Planet Earth

Part One: The

Measurement

of Time

Page 2: Planet Earth Part One: The Measurement of Time. The planet we live on is called Earth

The planet we live on is called Earth.

Page 3: Planet Earth Part One: The Measurement of Time. The planet we live on is called Earth

It is one of nine planets in our Solar System.

Page 4: Planet Earth Part One: The Measurement of Time. The planet we live on is called Earth

The word Solar

means, “of or having to do

with the sun.”

Page 5: Planet Earth Part One: The Measurement of Time. The planet we live on is called Earth

These nine planets

orbit around the

sun.

Page 6: Planet Earth Part One: The Measurement of Time. The planet we live on is called Earth

Each orbit equals one full trip around the sun.

Page 7: Planet Earth Part One: The Measurement of Time. The planet we live on is called Earth

Notice that the Earth’s orbit around the sun is not a perfect circle.

Page 8: Planet Earth Part One: The Measurement of Time. The planet we live on is called Earth

Earth’s orbit around the sun is called an “elliptical” orbit because it does form a perfect circle.

Page 9: Planet Earth Part One: The Measurement of Time. The planet we live on is called Earth

There are two points in Earth’s orbit of the sun that are significant.

Page 10: Planet Earth Part One: The Measurement of Time. The planet we live on is called Earth

They are the “Perihelion” and the “Aphelion”

Page 11: Planet Earth Part One: The Measurement of Time. The planet we live on is called Earth

“Perihelion” comes from two

words, “ Peri” meaning

around and “Helios” meaning

sun.

Page 12: Planet Earth Part One: The Measurement of Time. The planet we live on is called Earth

The “Perihelion” is the point in Earth’s orbit when it comes closest to the sun.

Page 13: Planet Earth Part One: The Measurement of Time. The planet we live on is called Earth

Aphelion is made up from two words, “Apo” meaning from and

“Helios” meaning sun.

Page 14: Planet Earth Part One: The Measurement of Time. The planet we live on is called Earth

The “Aphelion” is the point in the Earth’s orbit when it is furthest away from the sun.

Page 15: Planet Earth Part One: The Measurement of Time. The planet we live on is called Earth

When do you think we

experience our summers, when we are

at the Perihelion or

the Aphelion?

Page 16: Planet Earth Part One: The Measurement of Time. The planet we live on is called Earth

You’re right! We experience summer when the Earth is at aphelion.

Page 17: Planet Earth Part One: The Measurement of Time. The planet we live on is called Earth

Even though the Earth is at the point farthest from the sun our hemisphere is tilted towards the sun and we receive more direct sunlight.

Page 18: Planet Earth Part One: The Measurement of Time. The planet we live on is called Earth

We experience our winter season when Earth is at it’s perihelion because our hemisphere is tilted away from

the sun and we receive less direct sunlight.

Page 19: Planet Earth Part One: The Measurement of Time. The planet we live on is called Earth

We call the time it takes the Earth to complete an orbit around the sun a year.

Page 20: Planet Earth Part One: The Measurement of Time. The planet we live on is called Earth

There are twelve months

in our year.

Page 21: Planet Earth Part One: The Measurement of Time. The planet we live on is called Earth

Four Seasons in our year:

Summer, Fall, Winter, and

Spring.

Page 22: Planet Earth Part One: The Measurement of Time. The planet we live on is called Earth

There are three

hundred and sixty-

five days in our year.

Page 23: Planet Earth Part One: The Measurement of Time. The planet we live on is called Earth

We have fifty-two weeks in our year

52

Page 24: Planet Earth Part One: The Measurement of Time. The planet we live on is called Earth

Each week has seven days

Page 25: Planet Earth Part One: The Measurement of Time. The planet we live on is called Earth

Each day has twenty-four hours.

Page 26: Planet Earth Part One: The Measurement of Time. The planet we live on is called Earth

Each hour has sixty minutes.

Page 27: Planet Earth Part One: The Measurement of Time. The planet we live on is called Earth

Each minute has sixty seconds.
