Message from the Dean
The Jamsetji Tata School for Disaster Management
(JTSDM), with great pride presents the prospective
graduates of Masters in Disaster Management
(2014-2016) for their placement. We ,at JTSDM,
have equipped our students with a wide range of
knowledge, skills and perspectives in this new disci-
pline of national and international priority. The rich,
multidisciplinary background that our students come
from enables them to put their learning into practice and constructively contribute to different
domains of this emerging field as budding professionals. TISS has been involved in all as-
pects of Disaster Management from its very beginning. This involvement has ranged from
supporting government in policy and plan making, capacity building activities to coordination
with civil society organizations. TISS was also a pioneer in introducing disaster manage-
ment as a taught course since1980s. The Master’s programme in Disaster Management is
being offered by the Centre since 2007
While enabling an understanding of disasters from the vantage point of science and tech-
nology in prediction, mitigation and response, the programme also fosters a critical and re-
flective appreciation of current debates in disaster management within the framework of so-
cial and environmental justice, state and civil society dynamics, development, conflict and
globalization. Student learning is enriched through classroom teaching, fieldwork, intern-
ship, disaster response, public lectures, training programme, conferences, skill based work-
shops, and guest lectures. Apart from theoretical and experiential components, the course
offers a strong research base to students in the form of research dissertation.
By the end of their two years at TISS, our students are ready to go into the field to develop
as professionals with the right knowledge, attitude and aptitude for disaster management
with a clear perspective grounded in the understanding of different vulnerabilities.

About Tata Institute of Social Sciences
The Tata Institute of Social Sciences which now
embarks on 80th glorious year of its existence, has
always opened up a vast array of opportunities for
students as far as acquiring knowledge and skills
are concerned. Apart from the conventional classes
held in the institute classrooms, TISS believes in
providing its students with hands-on experience.
Sir Dorabji Tata Graduate School of Social Work
had its humble beginning in 1936 with 20 students.
The institute was a pioneering effort in the field of
social science study, research and practice in India.
It was the fruition of Dr. Clifford Manshardt’s vision
of a postgraduate school of social work, of a nation-
al stature. The school was renamed 'Tata institute of
Social Sciences' in 1944. The Institute made a mark
in the history of social work in India, through pio-
neering efforts like publishing the Indian Journal of
Social Work, which is the first journal of social work
in South Asia. The year 1964 was an important
landmark in the history of the Institute, when the
Government of India recognized it as a Deemed
University. The Institute has been conferred with the
prestigious 5-star rating by the National Assess-
ment and Accreditation Council (NAAC).
TISS has been undertaking innovative Field Action
Projects (FAPs) since 1930s and continues to do so
even today. These FAPs focus on the empower-
ment of marginalized groups, testing new approach-
es and strategies in response to changing social re-
alities, facilitating development of field-based
knowledge and practice–theory continuum. TISS
has always reached out to support people affected
by natural and human-made crisis. The Institute's
work is centered around relief management; psy-
chosocial support to women, children and other vul-
nerable groups; assessment of loss and impact to
lives, property, livelihoods, environment and infra-
structure; rehabilitation and development needs;
mobilization of human resources for relief and reha-
bilitation work; facilitating community participation in
the reconstruction and rehabilitation process; policy
and programme development support to govern-
ment and non-governmental organizations (NGOs);
coordination of civil society participation; training
and capacity building of personnel engaged in relief
and rehabilitation work; publication and documenta-
tion; and conflict resolution and peace building initi-
atives.

M.A/M.Sc. Disaster Management
Disaster management is emerging globally as a
field of study that deals with an increasing range of
risks and vulnerabilities that societies, nations, and
communities have to understand and learn to cope
with. The expansion of the scope of the term
―disaster‖ beyond its original definition, referring
solely to natural hazards, has made disaster studies
an important aspect of the way we study the impact
of shocks, of varied origin and types, on society and
people. Even if the subject originally began in the
practitioner’s domain, it is now increasingly a field of
study that combines theoretical perspectives and
understanding with a range of skills and techniques
that have become increasingly sophisticated.
For developing societies, disaster risk reduction is
understood as an integral part of development, es-
pecially in the context of global discourses such as
climate change. Understanding the vulnerabilities of
the poor and the impact of disasters on marginal-
ized communities is essential to an analysis of the
disproportionate impact of disasters in the develop-
ing world. Disaster risk reduction, disaster response
and post-disaster recovery need to be examined
and evaluated from the perspectives of justice, equi-
ty and social inclusion. In India, disaster manage-
ment as a field of systematic study and practice is
still in its initial stages, providing tremendous scope
for exploration, research and the evolution of appro-
priate techniques and best practices.
The Master’s programme in Disaster Management,
offered by the Jamsetji Tata School for Disaster
Management (JTSDM), is a culmination of the Insti-
tute’s experience of working in disaster-affected ar-
eas since its inception. It aims at enhancing
knowledge, capacities and skills, and perspective
on disasters. While enabling an understanding of
disasters from the vantage point of science and
technology in prediction, mitigation and response,
the programme also fosters a critical appreciation of
current approaches to disaster risk reduction, re-
sponse and recovery. It seeks to locate these ap-
proaches within the framework of an understanding
of questions of development in the twenty first cen-
tury challenges related to globalization; social, eco-
nomic and environmental justice, state and civil Stu-
dents will have opportunities to develop expertise in
thematic areas of their choice such as public health,
peace and conflict and human security, remote
sensing techniques and GIS, psycho-social health
and logistics and supply chain management. This
two-year course includes intensive contact classes,
combined with supervised field work and internship.
A master’s level research dissertation is a compul-
sory component of the programme.
As an emerging field, the need for qualified person-
nel within disaster management is high. Students
who graduate with this degree will find opportunities
in the disaster risk reduction and management sec-
tors, and allied developmental sectors, in govern-
ment and non-government organizations and con-
sultancy firms. They could also go on to pursue re-
search, training and teaching careers in disaster
studies and allied areas.

”We found the difference in their work and the work of many others who
were earnest and had done their best, but who did not have the training
to do it well. There was the difference between the trained workers and
the merely enthusiastic workers.” – Jawahar Lal Nehru on disaster relief
work done by TISS in Pakistan- India partition

Pre-placement talk/presentations
This process involves the organizations,
which have been approached for recruit-
ment, to give a talk or a presentation on
what exactly they do on the field. This ses-
sion consists of talks on the history and ori-
gins of the organization, type of work done
on the field, kind of work and opportunities
they offer etc. Also, this is the time when
students put forth queries to the recruiter,
on the basis of the presentation shown to
them.
Application/CV submission
This is after the presentation and discussion
is over. Based on individual interest and the
company's criteria for accepting applica-
tions, the list of interested (&eligible) stu-
dents would be sent to the Organization.
This step needs to be done in a specified
time frame. After this the Organization
would be given sufficient time to shortlist
candidates for further screenings and inter-
views.
Selection Process
After the short listing of candidates, the or-
ganization is expected to inform shortlisted
students about the further recruitment pro-
cess. After the final stage of selection, the
organization is expected to confirm to se-
lected candidates within 3 days, otherwise
the candidates would be free to sit for other
placement opportunities
