DIRECTOR’S NOTE

“Art, in itself, is an attempt to bring order out of chaos.” - Stephen Sondheim

Into the Woods has always been a favorite of mine. Growing as a performer and learning the production side of theatre, there was always something new to discover whenever I would come back to Into the Woods. It was, and is, one of the most multifaceted musical theatre experiences: blending of well-known fairytales; the intricate, quirky and ironic play on words; and the mirror being held up to the audience’s feelings of life, death, love and loss has always been fascinating. The way this show moves so quickly from character to character, song to song, and fear to spine-tingling fear feels very chaotic, but it is deliberate.

As a kid I always loved seeing things reimagined. New versions of soda or cereals, movies remade, recast, and redistributed. Taking something wonderful and turning it on its head to reveal even more always intrigued me, my favorite being Baz Lurhman’s modern adaptation of William Shakespeare Romeo + Juliet. I watched that film over and over, and as a teen and into my adult life, I would try to think of classic things in modern terms. How would this go over in today’s world? If a modern handgun is the equivalent of a sword, what is the equivalent of a cell phone, or a laptop? Into the Woods as a “fairytale mash-up” was already high on my list of favorite things, and when I got the chance to direct this show, I couldn’t wait to put my own personal mark on it.

I believe that theatre is a living, breathing animal, and the different emotions and interpretations that actors breathe into the lives of their characters are what make live theatre so fascinating. Modernizing Into the Woods was an expression of the creativity and timelessness of the themes in this show. Making difficult choices, parenting and growing up too fast through the maze of adolescence will always be matters that cannot be ignored.

Pairing up with a team that had the same enthusiasm for possibilities creativity was essential and having Manny in the role of Assistant Director was the best thing that could have happened. Working with a Costumer who knows modern fashion taste and sensibility and who was ready to take risks was so important, and Ellie delivered time and time again. I love the fearlessness of this cast and crew, and how ready everyone is to jump into the unknown. This is what theatre means to me. This is how we express ourselves. I cannot be more excited than I am right now to share this Moment in the Woods with you. I wish.
