stuff for them. Rosie (U.S. team captain Jones) came to Montreal, sat down and looked at the whole collection. I saw it recently and it is really, really good. We’re super-excited about this. We believe in our product and our relationships validate that.”

Solheim is also excited about the spinoff from the wardrobe malfunction suffered by the United States team in last fall’s Ryder Cup. That buzz does not come from the misfortune of the company that designed the outerwear for the U.S. team, but for the focus that was put on the technical part of outerwear construction.

“It’s exciting for us because people are talking about the technical aspects of outerwear,” Roswell said. “One

of our big things is educating the consumer about how this works. Technical outwear is a science.

Keeping out the water is a very exact science. How long and how will it stand up in extreme conditions?

“Our Hurricane category is the best in the industry and while we talk about the technical issues of the garment. But quality is such a given for us, it’s never an issue.”

Sunice highlights the Hurricane Collection in 2011 with exciting new Ultimate V3 Jacket being made even better. Its’ Gore-Tex Performance Shell is now even even lighter and quieter. It has the X-Static silver stretch lining (the only golf wear company to have that

technology, which helps regulate body temperature and odor control), Pro-Trim waist-cinching system, in-pocket ball cleaner and full stretch back panel.

Some exciting new colors and color combinations will come out in the fall like OC orange with charcoal; black cherry, as well as some vibrant brights.

Roswell said Sunice’s Polo Silver Collection of golf shirts will be coming to the United States this fall.

ANTIGUA’S SPRING/SUMMER APPARELBased on the success of Antigua’s newly introduced exclusive

DESERT DRY™ XTRA-LITE (D2XL) lightweight moisture management performance products Antigua expands its XTRA-LITE offering in an updated color palette with the launch of the company’s Spring/Summer 2011 collection. Antigua’s Desert Dry and Desert Dry Xtra-Lite garments are built to achieve maximum performance fit, form and all aspects of function

DESERT DRY™ XTRA-LITE (D2XL) combines Antigua’s exclusive DESERT DRY™ moisture-wicking feature with specially constructed ultra-light fabrics for maximum wicking performance and optimum comfort. The additional benefits of DESERT DRY™ XTRA LITE are:

• Moisture wicks more rapidly• Lighter weight on body• Less heat trapped on body• Less restrictive movement

Antigua’s new DESERT DRY™ XTRA-LITE is an extremely light fabric without being sheer. The three-dimensional construction is what makes the fabric extremely light without being see-through. Because the fabric has a lighter weight construction, DESERT DRY™ XTRA-LITE embellishes the wicking rate of Antigua’s proprietary DESERT DRY™ moisture management performance fabric. With its history of functional success, DESERT DRY™ already sits at the top of the market of performance golf apparel and with the added functionality of Antigua’s DESERT DRY™ XTRA-LITE fabric it is proving that it will join in that success

Antigua makes different weights of Desert Dry and makes it applicable in different product categories. In addition to using it in the men’s polos, Antigua also use it in men’s outerwear, primarily performance knits and fleeces from long sleeve base layers to 2nd layer thermal shells, both meant to keep you warm and since they’re worn starting from a little closer to the body and transfer to the second layer the Desert Dry wicking feature becomes imperative

Antigua is taking its high-performance collection in a new direction for Spring/Summer 2011. Taking its lead from the ever-evolving fashion market Antigua steps out—and by introducing what the company has coined “contemporary performance” with the Mosaic, Mogul and Metropolitan collections.

“The last few years have been tough for the golf business in general, but we’re seeing some nice distribution growth including a nice resurgence in volume,” says Ron McPherson, President and CEO of Antigua. “Our design team is constantly adapting to hit the trends and our trade partners have embraced DESERT DRY™ and DESERT DRY™ XTRA-LITE as they continue outperforming as a function of the product and with their viability as strong performers at retail”

The only golf facility located within the city limits of beautiful Sarasota, a golfing mecca nestled on the Gulf of Mexico coast just one hour south of Tampa, Florida. The facility sits on 325 contiguous acres of virgin meadowland adjacent to State Road 780, Fruitville Road, the gateway to downtown Sarasota and its world famous beaches. This historic gem, initially designed by Donald Ross in 1926, has grown to include two 18-hole championship courses and a 9-hole executive course. Calusa Lakes’ beautiful wooded terrain highlights the natural setting of this outstand-ing 18-hole presentation. The spacious course weaves its way through a variety of pine forests and live oak-covered lake banks lending a rare mid-Atlantic feel to the course. A player-friendly course with rolling fairways, fair landing areas, no forced carries and large greens offer the players a unique and enjoyable golfing experience.

Capri Isles is one of the oldest semi-private golf courses in Venice. Located just off I-75 (Exit 193) near the heart of the City of Venice, Capri is perfectly situated for everyone staying in the Sarasota area.

This par 72 “links” style golf course was rebuilt in 2003 with the new greens, fairways, and tees. There are 4 sets of tees allowing the novice or pro golfer a fair test of golf.

This “parkland” 27 hole golf course is situated off of exit 195 on I-75 not far from the beaches, Sarasota, and Port Charlotte. Three distinct “nines” meander through trees and over water features. The rolling fairways and undulating greens, provide the player a variety of playing strategies while testing their shot making skills. Where some courses have one signature hole, this club has many.

BUNKERS – A GUARANTEED OUT! Wasting shots in the sand?! Thought so!....................

So many people take too many shots to get out of a bunker and have little confidence. The major problem being that they do not understand that you should not ‘dig or chop’ down on the ball. This action gets the club to ‘bury’ coming in and either you fluff the ball and do not get it out or you compensate and ‘thin’ it over the green!

Try this sure way to get out. Stand really wide and lean towards the hole slightly. Lock your arms in a “V’ shape. Simply make a turn with your hips keeping your arms ‘locked’ in a V

shape. If you start at 6 oclock, lets say. You need to just make the club go back to 9 and through to 3, halfway back and through effectively. This will create a ‘U’ shaped swing, which will allow the club to ‘skid’ not dig. The ball will pop out each and every time if you do it correctly. As you get more confident do the same thing and add a tiny bit of wrist hinge on either side to hit it further and higher.

Imagine how many shots you could save if you could get it out every time and even spin it!?

Southwestern Chapter of the North Florida PGA presents the 2011 BIRDIE-A-THON Fundraisers

BIRDIE-A-THON events are hosted at clubs and courses by the local PGA Professionals throughout Sarasota/Manatee/Charlotte counties in an effort to raise money for local Jr. Golf programs and other worthwhile charities. Proceeds in 2010 went to The Greater Sarasota Junior Golf Association, The First Tee of Sarasota Manatee, Make-A-Wish Foundation, Boys and Girls Club, Big Brothers/Big Sisters and The Upside Down Foundation. The Southwestern Chapter donated over $40,000 in 2010 and the goal is to increase that number in 2011 by at least $10,000. In all, the Chapter has donated more than $250,000 to local charities over the past eight years. Scott Lamoureaux, Marketing Chairman for the Chapter, says “I will be contacting each club in our chapter to discuss dates and ideas to host a Birdie-A-Thon”. Please enquire with your local PGA Professional for future events over the summer. The Selective Functional Movemetnt Assessment (SFMA)7 full-body movement tests designed to assess fundamental patterns of movementby Dr. Ken Kaufman, Chiropractorwww.DrKenKaufman.com

Dr. Ken is working on the top 3

problems and solutions common

to golfers.

The SFMA is a series of 7 full-

body movement tests designed

to assess fundamental patters of

movement such as bending and

squatting in individuals with known

musculoskeletal pain. Due to the

unique nature of the assessment,

the SFMA can reveal much great-

er detail about both chronic and

acute injuries. Different than the

regular non-moving examination

offered by most other clinicians,

the assessment looks at entire

movement patterns that often re-

veal impairments that may seem unrelated to

a particular condition. However, these impair-

ments certainly contribute to the condition and

often are signs of long term compensation the

body has developed over time.

The findings of the SFMA along with other

standard tests allow for a very individualized

rehabilitation program design. As opposed to

cookie cutter treatment based only on the pain

you are experiencing, the SFMA can guide us

to design exercise rehabilitation and therapy

based on the actual cause of your condition.

This results in greater success and a true resolu-

tion to your problem not just a temporary fix.

If you have been experiencing a chronic

problem or a physical limitation that affects

your chosen sport, then a SFMA may help re-

veal the true underlying cause of your cond-

tion. Even if your condition seems to respond

to other therapy such as; chiropractic adjust-

ments, massage, acupuncture, stretching and

other body work, but continues to reoccur, then

the SFMA may be the ticket to truly uncover

the underlying imbalances, mobility limitations

and/or stability issues that, if identified, can be

addressed and corrected. Remember to warm

up first, wear sun screen and drink lots of water,

because it never rains on the golf course!

Considering Patterns of Movement

Normal movement is achieved through the integration of fundamental movement patterns with an adequate balance of mobility and stability to meet the demands of the task at hand.

The human system will migrate toward predictable patterns of movement in response to pain or in the presence of weakness, tightness, or structural abnormality. Over time, these pain-attenuated movement patterns lead to protective movement and fear of movement, resulting in clinically observed impairments such as decreased ROM, muscle length changes, and declines in strength. An isolated or regional approach to either evaluation or treatment will not restore whole function. Functional restoration requires a working knowledge of functional patterns and a map of dysfunctional patterns to gain clinical perspective and design an effective treatment strategy.

Pain-free functional movement for participation in occupation and lifestyle activities is desirable. Many components comprise pain-free functional movement including adequate posture, ROM, muscle performance, motor control, and balance reactions. Impairments of each component could potentially alter functional movement resulting in or as a consequence of pain. Utilizing the SFMA, the clinician is able to identify key functional movement patterns and describe the critical points of assessment needed to efficiently restore functional movement. This approach is designed to complement the clinician’s existing exam and intervention model with the prescription of movement based therapeutic exercise.

The SFMA serves to efficiently integrate the concepts of posture, muscle balance and the fundamental patterns of the movement system into musculoskeletal practice. Additionally, it provides feedback for the effectiveness of the therapeutic exercise program, which targets the dysfunctional movement pattern and related impairments.

Stressed, Tense, Overworked? You Need a Massage

Playing golf is hard on your muscles and joints. Over time, the muscles can become fatigued, stressed, and prone to injury. Many shoulder, hip, and back injuries have been suffered by players unwilling to recognize the warning signs their body is sending. Stiffness, twinge-like pains, overall aches masked by ibuprofen. Incorporating good massage therapy into your life and game will provide your body the ability to recover faster after a round. Kitty provides wonderful care to her clients.

As our logo says, we are “dedicated to life.”

There is one primary diagnosis we address here - prostate cancer, both at first diagnosis and as a recurrent disease.

However, the technology we have amassed is also appropriate for treating other tumors where motion during radiation is a major concern. This is especially the case with lung cancers. On a select basis, we have applied the DART technology for treatment of lung tumors with tremendous success with tumor eradication and markedly reduced side effects since virtually all normal surrounding lung tissue is spared......only possible through our numerous motion based technologies

Our hallmark is non-surgical combination therapy that has resulted in the best long-term cure rate in the world.

Foot Orthotics for Golf: Preventing Pain, Improving Game

For the foot that is not able to function normally due to biomechanical condi-tions such as excessive pronation (rolling in) or supination (rolling out), a state of optimal biomechanics can be achieved through the use of custom orthoses, cus-tom shoe inserts that can be prescribed by a podiatrist. Orthoses not only allow the feet to function as they ought to but can alleviate the predisposition to injury brought on by biomechanical imbalances.

If you already wear orthoses in your street shoes, by all means transfer them to your golf shoes. If you play golf on a regular basis, you may want to invest in a pair of golf orthotics – orthotics pre-scribed specifically for the biomechanics of golf. For optimum control, the unusual function of the feet in golf shoes calls for different orthotic function then might be seen for walking or running.

How Can Acupuncture Help Me?

Acupuncture provides pain relief for many kinds of chronic pain. Back pain, headache, and whiplash from car accidents respond well to acupunc-ture treatment. Sprains or strains from sports injuries can be treated. Acu-puncture reduces the pain of repetitive stress injury, which affects many people working with keyboards or musical in-struments. Painful migraines, cluster headaches, and tension headaches can be treated with acupuncture. Painful joints from arthritis can be greatly re-lieved.

Symptoms of stress also respond very well to acupuncture care. Anxiety, de-pression, and insomnia are relieved, providing support for people going through a hard time, or anyone suf-fering from a busy life. The deep state of relaxation you experience during treatment begins to relieve anxiety and stress from the very first session.

‘Start the year off right. Instead of setting goals that might be daunting or unrealistic, consider a series of mini-goals. How about giving up sweets for 2 weeks? No white flour for 5 days? Cut down from two glasses of wine to one each night? How about exercising for 15 extra minutes each week for a month?

Or, how about making an appoint-ment to see a dietitian to help you set the perfect goals for you? Together we can look at what you are doing now and figure out reasonable ways to transform your health with no suffer-ing. In order to be successful in making changes, you need to understand why you are doing what you are doing, and then you need to find ways to truly en-joy living with the new plan. You can do it! It is the perfect time of year for a fresh start.’
