Types & Applications of Plastic/ PVC Card

A Plastic/ PVC card is typically made of PVC (polyvinyl chloride) material. PVC cards are extremely inexpensive and relatively durable. This ubiquitous white plastic is generally famous for making pipes, bottles, construction materials, medical equipment, inflatable toys and wire insulation. Most of PVC cards are the size of ISO standard CR80 (85.6mm x 54mm (3.375" x 2.125").

Simple PVC card carries no technological element inside or outside attached with the card. However, by printing a barcode or QR code or UV (ultra violet) hidden images/ characters on its surface, it can be featured with some unique identity which can only be read by their prospective scanners/ readers/ lights. Simple PVC cards are being used for issuing a wide range of cards.

Magnetic Stripe or Magstripe card possesses a magnetic strap (magnetic black ribbon) on the back of the card which allows encoding on it. There are mainly two types of Magstripe card and both are utilized as per their applications and regularity of usage requirement.

Contactless cards are chip based card. It has a tiny chip and antenna (wiring) inside. The card functions using RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) waves and is read by the RFID readers. Their usage depends upon the capacity of data encoded in chip and the distance between the card and the reading device. The types of contactless card are;

i. Proximity Card (125 KHz) ii. MiFare Card (13.56 MHz) iii. UHF (Ultra-High Frequency) Card (860-960 MHz)
