How does reproduction occur in plants?

• Growers produce new plants by asexual reproduction all the time. New cells can be developed in a laboratory. Plants such as potatoes and grasses grow abundant when watered.

• Pollination is the process whereby wind, water or insects aid in bringing together the sperm and egg of a plant . This process helps to produce a zygote that later n develops into an embryo.

Asexual and Sexual

• In asexual reproduction the organism produces offspring that is genetically identical to itself. Most plants reproduce this way. Meiosis is not a prerequisite. Many foods we eat today are the product of this form of reproduction. For example, potatoes.

• During sexual reproduction a fusion between egg and sperm is required. The organism produced by this kind of reproduction is genetically different from its parents. Pollination is important to this process.

Reproductive Organs

• The female parts of a flower are called the pistil. The pistil is made of: a stigma, style and ovary which holds the ovules (eggs).

• The male part of a flower is called the stamen. The stamen is made of an anther and filament.

Organ functionsThe stamen is the male reproductive part. Sperm is produced in the stamen. It’s called pollen.

The Pistil is the female reproductive organ. The ovary holds the ovules. The unfertilized eggs of the flower.
