Plastic Surgery Rotation The following goals and objectives are intended to inform each EM resident of what you should gain from your educational experience during the Plastic Surgery Rotation, both clinical and didactic. These goals and objectives are also intended to assist you in achieving competencies appropriate for the EM resident. They can be achieved through customary methods including the fulfillment of supervised clinical assignments, attendance and participation in didactic activities, and study. Patient Care

• Develop ability to correctly perform a history and physical in patients with hand disorders due to infection or trauma and complex facial lacerations

• Demonstrate ability to order and interpret radiographs in patients with hand injuries and facial trauma

• Demonstrate understanding of the anatomy, mechanism of injury, presentations, complications, management and prognosis of common hand disorders due to infection or trauma and facial trauma

• Demonstrate knowledge of standard Plastic Surgery nomenclature • Demonstrate knowledge of appropriate aftercare and rehabilitation of hand injuries,

infections or facial trauma • Demonstrate knowledge of the differences in pediatric and adult hand and face skeletal

anatomy, and indicate how those differences are manifest in clinical and radiographic presentations

• Demonstrate ability to apply hand devices, including compressive dressings, splints and immobilizer

• Demonstrate skill in performance of the following procedures: immobilization of hand fractures, reduction of hand dislocations, extensor tendon repair, nail bed injury repair, management of lacerations to the face and hands, incision and drainage of abscesses including paronychia and felons

• Demonstrate ability to prioritize and manage the treatment of hand and face injuries in multiple trauma patients

• Describe the presentation, complications, diagnosis and management of compartment syndromes

• Discuss the dosages, indications, contraindications and side effects of standard analgesic and sedative agents used to treat patients with acute hand or face trauma and demonstrate skills in their use

• Describe how to evaluate and preserve amputated limb parts • Describe the criteria for determination of limb viability, and indications for surgical

amputation • Demonstrate appropriate evaluation and treatment of joint injuries, penetrating soft tissue

injuries, crush injuries, and high pressure injection injuries to the hand, wrist or forearm • Demonstrate the ability to determine who needs urgent Plastic Surgery consultation in

the ED versus stabilization and outpatient follow-up Medical Knowledge

• Learn pertinent anatomy and biomechanics of the hand and face • Learn to perform a history and physical examination for patients with hand infections,

injuries or facial trauma • Learn use of the diagnostic imaging modalities available for the evaluation of hand and

face injuries • Develop skill in the evaluation and management of hand injuries, infections and facial

trauma

• Develop skill in the diagnosis and treatment of inflammatory and infectious disorders of the hand

• Learn principles of acute and chronic pain management in patients with hand infections, injuries and facial trauma

Practice - Based Learning and Improvement

• Demonstrate evidence-based decision-making • Show appropriate use of educational resources • Effectively utilize senior residents, fellows, faculty and other Plastic Surgery staff that

supervise during this rotation for education and optimizing patient care • Review and discuss current literature as appropriate to patient care

Interpersonal and Communication Skills

• Demonstrate effective information exchange with patients and their families • Communicate the treatment plan to supervising and consulting physicians • Communicate effectively and listen to other members of the health care team • Answer questions and provide information in a clear and respectful manner • Convey respect for others and display an appropriate degree of confidence

Professionalism

• Apply appropriate ethical practice to patient care • Maintain patient privacy and confidentiality • Demonstrate sensitivity and responsiveness to the culture, age, gender and disabilities of

patients and their caregivers / family • Arrive on time and complete assigned duties

Systems - Based Practice

• Understand basic resources available for care of the patient in the Plastic Surgery Service setting

• Utilize the consultation process appropriately • Practice cost-effective health care delivery and resource allocation that does not

compromise quality of care • Understand the organization of patient care services in the Plastic Surgery Service

setting • Advocate high quality health care and assist patients in dealing with complex health care

delivery systems • Work effectively with other members of the health care delivery team to improve health

care and health care system performance in the Plastic Surgery Service setting
