plan b magazine ad

1
The first thing the reader is drawn to when looking at the advertisement is the band name/logo at the top of the page. It reads ‘Plan B presents’ which straight away informs the reader of the band name. Also, the way it says ‘presents’ lets the reader know that something new is coming from the artist and makes them want to read on and look at the rest of the advert to find out what it is and when it’s out. The reason this is appealing to the reader is because of the bright colour and the positioning of it on the page. However, the reader does have to look carefully to read the font used as initially it is quite confusing and hard to read. If somebody was just passing by or flicking through a magazine, if they were not familiar with the artist then they may not know who it is and not bother to look. The typefaces used are all sans serif, creating quite a harsh, sharp tone to the font. Also, the majority of the letters on the advertisement are in upper case. This gives the impression that it’s shouting at the reader to try and get their attention. The size and boldness of the text again grabs the reader’s attention and makes it easy to read and understand. The lack of text attracts a reader as they can straight away see that they don’t have to read lots to get the information from the advertisement. The poster only takes seconds to read, so for somebody reading a magazine or passing by, it is attractive as they can get the information from the advertisement in just a glance. The main image on the advertisement is of the singer himself. This makes the reader straight away familiar with the artist. However, for somebody who isn’t familiar with the artist and does not like the genre of music, they may get a bad impression of the artist as he is smoking a cigarette. This is a stereotype of the rap music genre and as the advertisement was found in a general music magazine, it may not be respected by everybody reading the magazine. However, the cigarette symbolises youthful rebellion, along with the hoody that the artist is wearing. This reflects the age group and target audience that the artist is reaching out to. The logo at the top of the page is shaped as a razorblade. This

Page 1: Plan B Magazine Ad

This displays masculinity, which again may reflect the audience that the artist is targeting. The high rise buildings in the background imagery may represent a lower class and associate with the artist’s background also.

The colours used are fairly dull and dark, e.g. the black and white. This may reflect the music within the album and any messages behind the music. The red has connotations with danger. This again may reflect the music within the album or even the artist himself and his background. The red also stands out against the black and white, making it attract readers.
