For this 7V7 release a great !eal of effort %ent into effecting a !rastic rene%al of 'oth the vi!eo an!

au!io of the Neon Genesis Evangelion TV series.

The focus of the rene%al plan for the au!io %as 'uil!ing 5.( soun!. The soun! for the Evangelion TV

series %as pro!uce! in 8. stereo. For this rene%al, rather than choosing to use speciali/e! soft%are to

mechanicall& split the 8. stereo soun! into 5.( au!io, the three elements that make up the soun!

!ialogue, music, an! soun! effects, %ere each remappe! for ever& episo!e. This %ork require! a

tremen!ous amount of time an! in fact took almost half a &ear to complete. 6ome of the a!!itional

recor!e! !ialogue is material that %as intentionall& left off the 8. stereo recor!ing, even though

7irector )nno originall& planne! for it %hen the sho% %as 'eing pro!uce!, 'ecause it %as surmise! that

inclu!ing those lines %oul! 'e information overloa!, making ever&thing har!er to hear. $n other cases,

there %as !ialogue a!!e! to tighten up certain areas that ha! too little information in terms of the

au!io. 6pecificall& speaking, the ma:orit& of these lines are reports an! announcements from the 14V

staff at the comman! center. Others inclu!e 'ackgroun! cro%! noise in school scenes an!announcements at train stations. Of the cast mem'ers %ho participate! in the a!!itional recor!ings, the

onl& original cast mem'er is ;egumi *a&ashi'ara. )n! her part %as to pla& the super computer, ;)2$,

not 4ei )&anami. $n other %or!s, of the characters %ith names, the onl& one to have a!!itional !ialogue

%as the ;)2$.

The fun!amental concept 'ehin! the soun! rene%al %as to respect the original. With regar!s to musical

What metho!s to use to remaster the footage for this 7V7 release )ppro<imatel& si< months %ere spent

reaching a !ecision in ans%er to this question. For the telecine process of transferring the vangelion TV

series from the original negatives, %hich %ere pro!uce! in (=mm film, a metho! calle! %et gate

telecine %as chosen instea! of !r& gate telecine, %hich is the current mainstream metho!. This metho!

%as chosen, 'ecause the priorit& %as place! on efficientl& removing scratches on the film, minimi/ing

the shaking of the image %hen the (=mm film is run through telecine, an! on the overall improvement in

qualit& rather than improving the sharpness of !etails. Pin registration %as use! to re!uce the shaking of

the image, %hich occurs !ue to this 'eing a film pro!uct. B& firml& sta'ili/ing the film, the shaking %as

visi'l& re!uce! for all to see. On the other han!, the TV opening an! en!ing are on >5mm film, %hich

are clear an! of high resolution, unlike the TV episo!es. Thus, the priorit& %as to 'ring out the colors,

an! the !r& gate telecine metho! %as use!. Furthermore, the recor!ing %as !one in *7 ?high !efinition@.

1o%, concerning some of the scenes in piso!e 6i<teen an! the previe%s, the original (=mm negatives

ha! 'ecome lost from the !evelopment la'orator& in the past. Thus, the telecine process %as !one from

a >5mm internegatlve, 'ut through last spurt color %ork through color correction an! !igital

remastering, the footage has 'een repro!uce! to appro<imate the original.

The technological a!vances in !igital correction also pro!uce! great results in !ealing %ith !irt an!

scratches in the footage. The traces of the a!hesive use! to connect the cuts that appear in film %orks

have also 'een erase! from ever& frame. This process also require! a great !eal of %ork, 'ut the images

have 'een tightene! up overall an! appear much clearer no%. $n a!!ition, '& having erase! the trace of

a!hesives, it also 'ecame possi'le to repro!uce the entire frame. 4etakes %ere also !one to fi< painting

mistakes an! to a!! !etails. ) lot of the fi<es %ere !one !igitall&, 'ut there are some scenes %hich %ere
