A book on motivation offers a new theory on basic drives in humans: Driven: How Human Nature Shapes Our Choices, by Paul R. Lawrence and Nitin Nohria (Jossey Bass, 2001). These two Harvard Business School professors draw evidence for their four-drive theory from evolutionary psychology and Darwin as well as from the social sciences and business.

Human beings are driven to seek ways to fulfil all four drives because these drives are the product of the species’ common evolutionary heritage: they increase the ability of our genes to survive. They make a good case for the following basic drives:

• The drive to acquire objects and experiences that improve our status relative to others.

• The drive to bond with others in long-term relationships of mutual care and commitment.

• The drive to learn and to make sense of the world and of ourselves.

• The drive to defend ourselves, our loved ones, our beliefs, and our re-sources from harm.>

We used to be connected by six degrees of separation now it is six pixels of separation; Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Skype, Flickr, You Tube. These are all necessary means of being connected.

The most evidential example of how social media has changed the way in which we communicate is the role it played in our response to natural dis-asters. Social media and the internet enable the whole World to be kept up-dated as all the action happens. We are no longer just exposed to the media’s ‘point of view’ or the governments so called ‘version of events’, we are now given the facts, the truth the real life accounts from everyday people experiencing the unimaginable.

Social media has not just changed the mediums in which we receive com-munication but more so the type of stories we receive and the sources in which they originated. You no longer have to be a journalist or a TV presenter to be heard you know longer have to be a photographer or videographer to be seen, just about anyone can have a voice and be heard.

During natural disasters such as Haiti, Cyclone Yasi, The Queensland Floods, Hurricane Catrina, and political disasters such as the collapse of the Span-ish and Greek economies and the overthrow of the Egyptian government,>

we got to hear about the real life events, the voice of the people who are experiencing the unimaginable. As they share with us the atrocity of what has happened to them, our level of empathy increases. This makes us more eager to do something and get organised to help, the process of which is accelerated by social media and technology tools.

Not only people have spontaneously created groups on Facebook to talk about their experiences and direct users willing to donate to chari-ties going there, but charities themselves have been very prompt to set up a response online to enable faster response times and increased donations.

Social Media played a crucial role in repairing the damage following the recent natural disasters from co-ordinating relief aid, gathering dona-tions, connecting missing people and rebuilding homes and towns.

However for the Egyptian government social media had an adverse ef-fect as it was the main line of communication used by Egyptians to co-ordinate protest and gather momentum to overthrow the government, so much so that Egyptian government shut-off the internet access.

everything.

At least a tattoo can be removed your digital fingerprint is almost impossible to erase, so be very careful about what you say and what you share in socila media.

When communicating in cyberspace there are often misunderstandings because there are no visual cues.

Visual cues account for 55% of all communication so when the visual cues are absent we need to be far more careful about our use of words and grammar as it can easily be misinterpreted.

Unfortunately in cyber space our visual cues are most often limited to a set of smileys, the WYSIWYG editor and the CAPS LOCK button our keyboard.

So it is no surprise how easily it is to misinterpret what you read especially when you are limited to 140 characters and abbreviations such as WDALYIC, WAM-BAM, WABOC, TIC, TIA and TLGO aka The List Goes On.

Mark Zuckerberg wrote Facemash, the predecessor to Facebook, on October 28, 2003, while attending Harvard as a sophomore. Accord-ing to The Harvard Crimson, the site was comparable to Hot or Not, and used photos compiled from the online facebooks of nine houses, placing two next to each other at a time and asking users to choose the ‘hotter’ person.

Facebook is a social networking service and website launched in Febru-ary 2004, operated and privately owned by Facebook, Inc. As of July 2011, Facebook has more than 750 million active users. It has grown to a social media phenomenon and is fast becoming an essential business tool.

Facebook allows you to not only build a personal profile and express yourself but also build fan pages that people can ‘like’ for your busi-ness, brand or just topic of interest.

Online games have grown to become very powerful and an incredible mar-keting tool. The growth in online games has been largely facilitated by social media phenomena Facebook. Facebook has enabled games to become more personal and integrated amongst peers.

Facebook launched game ‘Farmville’ has a massive 80,000,000 users. It is the Worlds most popular social networking games and is an clone to the not so popular game Farm Town. It is the most popular on Facebook with over 10% of users playing the game. Gameplay involving various aspects of farm manage-ment such as ploughing land, planting, growing and harvesting crops, harvest-ing trees and bushes, and by raising livestock.

The game Farmville is so popular that if the developers Zynga sent out a mes-sage telling all 80,000,000 game players to feed the crops or they will die, the activity would shut down the internet. Now that’s power!

ES Another great example of the power of games is Evoke, this masterful

game is advertised as a “ten-week crash course in saving the World.” It was developed by the World Bank Institute, the learning and knowl-edge arm of the World Bank Group, and directed by alternate reality game master Jane McGonigal.

Played by 20,000 people across 130 countries it is free to play and open to anyone, anywhere. The goal of the social network game is to help empower people all over the world to come up with creative solutions to our most urgent social problems. I recommend you challenge yourself for 10 weeks and give the game a go www.urgentevoke.com.

Online games appear to be emerging across all realms of social be-haviours not just those wanting to save the World and manage their own farms. Dr Renae Beaumont created a spy game that teaches kids with aspergers how to interact socially, the Secret Agent Society is built around solving the mysteries of social encounters and is targeted at those aged 8-12 years.

Another game in the kids education department is Cyber Wellness cre-ated by Huelab. The game is similar to the popular Sims game and help kids understand how to be cyber safe and cyber smart.

Taking the ability to learn through online games to another division are the Marriot Hotel who have recently introduced a game on Facebook as a recruitment tool. Educating users on how to perform well in different areas of hotel management.

The last thing you want to do is fall behind in technology and cyberspace mediums. They are essential to business and how we operate in modern society.

Last year I took a massive leap into the new generation of Cyberspace as I launched Play A Bigger Game. With a new website that is connected through all realms of social media www.playabiggergame.com.au providing motivational articles, stories, games and resources at an instant to thousands of team players.

Most importantly I released my first book, this book isn’t just any book it is the book of the future. Not wanting to distract from the awesome content and sole focus of the book I used technology to add an extra dimension to the books offering, communicating with people in a way your average book can’t.

My book is all about helping People Achieve More, Be More, Do More Have More than they ever thought possible. Knowing that words aren’t always the most effective way to motivate individuals I embedded videos and resources at the end of every chapter through the use of QR CODES.

Page 23: Play A Bigger Game In Cyber Space

QR CODESQR Code stands for Quick Response Code. It is a mobile phone readable barcode. Some mobile phones come equipped with QR code others require you to download a QR reader app.

The easiest way to test if your phone has a pre-installed QR code is to point your phone’s camera over the QR code. If the device has had QR Code decoding software installed it will fire up its browser and go straight to that URL. If not, just simply download any QR reader onto your phone and then point the phone’s camera over the barcode.

My book released April 2011 was the first in Australia to feature chapter QR codes. The videos at the end of each chapter not only add further dimensions to the points I am getting across but also engage with the reader on a different level. It adds my professional perspective to the topic delivered personally via video, and further connects with the reader to build rapport and more effective communication.

My book not only features QR codes linked to vidoes but also QR codes attached to an accountability program, so once you have read the book and learnt how to Play A bigger Game you can put your plans straight into action through our Free 90 Day Accountability Program. If you interested you can view a sneak peak of my book here www.playabiggergame.com.au/

resources/buy-the-book.

QR codes aren’t just a feature in my book they are popping up every-where, in Europe they are featured on food packaging so you can learn more about the products, its nutritional contents and the ingredients. They are on DVD boxes linked to movie trailers, posters linked to adverts and business card linked to contact information.

Page 25: Play A Bigger Game In Cyber Space

Companies in the US & Japan now places QR codes on gravestones so you can quickly access the deceased’s photos and hear their voices all on your smart phone. You can also leave messages and record stories for others who visit.

Here are my six hey ideas on how to Play A Bigger Game in Cyber Space:

1. It used to be don’t say anything on the phone you don’t want printed in the paper now “don’t say anything online you don’t want the world to know about”

2. Have a clear set of policies that outline acceptable use and the conse-quences of unacceptable use and when the rules are broken be sure to act.

3. Educate yourselves, your team, your organisation, your students and your parents on social media the uses and misuses.

4. Start a blog, have a Facebook page create a linked profile. You need to have a voice if people cannot find you in cyberspace you may not exist.

5. Play their game, use social media as an education and communication tool make it work to your advantage. When misuse occurs get students involved in actively discouraging the culprits.

6. Start long before you think you need to cyberspace evolves daily you can quickly become a dinosaur in fact start now.

Page 27: Play A Bigger Game In Cyber Space

This generation adapts to Cyberspace superfast. Kids in kindergarten are using iPads to Skype their friends. Apple have a program in place where-by they offer for $500 per child per year, they will furnish every child with an iPad, wi-fi the system, provide all the books on the system, all the upgrades, all the teacher training, and the results they’re getting from these kids is phenomenal!

CYBERBULLYCyberbully follows Taylor Hillridge (Emily Osment), a teenage girl who falls victim to online bullying, and the cost it takes on her as well as her friends and family. Taylor is a pretty seventeen-year-old student deal-ing with her parents’ recent divorce and painfully aware of her lower social status in high school.

When her mom gives her a computer for her birthday, Taylor is excited by the pros-pect of going online to meet new friends without her mother always looking over her shoulder. However, Taylor soon finds herself the victim of betrayal and bullying while visiting a popular social website.

Obsessed with the damaging posts, she begins to withdraw from her family and friends, including her life-long best friend, Samantha Caldone (Kay Panabaker). Tormented and afraid to face her peers at school, Taylor is pushed to an extreme breaking point.

It is only after this life-changing event that Taylor learns that she is not alone meeting other teens, including a classmate, who have had similar experiences. Taylor’s mom, Kris (Kelly Rowan), reels from the incident and takes on the school system and state legislation to help prevent others from going through the same harrowing ordeal as her daughter.
