A Museum of Art and Culture Over the last 20 years, the Peabody Essex Museum (PEM) has distinguished itself as one of the fastest-growing art museums in North America. Its roots date to the 1799 founding of the East India Marine Society, an organization of Salem captains and supercargoes who had sailed beyond either the Cape of Good Hope or Cape Horn. Society members brought to Salem a diverse collection of objects from the northwest coast of America, Asia, Africa, Oceania, India and elsewhere.

Today PEM’s collection includes 1.8 million objects, many of which are the finest of their kind. Asian Export Art: the largest and most comprehensive in the world

Chinese Art: reflects the breadth of China’s visual culture over the centuries

Fashion, Costumes and Textiles: ranges from international, historic materials to modern and contemporary fashion

Indian Art: the preeminent collection of Indian art from post-colonial times to the present

Maritime Art and History: the finest collection of maritime art in the nation

Native American Art: the oldest, most comprehensive ongoing collection in the Western hemisphere

Photography: more than a million rare and vintage images and nearly every photographic format

Historic Houses: 24 properties, including National Historic Landmarks and six are on the National Register of Historic Places

Yin Yu Tang: a 200-year-old house, the only example of Chinese domestic architecture in the United States
