particular, an exploration of
the quarry which produced the
distinctive top-knots or pukao
which once adorned the sacred
heads of the moai.
The exhibition will run until
6th September 2015 but the
Moai will stay behind in the
Manchester Museum for anoth-
er few years. Make sure you come and see the exhibition
for yourself!
The Chilean Island of Rapa Nui
is home to some of the most
recognizable monumental
stone statues. Professor Colin
Richards, who is an archaeolo-
gist at the University of Man-
chester has worked on a new
exhibition that takes a look at
some of these statues, better
known as “Moai”.
One of these Moai names
Moai Hava meaning “dirty
statue” is on loan from the
British Museum. It weighs 3.3
tonnes and stands 1.56 metres
tall. It was collected from Rapa
Nui Island in 1868.
The Moai Hava is one of the
fourteen moai made from bas-
alt, the rest are carved from
the island’s softer volcanic tuff.
Rapa Nui has fascinated arche-
ologists throughout the centu-
ries, and the exhibition investi-
gates the work of key experts
who have studied the Island.
These include the British ar-
chaeologist Katherine
Routledge, who in 1913-14
made the first survey of the
island; the Norwegian explorer
Thor Heyerdahl; and Professor
Colin Richards, The University
of Manchester’s Professor of World Prehistory and Archae-
ology, who is currently investi-
gating monumentality.
Professor Richards said,
“Undoubtedly, the massive
statues of Rapa Nui Have
captured the popular im-
agination since Heyerdahl’s
expedition in the 1950s.
This exhibition attempts
to view the monuments in
a new way, exploring the
qualities and significance of
their composition, and in

available for Print books
If you need a book that the Library doesn’t
have in stock, let us know and we’ll buy a
copy. You can recommend texts for purchase via My Manchester. So
far we have purchased 1195 new print books through the Books on
Demand scheme over the last 6 months.
Due to the popularity of the eBooks on Demand scheme, we have now
spent 100% of the allocated funds and the scheme now closed. But
watch this space! We will start another cycle of e-Books on Demand in
the next academic year.

The Life Foundation recruits
and trains UK volunteers to
provide practical support to
children and adults with disa-
bilities and learning difficulties
in India and Romania. The
focus is on volunteers making
a lasting impact to the com-
munities whilst also experi-
encing the opportunity of a life
changing experience.
Most volunteering placements
are two weeks long and are
split between three core over-
seas projects:
Bacau, Romania: Teams
work on a summer school
with up to 200 Roma children,
to promote education along-
side Romanian volunteers.
Oltenia, Romania: Up to 10
volunteers per team work
with children and adults within
Local Authority Care homes
and institutions. Residents
generally have some sort of
developmental delay, medical
need or, in many
cases severe
additional needs.
Varanasi, In-dia: Between
three and six
volunteers per
team work to-
gether at a small
orphanage for disabled chil-
dren to provide therapeutic
and practical support.
One of the Life Foundation’s
Directors, Lucy Swinton, won
the University of Manchester
Staff Volunteer of the Year
Award in 2014. Lucy began
volunteering with the organi-
zation in 2008 when she visit-
ed projects in Romania and
India. While Lucy was doing
her undergraduate
degree at the Universi-
ty of Manchester, she
was the project coor-dinator for the Oltenia
project. In her final
year, Lucy became one
of the organization’s
Directors and now has
this role alongside her full
time job at the University.

The Leadership of Learning is
one of the portfolio of units
developed by University Col-
lege for undergraduate stu-
dents. It is available to study in
Semester 1 and Semester 2
either as a 10 credit or a 20
credit unit.
What is involved?
A central component of both units is a work placement in a
school, where you will work
alongside teachers and pupils.
The placement will normally
be arranged as ten half days
over the course of the semes-
ter. All activities occur under
the supervision of a teacher.
The aim of the units is to pro-
vide you with the knowledge,
skills and understanding of
aspects of working and leader-
ship in a professional context.
This will be of value not only if
you are considering embarking
upon a career in teaching, but
would also help you develop
key transferable skills sought
by a range of employers.
For both the 10 and 20 credit
unit you will undertake prepa-
ration prior to the placement
including sessions on managing
relationships and behavior for
learning, the social and educa-
tional context of teaching and
learning and leading learning in
a socio-culturally diverse set-
ting.
What Next?
If you apply for the unit you will be invited for a short
informal interview to discuss
your reasons for wanting to
undertake the unit and any
previous experience working
with children and young peo-
ple. Acceptance onto the unit
is conditional on satisfactory
Disclosure and Barring Service
(DBS).

The library will once again be
running a programme of well-
being workshops throughout
the exam period. We are also
introducing a new style of
academic skills revision sup-
port. These two hour drop in
sessions will each cover a
different topic e.g. writing for
exams, planning and time man-agement, revision strategies
spaces. We are also operating

Postgraduate Scholarship Scheme
The University of Manchester is
offering a large number of schol-
arships, each worth £10,000 in
funding, to UK and EU students
who will be starting their post-
graduate taught master’s courses
in September 2015.
The postgraduate Scholarship
Scheme, which is part of a High-
er Education Funding Council for
England (HEFCE) initiative, is
aimed at widening access to
master’s courses by removing
barriers to postgraduate educa-
tion for students from un-
derrepresented groups.
Meet one student who applied
to this scheme and has benefit-
ted immensely.
Shaun is studying towards MEd
Psychology of Education. He
initially applied for a Professional
and Career Development Loan through the bank but was short-
ly declined. The prospect of not
having the opportunity to study
the postgraduate degree that
you are really interested in was
terrifying.
Instead of being denied the
chance to move into psychology.
He decided to study part-time
while continuing to work as a
retail manager at the Trafford
Centre. But being awarded the
scholarship allowed him to
choose to study full-time.
“The scholarship has enabled me
to study at postgraduate level
without getting into any more
debt and to not have to work full
-time, which allows me to con-
centrate on my studies,” Shaun
explains. “In fact it has allowed
me to study at postgraduate level
full stop, as I wouldn’t be here
otherwise.”
You have until 22nd
May 2015 at 5pm to
submit your applica-
tion. Please click here

and how to apply.

We Need Your Textbooks!
Textbook Rescue is back in a bid to save hun-
dreds of unwanted textbooks from a life of gather-
ing dust, bringing them out from under beds and
back into the hands of students.
Last year, your generosity provided new students
with over 2000 free textbooks!
This year, we want to help even more, so if you have any textbooks that you
know you won’t need next year, please donate them to the new students who
will be starting this September.
After you have finished assignments and exams, simply take your unwanted
textbooks to your site library but the Learning Commons and The John Rylands
Library will not be acting as donation points. A member of staff can point you in
the right direction.
