Make decisions based on:

• Respect for the faculty & their contribution to your major, program and university.

• The needs of the department or program.

Page 3: Planning Your SOC in Difficult Budget Times

3

“Careful Consideration”

Use “careful consideration” of the

faculty member’s performance (as

evidenced in their PAF), & their

entitlement to make your decisions.

4

What are Entitlements?

The word “entitlement” refers to theright of part-time faculty to a “similarassignment” as offered in the prioracademic year, if they satisfy several requirements.

Page 5: Planning Your SOC in Difficult Budget Times

5

How is entitlement to a one-year appointment established?

A one-year appointment is established at the beginning of an academic year, if and only if, a part-time faculty member worked two consecutive semesters in the prior academic year and is reappointed for the third consecutive semester.

Page 6: Planning Your SOC in Difficult Budget Times

6

If the part-time faculty member taught:• Fall 2008 and Spring 2009, or• Spring 2009 and Summer 2009, and is

offered units for Fall 2009….they are entitled to a one-year appointment and

similar assignment of units as taught in the previous academic year.

Example: One-Year Entitlement

7

How is an entitlement to a 3-year appointment established?

A 3-year entitlement is established at the beginning of the academic year, if and only if, a part-timefaculty member has worked at least one semester each academic year for the previous six years.

Page 8: Planning Your SOC in Difficult Budget Times

8

Example: 3-year entitlementIf the temporary faculty member taught:

Fall semester or Spring semester only, or both Fall & Spring semesters since the 2003-04 AY, they are entitled to a 3-year appointment beginning with the 2009-10 AY with a similar assignment of units as taught in the 2008-09 AY.

9

All Entitlements are conditional and based on:

...the availability of funds (budget) and student enrollment.

10

How do you know who is entitled to what?

Departments are responsible for tracking

entitlement information based on

appointment and teaching records.

Page 11: Planning Your SOC in Difficult Budget Times

11

Tracking Entitlements• The Office of Faculty Affairs prepares &

sends a list to the College Dean’s Office each year listing those faculty with new or renewed 3-year entitlements.

• The Office of Faculty Affairs does not track one-year entitlements.

Page 12: Planning Your SOC in Difficult Budget Times

12

We recommend:Excel spread sheet with the followinginfo. to help you track entitlements:

• Date of hire.• Terms taught (i.e., Fall, Spring, Summer).• Units assigned (“paid”) each term.• Accrued credit towards 1 year or 3-year

appointment.

13

What if I don’t have enough class sections to meet entitlements?

Then you need to make decisions about

who is first offered courses, etc. by

following the “Order of Assignment”.

Page 14: Planning Your SOC in Difficult Budget Times

14

The Order of Assignment is as follows:

1. First offer course(s) to 3-year full-time.

2. Next, offer course(s) to 3-year, part-time, up to their entitlement.

3. Next, offer course(s) one-year, part-time, up to their entitlement.

Page 15: Planning Your SOC in Difficult Budget Times

15

Order of Assignment (cont’d)4. Next, if you have satisfied all your

entitlements, offer units to p-t or f-t temporary faculty who taught in the previous AY (with no entitlement).

5. Finally, offer any remaining course(s) to temporary faculty as “new or additional work.”
