Vice Chancellor's Blessings

Agriculture has evolved in to agribusiness which is a vast and complex system that reaches far beyond the farm to

include all those who are involved in producing and supplying food, fuel and fibre to the consumers. In recent times,

agribusiness system has undergone a rapid transformation as new industries have evolve and traditional farming

operations have grown larger and more specialized. An Agri-business manager therefore has to operate in a variety

of environment encompassing many aspects of economy i.e. agricultural producers, business that provide supplies

and services to the producers, cooperatives, businesses that add value to agricultural products, and those which

facilitate the marketing of agricultural products to local and foreign markets. In addition environmental issues,

market research, econometrics and risk assessment have also become essential components of agribusiness.

The rapid globalization of agricultural industry has necessitated the demand for agriculture business managers with

knowledge of business administration , accounting, finance and farming technology, especially those who could

apply modern business concepts to farming & marketing operations. This is indeed the need of hour to break the vicious cycle of poverty and

improve the economic status of farmers. The agribusiness management course offered at this university prepare the students to take up

responsibilities in managing infrastructural, administrative and financial responsibilities related to the agri-sector and its entire value chain.

It is a matter of great pride that the Department of Agri-business Management is making conscious efforts to produce trained and qualified agri-

business graduates who have necessary skills and competence to be successful Agri-managers. I extend my good wishes for the sustained

growth and global recognition of this department.

Prof. Poonam Singh Dean

Agriculture has always been the mainstay of Indian economy because of its high share in employment

and livelihood creation notwithstanding its reduced contribution to the nation's GDP. The share of

agriculture in the gross domestic product has registered a steady decline from 36.4 per cent in 1982-83 to

18.3 per cent in 2005-06 and further decline to 13.7 per cent in 2012-13. Yet this sector continues to

support more than half a billion people in India providing employment to 52 per cent of the workforce. It

is also an important source of raw material for many industrial products, particularly fertilizers, pesticides,

agricultural implements and a variety of consumer goods. The importance of agriculture to the national

economy is crucial in terms of meeting the growing demands for food and raw materials of the non-farm

and urban population, expanding the secondary and tertiary sectors of the economy, widening the extent of markets for industrial produce,

earning the much-needed foreign exchange, maintaining price stability and mobilization of resources for capital formation. Agricultural

development thus facilitates a cumulative growth process. The significance of agriculture in the national economy is best explained by

considering the role of agriculture under different heads namely product contribution, factor contribution and market contribution.

The increasing globalization of the agricultural industry has highlighted the need for a manager with experience of social and cultural skills,

production and consumption in the major Agri-markets of the world. This has thrown new challenges to Agri-business for which not only the

quality of products but their transactions, across many borders, have to be managed effectively. The programme of MBA (agri-business) is an

innovative response to the sweeping changes in the global agricultural industries. Those involved in this sector need to be aware of the forces

responsible for these changes and of the way in which firms in the Agri-industry can respond to the new challenges.

I trust, entrepreneurs will derive the benefits of the managerial skills of these young Agri-managers.

Best wishes,

Prof. Poonam Singh
