5Water and Environmental Sanitation (WES) is a crucial pillar of Plan’s programs

• USD 22 million were spent in WES during 2004 worldwide.

•Priority issues:•Community-managed WES programs•Growing emphasis on hygiene education•Growing emphasis on excreta disposal

•Global and regional WES policies and strategies are being developed, to complement existing public health’s.

•Permanent WES and public health staff at International Headquarters, Regional and Country Offices and Program Units (sub-national).

•Long-term presence in 45 developing countries in Asia, Africa and Latin America. Permanent technical and management staff in the Country Office and in the Program Units.

•Worldwide, successful experience and methods promoting local, community and children’s participation in development programs.

•Commitment to community-managed WES programs with emphasis on total sanitation, hygiene education and capacity building.

•Current working collaboration with major health stakeholders in these 45 countries, including government agencies (both at national and sub-national levels), local and international NGOs (including US PVO) and community-based organizations.
