Placing a Video Call with Zoom – PC/Mac

To sign up for a PIR Zoom profile and download the Zoom App on any device:

7. Visit http://www.pirweb.org/en/sign-up and fill out the appropriate online form for you. (i.e. K-12 Educator) You will receive a welcome email immediately at the address you provided.

7. Follow the “Getting Started with Zoom” instructions found at http://www.pirweb.org/en/support.

To search ExpertBook and contact a subject matter expert:

1. Go to http://www.vroc.ca/expertbook and sign in with the username and password provided to you in your welcome email. (Username: teacher, Password: teacher123)

2. Use the checkboxes to select your desired language and grade level.

3. In the search field, type your desired key word(s). (i.e. biochemistry, geometry, renewable energy, etc.)

4. Click search.

5. Scroll through the search results to find the most appropriate individual. Click on any expert name to see their full profile.

6. To pre-arrange a connection, send an email to the expert at the address listed in their ExpertBook profile. Be sure to include:

• Your preferred date(s)/time(s) (including time zone!),

• What you would like to discuss,

• The students’ grade level,

• What your students already know on the topic, and

• Student questions before the connection, if applicable.

7. At your pre-arranged time, you can place a video call directly to the expert by following the steps

below.

To place a video call on your desktop/laptop computer:

1. Open Zoom from the Start menu (PC) or Applications folder (Mac) and click “Sign In”.

2. Enter your email and password. Check the box for “Remember me” and click “Login”.

3. At the bottom of the “Zoom – Free Account” window, click the “Contacts” tab. Expand the desired contact groups by clicking the triangle icons on the left (i.e. Experts, PIR Staff).

4. Hover your cursor over the person you want to call and click the “Meet” button that appears.

5. You will see your local video while you wait for the other Zoom user to join the video call/meeting.

6. If prompted, Click “Join by Computer”, check the box next to “Automatically join audio by computer...”, and then click “Join Audio by Computer”.

7. When you are finished, hover your mouse over the video window to access the controls. Click “End Meeting” in the bottom right corner.

To share your screen in a Zoom video call:

1. Open the program or document that you wish to share. �Do not minimize the program.

2. Once you’re participating in a Zoom video call, hover your mouse over the video window to make the control �buttons visible. �

3. Click the green “Share Screen” button at the bottom middle. �

4. In the pop-up, select the icon for the window you wish to share. � ***Note: If you wish to share something that contains sound, check the box in the bottom left corner before proceeding.

5. Click “Share Screen” in the bottom right. (A green outline appears around the content you are sharing.) �

6. If you wish to draw attention to specific sections of your shared content, try clicking “Annotate” in the bar of control buttons. Explore the drawing tools and the spotlight function. You can click and drag this toolbar out of the way if needed. When you’re finished annotating, you can click the red X to make the annotation toolbar disappear. �

7. When you’re finished sharing, click the red “Stop Share” button at the top of your screen. Your webcam video will go back to filling the video call window for the other party in the call. �

8. When finished testing, click �“Leave Meeting” / “End Meeting” in the bottom right corner of the Zoom meeting window.
