COLLEGE

This is in my opinion the best school magazine design. It has several strong points and is very eye catching.

The masthead is eye catching because it is a heavy sans serif font. The colour stands out as the background is a lighter colour. This attracts the audience as it is the first thing that the reader will see.

THE LOYOLITE

This school magazine is bad because of several reasons, the masthead is not bold and it is not as big as it should be. The pictures are unrealistic to a school and therefore does not go with the school magazine. The background is very simple and boring and is not eye catching to its readers. However is does have a date on it and the school logo which is good.

My Magazine production

Original picture Edited picture

The first thing I did was flip the picture so the model is on the right hand side. This is so the writing can be left aligned.

With the clone stamp tool I edited out the dirt on her shoe as it was distracting and did not look professional.

I changed the colour of her lips and made them red by using the paint tool and painted a pink colour over her lips very carefully. Then I changed it from normal to Linear dodge which made the lips look more natural and red.

Here I have added the masthead and the date line. I chose the date line to be on the left top corner because I want the shape of all the cover lines to be in a subtle C shape.

The font I used for the date line is Monotype corvisa. I Think this font is good for the date line as it looks elegant in a subtle way as it is only a small line.

The font for the mast head is Bodoni MT.

Adding text using a text box, I added a main cover line consisting of a kicker and an explanatory text. The font I used for “Ashleigh” is Edwardian script ITC. I felt this was a good font to use because it adds an elegance to the magazine. The explanatory text font is Arial because it is simple but still stands out and the colour use is orange and white as I am trying to co ordinate it with the colour of the text book and bits of her dress which is orange. The White is to co ordinate with the Masthead as it is white and also because it stands out against the Background.

This is the finished front cover. It has 4 cover lines, a masthead, barcode, date line and a selling line. The selling line, Date line, and 2 cover lines I decided to make the font to a script because it adds an elegance to the magazine. I decided to put the selling line at the bottom of the page and in black because it black stands out from the background and goes with the colour scheme and lastly it is at the bottom of the page because I thought it works better there than at the top of the page where it looks a bit crowded and un neat.

Conventions used / broken

The conventions that I broke were that not all of the cover lines were left aligned. This is because I realised that because it stands out it is more attractive and more people would be drawn to it being different.

The magazines text is in a C shape. This is a convention I stuck to because it is attractive and looks neat and professional.
