Shopping Calendar Gets a School Day
A magazine for teenage girls will try, joined by marketers and retailers, to add another
"special" day to the American marketing calendar already crowded with celebrations both
real (Christmas, Halloween) and fanciful (Black Friday, Cyber Monday).
The magazine, Teen Vogue, is ready to begin promoting Aug. 11 as a national day for
back-to-school shopping. Back-to-School Saturday will offer young shoppers - and the
parents who often pay the bills - sales, free samples and events in stores and malls.
Teen Vogue has two dozen advertisers taking part, all of them reliant on the back-to-
school season for revenue. The participants will include Aéropostale, American Eagle
Outfitters, Express, Guess, H&M, Maybelline New York, Pacific Sunwear of California,
Quiksilver, Staples and Vans. Four brands sold by Procter & Gamble, the nation's largest
advertiser, will be involved: Cover Girl, Olay, Pantene and Tampax.

Mind-Controlled Videogames Become RealityPicture this: You put on a headset and relax your mind. Soon you begin controlling an object
with your thoughts.
This mind-power trick may seem far-fetched, like something from a late-night science fiction
movie or the back of an old comic book. But several companies are bringing this technology
to life with affordable headsets that determine a person's state of mind.
The gadgets translate brain waves into digital information and beam it wirelessly to
computers or other devices.
So far the headsets are confined to mostly digital interfaces-videogames and movies whose
plots can be altered with the mind-although in some cases real-world objects have been
used, like a pair of catlike ears that move depending on a person's mood. The technology,
still in its infancy, has the potential to not only entertain but to possibly improve education
and strengthen mental health, some doctors say.

Apple Gears Up for New Products
Apple Inc. chief executive Tim Cook teed up big expectations for the world's largest
technology company, saying in an interview that the company is preparing to release
some "incredible" new products.
But, pressed about possibilities such as whether Apple would develop a smaller iPhone
or a television, he gave no details, vowing to "double down" on product secrecy.
During his remarks during the Tuesday evening opening interview at the D: All Things
Digital conference-his first appearance at the annual event-Mr. Cook stressed continuity
with his predecessor, Steve Jobs, who handed him the reins in August. Mr. Jobs died in
October.
Mr. Cook said that Apple would continue to innovate and hinted at big things ahead. "The
juices are flowing," he said. "We have some incredible things coming out."

Stay connected while you go: Bathrooms go high-techNot even the bathroom is free from technology these days. Now it's becoming the iBathroom.
As bathrooms overtake kitchens as the nation's top remodeling priority, more consumers are going high-tech: steam showers with built-in speakers, medicine cabinets with integrated TVs, and toilets with MP3/phone docking stations.
Pricey new gadgets are making it even easier for people to stay connected. Already, three-quarters of Americans say they use their smartphones in the bathroom, according to a survey this year by marketing firm 11Mark.
"They're for the guy taking his iPod into the bathroom anyway," says Home Depot bath merchant Jennifer Hartman. What's on tap?
