What is Plagiarism?

Plagiarism is actually the publication of another author’s thoughts, ideas or expressions and represent them as one’s own work.

It is often not considered as a crime but it is a moral offence.

Copying and pasting stuff from online websites.

Using photographs without permission from the owner.

Using another student’s work as your own.

Citing sources you didn’t use.`

Full plagiarism Copy-pasting the entire thing without

any change even in punctuation. Work of lazy people.

Partial plagiarism Combination from two or more sources. Reason : inadequacy of knowledge.

Minimalistic Plagiarism: Authoring someone else’s ideas in your

own words/in a different flow.Source Citation:

Writing complete information with source reference .It becomes plagiarism ▪ if you give false references.▪ Merge information from various sources into

it.

Self plagiarism: Using your own work fully or partially . Using same content again and again

even when you are supposed to do fresh work.

Plagiarism is a crime . It has its consequences.

Two types of plagiarists Those who deliberately plagiarize. The case in which source is not cited

properly.

In criminal law, plagiarism is considered as “punishable by fines” and upto a year in prison.

In civil law the author can sue the plagiarist for violation of copyright.

Some tips: Paraphrasing. Quotation marks. Citation.

Good paraphrase : Change the order and structure of the

sentence. Use synonyms/different forms of words. Change the voice of the sentence.

Use quotation marks: If you “borrow” an authors exact words

or sentences, use quotation marks around it.

If you are omitting certain sections, put '......' in between words to indicate this

Citation : It will tell the reader that your material

came from some other source.▪ Include the authors name and page number.▪ Give information about the source.

Certain tools available for this purpose.

Tells how much % of a research paper or book is copied from some where.

You read:

“The tip given by professors and college officials is that students should simply do their homework. The most commonly prescribed amount is at least two hours of class preparation for every hour spent in the classroom…”

You write:

College students should do their homework.
