Bad Paraphrase

The word yo-yo is a Philippine word that means 'come back.‘ In the Philippines, the yo-yo was a major weapon for over 400 hundred years. This Philippines’ weapon was large with sharp edges and studs. It was affixed to thick twenty-foot ropes for flinging at enemies or prey. It was not until the 1920s that Americans first became aware of the word yo-yo. Pedro Flores, a Philippine immigrant, began making a toy that he called the yo yo at his small toy factory in California.

Good ParaphraseEven though the yo yo is a common name

in houses today, it wasn’t always thought of as a fun, challenging toy as we know it. The yo yo actually came from the Phillipines almost 400 years ago. They used a yo yo not as a toy, but as a weapon. It hung from a thick 20-foot rope and had sharp edges and studs attached to it. This made a great weapon to fling at enemies or animals.

Eventually, in the 1920’s Americans heard of the term yo yo when Pedro Flores, a man who moved to California from the Phillipines, started making the yo you as a toy. It’s popularity can still be seen today!

• 43 CATSEYES, 1934Percy Shaw, the inventor of those tiny reflectors which are sunk into the centre of roads, was born in Yorkshire. He used to run a road repair business and as a young man he realized how dark and dangerous unlit country roads could be at night. On his way home one night he noticed some reflectors on a poster by the roadside and this gave him the idea for 'cats eyes' in the road. His first road reflectors were. used in 1934 and the design has barely altered in 40 years, including the simple, effective, automatic collapse of the reflector system when a wheel runs over it.
