Back-to-School Resource for Standards-related CurriculaJust in time for the new school year, the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) is offering resources to school faculty and staff for the incorporation of standards into curricula. ANSI is offering these tools in an effort to support and prepare future standardization leaders for their future, professional careers. The resources were listed in an article at http://plasa.me/05tre. One of the resources is a series of back-to-school educational posters on standardization basics, which can be found at www.ansi.org/students. They are targeted at K-12 students, but can also be useful to standards newcomers of all ages.

In addition to the posters, ANSI is promoting the free, educational tools, courses, and resources on standards and conformity assessment education being offered to young, emerging professionals and

students through StandardsLearn.org. Resources there include a comprehensive standards presentation by ANSI, aimed at beginners, called An Introduction to Standards: Why, where, and how are they developed? among others. ANSI also offers a University Outreach initiative, which promotes the incorporation of standards-related information into the curricula of colleges and universities.

ANSI urges emerging professionals just launching their standardization careers to find out about and participate in standards development work that aligns with their line of work and expertise. One way of doing this is finding a related standards developing organization (SDO), or a U.S. Technical Advisory Group (TAG) to an International Organization for Standardization (ISO) technical committee (TC), subcommittee (SC), project committee (PC). ANSI can help connect students and professionals with the organizations that are doing this work, and offers a searchable list of ANSI-accredited standard developers at www.ansi.org/asd, and a list of all current ANSI-accredited U.S. TAGs to ISO at www.ansi.org/isotags.

New IRS Resource Helps Employers Understand the Health Care LawThe new ACA Information Center for Applicable Large Employers page on IRS.gov features information and resources for employers of all sizes on how the health care law may affect them, if they fit the definition of an applicable large employer (ALE). The web page helps employers determine if they are an ALE, and then offers resources and outreach materials to assist them.

Employers who averaged at least 50 full-time employees, including full-time equivalent employees, during 2014, are most likely an ALE for 2015. Employers with fewer than 50 full-time employees may be considered an applicable large employer if they share a common ownership with other employers. The IRS is recommending that applicable large employers take steps now to prepare for the coming filing season, because in 2016 an annual information return will be required of all ALEs, and notices to employees with health insurance information will be in required.

Employers who will file 250 or more information returns for 2015, must file the returns electronically through the ACA Information Reports system. Employers should download and review draft Publication 5165, Guide for Electronically Filing Affordable Care Act (ACA) Information Returns, now, for information on the communication procedures, transmission formats, business rules and validation procedures for returns that you must transmit in 2016.

Energy Department Unveils Roadmap to Double U.S. Energy Productivity by 2030The US Energy Department on 16 September unveiled a plan businesses, state and local governments, consumers, and other stakeholders can use to achieve the goal of doubling US energy productivity by 2030. The US Energy Department is, of course, focused on helping the US economy, but the advice can work with adaptation for other nations. The report, Accelerate Energy Productivity 2030: A Strategic Roadmap for American Energy Innovation, Economic Growth, and Competitiveness, identifies strategies and actions to advance energy efficiency. These include:

• states securing energy productivity through setting and updating vehicle and product codes and standards and providing energy performance information to consumers;

• utilities and regulators designing rates and related policies that more effectively align energy efficiency with utility business models;

• and businesses reinvesting avoided energy costs.

By doubling energy productivity, American families will be able to power their homes and vehicles using less energy; U.S. businesses will be able to manufacture more while spending less and cutting harmful carbon emissions.

The Roadmap focuses on scalable actions that have the potential to reduce energy consumption and support economic growth. While energy productivity strategies often involve multiple economic sectors and levels of government, the path laid out in this report demonstrate that any organization or individual can take action and help to double national energy productivity by 2030. The report provides a foundation for scaling up these efforts nationwide, while allowing for flexible and tailored solutions.

For more information, see the Energy Department news release and visit the Accelerate Energy Productivity 2030 website at http://plasa.me/c14k7 and http://www.energy2030.org/roadmap respectively.

It sets the framework for the adoption of delegated acts that will specify energy labels and product information sheets for specific energy-related products. It requires suppliers (manufacturers and importers) to provide energy labels with an A to G scale and product information sheets and requires dealers to display these labels and information sheets to consumers. It requires suppliers to register technical documentation concerning compliance in a database before placing product models on the market.
