VEGA HOUSE

The project is developed within a main block that

handles different textures and projections that play with

its own geometrical shape. Within this block we contain fam-

ily activities defined in each level, but clearly differentiated in

public, private, and service area.

Taking advatange of the spectacular view that the property

has, the scheme opens views towards a natural reservoir

and the surrounding patios, the main garden along the east

facade, the deck facing the open view and the private patio,

that encloses a tree in an almost japanese scenario. Out-

doors embracing the house in every direction.

Inner space was important as well as the outerspace,

therefore we managed to design a double heighted room

in the lowerfloor to conect with the upperfloor having the

perception of a more open space within the house and with a

window that slices the ceiling opening views to the sky.

With a very clear zoning of the different levels and activities,

we were able to take maximum advantage of space, having

the less square meters to build and finding the best and

optimal use of them according to the family needs.

The concept for this project was to design a commercial

node that could be able to have a functional logic and a

clear aesthetic and at the same time to be a building of easy

lecture of its components.

The complex stands out clearly open to the adjacent street,

promoting pedestrian accesibility to the complex. The L

configuration accentuates the views towards the city while a

central pivot of vertical circulation is able to attend 30 com-

mercial spots in two stories.

Structure is exposed, painted in dark brown and covered

with glass and travertine marble extruded cubes to give

some volume to the facades. With this contrast of color and

material the project offers a clear statement in this kind of

buildings in the city.

The proposal for this project takes place into a very

sloped site with very difficult and tricky conditions for

the construction process in the one hand but great views on

the other hand.

We decided to design a structural system that could be able

to hold the entire object and to rise from the bottom of the

site from only one structural point.

The result of this analysis led us to manage a continuous

folded slab that rises unfolding itself upon the site. The sys-

tem will open views to the magnificent natural scenario on

the south and will protect the house on its west facade, hav-

ing a terrace on the roof, a space for the cars at the entrance

and interesting spaces between the site and the almost float-

ing spaces as a result of the unfolding and folding element.

Page 9: PLATAFORMA

“The fold is a generative process of form.

Forms unfold its possibilities being part of

the program, in situ, according to natural

conditions, budget, etc. Spaces appeared

upon the volume. Composition is substitut-

ed. The composition is replaced with a back

a forth process between the un-folding and

folding.”

METROPOLITAN THEATER

In 2006 the Government of the City of Queretaro open a

competition for a new project, the City of the Arts. We

entered this competition with a proposal for the New Metro-

politan Theater competing with the most prominent mexican

architects, Legorreta, Norten, Gonzalez, Migdal, Moyao, and

a local firm in collaboration with Pei. We ended up in the 4th

place. A great experience for a local young firm. The project

for this theater included the collaboration of several experts

in differents fields. The proposal was a building with two

main volumes, the theater itself and the entrance hall. The

two volumes were divided by huge walls. The building hall

was proposed to be elevated and open towards the city, a

light roof supported by a “vortex” column are the main char-

acters at the entrance of this magnificent space.

The project was conceived from the will of building a

space of multiple relationships between interior and

exterior, maintaining the intimacy of two design studios.

The program is defined by the spatial needs of an architec-

ture studio and a graphic design studio that are currently

working together to achieve a multi-disciplinary environment

that could be able to show a solid corporative presence.

In this aim, the two studios worked together to produce an

object in which to experiment graphic design and the built

realm, the result was two blind clusters surrounding a central

yard to provide natural light all day long, open to east facade

but protected at the same time with a screen of punched

metal sheets in order to provide different levels of illumina-

tion for the work spaces within. Graphic details and ceiling

patterns like a tattoo on the concrete slab and several other

vinyl applications on the walls and furniture, designed by the

graphic design studio or other fellow designers around the

world, enriches the space and the architectural experience.

The existing building had structural failure therefore the

school board decided to launch a restricted competition to

design the new building for the middle school of the JFK

American School. We obtained the 1st place and the building

is being constructed.

The new project dettach itself from the ground by elevate

and open the first floor to allow pedestrian flows through

the building and to serve as a meeting point among middle

school, elementary and high school.

The program is divided en three levels that communicate

themselves through a central courtyard that provides light

and ventilation.

Along with the central courtyard is the cantilivered south

body that offers a semi-open area for recreational events

underneath it.

One of the most important elements is the main access

ramp. Located at the west facade, is located right in the main

axis of the school, giving character to the new building an

providing a great view to anyone who enter the school.

The facade system is the solution that answers the needs

of each orientation and the personality of the building. The

southeast facade has a parametric texture that is the result

of the sunlighting needs on that side of the building. The

west facade protects the building with a green wall that

moisturizes the inner ambience of some areas. North and

east facades close themselves to the views.

The project is located in the main street of a residential

complex on top of a mountain. The lot has a very particular

feature: it was divided by the neighbors while the lot was

empty, creating a temporary street that cut the lot in two

equal parts.

The concept was to connect the two halves of the lot elevat-

ing a long cluster of apartments as a bridge over the tem-

porary street. This gesture allows the neighbors to continue

passing through the site maintaining the collective memory

of the site.

The program was 15 lofts with amenities in three levels

while the ground floor serves as parking lot and commercial

space.

Apartments connect inner spaces through different levels,

while facing south and north facades to front and rear views.

The street facade displays a blue texture to provide several

tones, shades and reflections to interior and the public space

as well. Sustainable features such as solar pannels and eolic

systems were proposed for the complex.1

The master plan proposes a policentre, where the public

activities are done somehow back again in the area,

creating a sense of neighborhood, giving life back to such

activities as commerce and services in the same zone. The

moderate density in the micro urban centre can work as an

type/example scheme that is able to adapt to different kind

of centers with similar characteristics in diverse urban ratios

that vary from block centers to the capacity of spreading all

across the city, with reaction such as the viral replication.

Instead of an urban plan itself, the proposal is based around

a student villa, where the buildings and the architectural

program grows and develops according to their inhabitants.

One day a student building, then that student becomes a

professional with a small company, then that student forms a

family and so on in a very common circle of life.

The proposed villa is an organism that as the same as its

users and inhabitants is able to develop 24 hours a day, 365

days a year. The functions and uses of the project change

accordingly to the users and events happening in the public

space being this the vital space of the project.

Activities and flows continue changing in horizontal and

vertical ways constantly. The topography in ground level

develops depressions and textures that integrate to walls and

buildings.

Page 29: PLATAFORMA

The projects began with the

analysis of the probable dynamic

flows in the intervened zone. The

location is highly dense in terms of

population, the buildings surround-

ing the empty lots are high in its

north and northwest, but not in

southwest. This fact determines in

an imperative sense the way the

sun and temperature affect the

zone. The empty lots generate a

grand interconnected space but

divided through a secondary street.

After an extensive mapping of the

dynamic conditions of the place,

pedestrian and vehicular flows de-

termined the visual and functional

connections of the space.

ARCHITECTURE BIENNALE ROTTERDAM

The theme of the first International Architecture Biennale

of Rotterdam was Mobility as it relates to the city and the

landscape, and the design culture that comes with it.

The school of architecture of ITESM was invited to participate

in this event with the project Mexico Avenue. I was invited

to be part of one of the teams to develop a segment of the

main project the analysis of a section of the avenue, starting

from the Zocalo in Mexico City to Los Arcos the most popular

landmark in Queretaro. Our node was the intersection of

the avenues Viaducto and Cuauhtemoc, primary streets in

Mexico City. The location offered an ondulated topography

that we explored and analized through the study of dynamic

and static conditions in the area and its surroundings. This

approach did not deliver formal results but a strong group

of conditions that has direct influence in the morphology of

the immediate surroundings. An urban system based on the

mutations along the route.

As a result of the preliminar analysis, the proposal consists

on an elevated module that combines static and dynamic

conditions redefining the urban realm of the area and

transforming it into a filter for public transport, pedestrians,

vehicles and so on. Opening views and trasnforming itself

into an interactive border that flows in different nodes along

the route, showing images in an ever changing led skin of

information.

PUNTA PÁJAROS

The project is located in front of a green area right in the

heart of a private cluster. The small format project aims to

give back the sense of community to this neighborhood,

opening plot boundaries and views towards the open areas.

Public areas within the house live to the exterior through

floor to ceiling windows, while the private and service areas

are enclosed completely to the inside. There will be three

identical units floating in the plot.

The black volume elevates its foundations from the ground,

giving the sense of lightness. The main façade opens

completely to 3000m2 of green areas. The roof slab elevates

itself to control daylight to certain areas. The projects is

solved in just one story, but there is a playful management of

heights in the inside that emphisize de sense of horizontality

giving spatial continuity.

HOTEL BOUTIQUE OCAMPO 17

Located into a world heritage city, this project aims to give a

contemporary retreat in the heart of a colonial city in a 19th

century old house. Conservation was very important for this

project. Original elements, as floor tiles, trees, wall textures,

and so on gave us the perfect design strategy to maintain the

spirit of the house. Original tiles design were the perfect ele-

ment to work on iron fences, metalsheet screenings, lighting

details and some other elements along the hotel. The most

important element in the house is the backyard garden that

houses a big jacaranda tree, the guardian of the house with

its purple flowers coloring the air.

A new addition of two new rooms to the original cluster is

covered with uglass, giving the sense or artificiality among

natural elements. The inner courtyard acts more like an

installation of dynamic glowing boxes that seems to be mov-

ing along the day, you never found the elements in the same

position when you come back to the hotel.
