Did You Know? It can take weeks for a person’s body to acclimate to hot weather. It is smart to limit sun exposure, especially until one’s body is conditioned to it.

Joanne celebrates her 11 year anniversary at Ashley Pointe.
Congratulations Joanne!
Here’s Joanne’s story!
Dorothy “Joanne” Shurvinton was born November 13, 1926. She was the youngest of 2 daughters.
Joanne’s father was a chemist for the Department of Agriculture and her mother was a homemaker.
When Joanne was 9 mos. old they moved to Wenatchee. Joanne remembers when she was in Kin-
dergarten passing out homemade fudge to kids who had the measles. The family moved to North-
port, WA. just before the 5th grade, and from there they moved to Alexandria, Virginia. They lived
there for 3 years. Joanne says they must have visited every museum and artifact in Washington
D.C.
Joanne graduated from Richmond High School in California in 1944. Soon after that she got her
first job as a hand grenade fuse inspector. Joanne met her soon to be husband Glenn Shurvinton
when she was 16 years old, they corresponded for a while when Glenn was serving as a PVC in the
U.S. Marine Corp stationed in Guam. They eventually married in 1947.
Just after their marriage, Joanne and Glenn got a summer job working at Yosemite National Park.
Glenn cutting wood while Joanne was a hotel maid. When the summer was over Joanne & Glenn
moved to San Paulo, Ca. where Glenn got a job driving a fuel truck for Chevron Oil.
Their first child Ronda was born in Oakland and soon after they moved to Pasco, WA. ,where their
son Stan was born. Joanne stayed home raising the children and keeping up their home. They
moved to Oregon where they lived in a couple of towns there. They finally settled down in Eureka
Ca. for 30 years, retiring and purchasing a commercial fishing boat where she & Glenn then moved
to Port Angeles where Glenn fell ill and passed away in 1998.
Joanne lived in Port Angeles for 6 more years until family asked her to downsize and consider
moving closer to them. Joanne moved directly into a cottage here at Ashley Pointe in 2006.
Some of Joanne’s hobbies include crocheting, collecting dolls, reading and computers.
Joanne loves her fellow community members here at Ashley Pointe and looks forward to daily con-
versations and even an occasionally trip out with friends to dinner.
We love that you’re here!

On Tuesday, July 4, our nation will celebrate its
241st birthday! Amazing! It just seems like
yesterday that the focus was on our Bicentennial
Celebration. Throughout its history, this "one
nation under God with liberty and justice for all"
has been blessed with a lot of patriots....some well
known like those on Mount Rushmore...George
Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln
and Teddy Roosevelt!
But let me tell you about a patriot that a lot of us got
to know right here at Ashley Pointe who just went
home to be with his Lord a few weeks ago. Here's
part of Larry Bruscas' story in his own words:
I was born on December 11, 1934 in Chicago,
Illinois. I was of Argentinean/English descent. His
mother, Mabel Isom, was born in Steelville,
Missouri. She was a homemaker. My father,
Angelo Mario Bruscas, was born in Azuel,
Argentina. His family immigrated to the United
States when he was a child. He served in the United
States Army for 34 years and retired as a Colonel.
It was my privilege and joy to serve, like my dad, in
the United States Army for 26 years. I served in the
later part of the Korean War and for nine years in
Vietnam during the nasty time of the war. During
that time I also was able to attend the University of
Nebraska at Omaha where I studied military
history, Spanish and Vietnamese. I went on to
earning my Bachelors Degree in Political Science.
I am especially proud of the fact that I was a
member of the Green Beret and that I made 519
parachute jumps. It was like going to Coney
Island every day. I was wounded three times and
had lots of close calls. I learned to zig zag and to
stay low in order to stay alive! I became a Troop
Commander and eventually rose to the rank of Lt.
Colonel. One special memory was being in Panama
when the Panama Canal was turned over to the
government of Panama. I could summarize my
military career this way: it was 26 years of doing
what was right and 26 years of forgetting what I
saw.
Since I was away a lot as my boys were growing up,
my wife became the family leader. When I did make
it home, my wife would say to me, "Now you are in
charge!" Based on my regrets for all the time I
missed with my boys, I have tried to develop a
strong relationship with my grandchildren.
I am currently attending Calvary Chapel in Lake
Stevens with my son Vincent. My favorite portion of
the Bible is I & II Peter. My favorite hymn is one
that my granddaughter sang at my wife's funeral--
"The Old Rugged Cross." I am secure in my faith in
the One who died on the cross for me.
The most influential person in my life was definitely
my father. His career in the Army was a model for
my career. I still treasure a portrait of him that I
had painted while I was stationed in Germany.
Since my life was lived under the military honor
code, here's a lesson that I would like to pass on to
others: NO lie, NO cheat, NO steal! I would like to
be remembered as a person who always tried to get
along with people and that I was a good soldier who
believed in and sought to serve God and country.
Larry did faithfully serve God and country....and I
believe he heard his Lord say to him a few weeks
ago, "Well done, good and faithful servant! Enter
now into the joy of your Lord." But Larry missed
out on a lot of quality time with his family while
serving God and country. And his kids missed out
on a lot of quality time with their dad while he was
serving God and country. Larry's story challenges
each of us to never take for granted and to make the
very most of the precious opportunities we have for
family time...time with our parents, our
grandparents, our spouses, our children and our
grandchildren.
So if you are able to enjoy a picnic and fireworks
with your family on the 4th of July, make the most
of those moments together and be grateful for the
sacrifice of all those patriots who made it possible!
