Elevators have an important role as a mode of carriage as well as determining the capacity of a building. The scale, usage and transient population of a given building should be considered when planning an elevator.

No. of service elevators that shouldbe planned is approximately two

thirds of the numbers of passengerelevators to be installed.

If restaurants are arranged on the top floor, extra elevator(s)

should be added.

17/20/24 persons

Determining the required number of elevators and their car speeds as well as serving floors are keyfactors that decide the service quality of the building. In order to make arrangements for elevatorsto operate efficiently in a building, traffic analysis and simulations are often carried out in the earlystages of building planning. Elevator speed and zoning can be calculated from the matrices below.

Elevator Equipment Plan

Type of Elevator1

Required Number of Elevators2

Type of elevator Service

Passenger elevator Carriage of occupants and guests

Elevator for the disabled Carriage of wheelchair user

Emergency elevator For emergency situation

Freight elevator Carriage of office supplies, equipment & aids

Car elevator Carriage of car for parking

Escalator Carriage of occupants and guests

Building Type Required No. of Elevators Capacity per Car

The recommended operating time from main floor to top floor should be less than 30 secondsas a rated speed for over 15 floors office building.

In general, the following is recommended.

① Passenger(load) : 17(1150kg), 20(1360kg) & 24(1600kg)② Car opening type : Center opening, Entrance width : 900~1100mm③ Car size : less than 1700mm

Proper Number of Passenger and Car service3

Elevator speed4

In order to service properly, the recommended number of servicing floors is 10 to 15. For more than 20 floors, we recommend that the elevators should be divided into more than2 groups. Service floor of every elevator within the same group should be identical.

It is recommended that one tenant avoid occupying floors in different zones. In a single purposebuilding (in which the entire space or a substantial portion of the entire space is occupied by onlyone firm), it is also recommended that the firm’s functions be arranged on the floors so as tominimize traffic demand between zones and that restaurants and conference rooms be arranged onelevator transfer floors.

Elevators should be arranged so that building occupants and visitors can go straight to public spacefloors such as the main lobby and cafeteria/restaurant floors from all other floors.

The top and bottom serving floors of a zone should be overlapped with the bottom and top servingfloors of its each adjoining zone respectively as elevator transfer floors.

If each elevator zone has too many serving floors, the required number of elevators will increase andthe zoning benefits will be ruined as a result. In general, the recommended number of serving floorsin a zone is 7 to 10.

The number of elevators planned in a zone can be roughly found to be appropriate or not by theformula “the number of serving floors in a zone divided by the number of elevators planned” asindicated in the table of ‘Elevator Requirement Efficiency in a Zone’ below. The recommendednumber of elevator units in a zone is 8 at the maximum.

For example, when there are 12 floors in a zone and the number of elevators is 6, then the elevatorrequirement efficiency in this zone is “12÷6 = 2”.

Carrying passengers to their destination zone as fast as possible, express zones are provided torun express or shuttle elevators between the lobby and each zone. This will also maximize highspeed elevator performance, reduce round trip time, increase passenger handling capacity, andreduce the required number of elevators.

Space above the low and middle zone elevator hoistways in the building is available for use asoffices and other purposes. The elevator hall space between express elevator serving floors is alsoavailable for use as storage. Rentable space in the building will thus be increased.

For skyscrapers or super high rise buildings, it is necessary to divide a building into groups ofcontiguous elevator serving floors, called zones, e.g. in low, middle and high zones, in order toprovide every passenger with as equal elevator service as possible. This theoretical building divisioninto groups of floors for elevator service is called ‘zoning’.

The zoning will bring about the following benefits :

Planning Guide

Planning Guide

The car inside shall allow for the turning of a wheelchair

Minimum distance from wall to elevator door shall be not less than 1.5m.

Entrance of elevators must not be excessively drawn

When the entrance of elevators is excessively drawn, it is hard for usersto see and ride the elevator.

Columns must not stick out into lobby

When a column sticks out into lobby, it is hard for users to see theelevator beyond the column and they are likely to miss the elevator.

Lobby must be open at both ends

When one end of the lobby is closed (alcove arrangement), theentrance of the lobby is often crowded and elevators near the endare less used, reducing operating efficiency. However, ancillarylobbies can be closed at one end because its traffic is less andcongestion is less of an issue.

Positioning of grouped elevators is as important as elevator zoning and independent elevatorposition in a building. Generally, it should be placed in a way so that a walking distance for users isminimal. In addition to the number of elevators in a group, the following should be taken intoconsideration.

Positioning of Grouped Elevators10

◆Two-Car Groupings

① Side-by-side arrangement

For a two-car group, side-by-side arrangement is best. Passengers face both cars and reactimmediately to a direction lantern for an arriving car, with minimum walking distance. Two carsfacing each other constitute an acceptable alternative as the passenger needs only turn around tobe facing an elevator.Separation of the elevators should be avoided. When the separation is great, it is hard to see whichelevator is coming and recognize them as a group.

Two cars opposite one arrangement makes walking distanceshorter, but there is very little difference in walking time witheither of the three-car arrangements, as the turn-around reactiontime offsets the shorter distance. Moreover, three-cararrangements are more aesthetically pleasing.

The lobby width should be about one and one-half times or1.6m minimum.

Passengers should be able to stand back far enough to see theentrances of all three cars, which requires more depth than two-car arrangements. With the one-opposite-two arrangement, lobbywidth should be from one and one-half to two times the cardepth, or a minimum 2.4m.

◆Three-Car Groupings

The arrangement of three cars in a row is preferable because passengers can react immediately to a directionlantern or arriving car.

The lobby in front of the elevators should, at a minimum, beas wide as the elevators are deep. (main floor is even wider)

When the lobby is too narrow, it takes more time for peopleoverflowing the lobby to ride the elevator, which slows downelevator operation as a result. When the cars are opposite each other, the reguired area shouldbe one and one-half to two times as deep.

Elevator Arrangements in a Group11

Planning Guide

Planning Guide

This arrangement is the most efficient with the minimum walking distance. The alternativearrangement, four cars in a row, has some disadvantages because of the increased distance betweenelevators at both ends. The preferred two-opposite-two arrangement should have a lobby from one and one-half to twotimes the depth of an individual elevator but no less than 3m in consideration for those instanceswhen all cars arrive at the main lobby filled and passengers entering or leaving must pass each other. For the four-car in a row arrangement, the lobby should be at least one and one-half times the depthof an individual elevator but no less than 2.4m. This width will allow a person to stand back farenough to see the directional lantern of any elevator.

A six-car in a row arrangement makes distance between elevators at both ends too long. If the twoend cars arrive simultaneously, the passengers who could not board must run to the other end andrisk missing that car also. It is also hard to realize which elevator is coming, and may miss the carwithout realizing that it has arrived.

The lobby width should be from one and three-fourths to two times the depth of an individualelevator but no less than 3m.

For those instance when all cars arrive at the main lobby filled and passengers entering or leavingmust pass each other. If the lobby is to be used as a passage for people other than elevatorpassengers, its width should be no less than 3.6m.

Three-opposite-four, or four-opposite-four arrangements provide passengers the minimum walkingdistance. All cars in a row arrangement makes the distance between elevators at both ends toolong. If the two end cars arrive simultaneously, the passengers who could not board must run to theother end and risk missing that car also. It is also hard to recognize which elevator is coming, andmay miss the car without realizing it is arrived. The lobby width should be about two times the depth of an individual elevator and never less than3m and the maximum width of the lobby should never exceed 4.3m for those instance when all carsarrive at the main lobby filled and passengers entering or leaving must pass each other. When thelobby is too wide, however, walking distance becomes too long and passenger may miss the arrivingcar. With an excessively wide lobby, moreover, cars may not be recognized as one group and someof them are mistaken as being in different groups serving different floors.

Set a passage between groups. In case of face-to-face arrangements, have a wider lobby. Arrange distinct face-to-face groups next to each other in the fashion of drawing below.

When elevators are zoned in two or more groups, each group must be arranged with the followingin mind.

Border of groups must be distinct.

If the border is not distinct, passengers who intend to board low-zone elevators may ride in a high-zone elevator. Specifically, the following arrangements are desirable :

Positioning of More Than One Group12

◆Four-Car Groupings

Two-Opposite-Two Arrangement

◆Five or Six-Car Groups

The arrangement of two-opposite-three, or three-opposite-three are preferred with the minimum walking distance.

◆Seven or Eight-Car Groupings

Technical Features

Feature

Anti-nuisance OperationIn case of substantial difference between the number of calls registered on the car operatingpanel and actual load in the elevator, the elevator prevents unnecessary operation bycancelling all registered calls when it arrives at the nearest floor.

Car Call CancellationAllows cancellation of an incorrectly registered car call. If you push a wrong floor button in thecar, you can cancel it by pressing the same button one more time.

Automatic Turn Off of

Car Light and Fan

Car illumination and fan are turned off automatically in case there is no hall call or car call tosave energy.

By Pass Operation (80%)If the actual load comes to more than 80% of the allowable maximum load, the elevator will notreact to the calling signals from other passing floors.

Over Load (110% of Rated

Load) Holding Stop

When the load of passengers exceeds the maximum capacity, a buzzer sounds and the elevatorremains stopped at that floor. When the passengers get off, the buzzer will stop. Consequentlyelevator doors will close and operation continues.

Anti Hall Button JammingIf landing door would not closed by a hall button’s jamming and it is caused car can’t startthen, the floor will close in force by the command from controller so that the car service nextcalls.

Door Reopen ControlWhile the car door is closing, if a door reopen signal is occured the door will be reopenedimmediately and after specified time expired the door will again close.

Car Door Safety EdgeThis device enables the doors to return to the fully open position, should the door encounter aperson or obstacle while closing.

Automatic Adjustment of

Door TimeDoor closing time can be adjusted in order to improve the efficiency. ●

Micro LevelingAn automatic two-way leveling device is provided to maintain the elevator car level with thelanding, regardless of elevator load or direction travel

Voice SynthesizerThis system provides passengers with audio information about car operation such as directionof travel, landing floor, etc.

Forced Floor Stop After service on specific floor stop by car call, the car is operated normally. ○

Supervisory PanelThis panel monitors elevator operations and conditions of emergency operations from thebuilding’s control room

Fire Return OperationIn case of fire every cars should be returned to the specified floor in order to evacuatepassengers safety.

Fireman OperationIn case of fire, a firemen can use the elevator which is stopped at the specified floor in order tosupport firemen for fire-fighting.

Multi-PhotoWhen passengers are entering or getting out of the elevator, the multi-photo device will preventthe door from closing.

Door Photo SensorThe doors will return to fully open position if the light ray unit detects an obstacle when thedoors are closing.

Back-up Operation

In normal operation, if the serial communication between the controller and it’s terminal boardhave something malfunction, the car mode is changed to a “Back-Up”mode automatically, thenthe car checks itself by servicing every even floors and every odd floors until the car returnsnormal condition. By this operation, even though the car has something malfunction, passergerscan be offered a limited service without shoutdown.

Safety Drive Operation

During normal operation, a malfunction is occurred suddenly but it’s not serious, in this case, ifthe car is not in a door zone, then the car starts to run to the nearest floor in slow speed. Afterstop at the nearest floor, the care remains stop with door fully open and “Out of Service”lamp. If the car condition is possible to return a normal condition itself then, the car can servicenormal operation again.

Parking Operation

In order for park the elevator, if the parking key is on position the car stop at the specified floorafter finish servicing of all of registered calls. After the car stops at the specified floor, the carlight and fan are off automatically and every buttons both on the car operating panel and hallbutton box are no more available.
