Plagiarism• The following regulations are quoted from Section B of

the University of Toronto, Code of Behavior on Academic Matters: Plagiarism

• B.i. 1. It shall be an offence for a student “knowingly”:

• (d) to represent as one’s own, any idea or expression of an idea or work of another, in any academic examination or term test or in connection with any other form of academic work, i.e. to commit plagiarism.

• Wherever in this Code an offence is described as depending on “knowing”, the offence shall likewise be deemed to have been committed if the person ought reasonably to have known.

Plagiarism

• All academic work, written or otherwise, submitted by students to their instructors is expected to be the result of their own thought, research, or self-expression.

• A student is guilty of plagiarism when they submit work purporting to be their own but which, in any way, borrows ideas, organization, wording or anything else from another source without appropriate acknowledgment of the fact.

• Plagiarism includes reproducing someone else's work, whether it is a laboratory report from a friend, a published article, a chapter of a book, web site material, or whatever.

• Plagiarism also includes the practice of employing or allowing another person to alter or revise the work that a student submits as his/her own, whoever that other person may be.

Plagiarism

• Students may discuss work among themselves or with an instructor, teaching assistant or tutor, but when the actual work is written, it must be done by the student, and the student alone.

• When a student's assignment involves research of outside sources or information, the student must carefully acknowledge exactly what, where and how he/she has employed them.

• If the words of someone else are used, the student must put quotation marks around the passage in question and add an appropriate indication of its origin.

• Making simple changes while leaving the organization, content and phraseology intact represents an act of plagiarism.

Plagiarism

• In response to these regulations, the Faculty of Arts and Science enforce the following policy:

• An academic offence set out in the Code of Behavior pertaining to plagiarism in any assignment will lead to a mark of zero for the entire assignment component of the course
