Fast-Food Joints Push Chicken As Beef Prices Set New Highs Wall Street Journal

As ground beef prices soar, fast food chains such as McDonalds, Wendy's/Arby's and Burger King are absorbing the cost but are promoting "margin friendly" menu items such as chicken and salads, Paul Ziobro reports. The U.S. Department of Agriculture says prices for 90%- and 50%-lean beef are 14.4% and 31.6% higher, respectively, than last year.

Wendy's, for example, is focusing on promoting a new flavor of "boneless wings" and will launch premium salads later in the summer. Burger King is readying a limited-time bone-in pork ribs entrée. The price rise comes even as the National Cattlemen's Beef Council has launched a campaign focusing on health and nutrition, as Sarah Mahoney reports this morning in Marketing Daily.

Indeed, Ron Winslow reports in the Wall Street Journal that a new meta-study from the Harvard School of Public Health finds that steak, hamburgers and other non-processed cuts of meat are not linked to an increased risk of heart disease. Processed meats such as bacon, sausage, hot dogs -- with about four times the amount of salt -- are the true dietary culprits. The paper is published in the online edition of the American Heart Association journal

Why BP Isn't Fretting Over Its Twitter ImpostorOil Giant Says Humorous Feed's Followers Are Expressing Frustration

You would think that BP would be fretting over the hijacking of its brand on Twitter, because, in less than a week, the handle @bpglobalpr has amassed a following double the size of BP's real feed. But part of the reason the impostor is still going strong is the company hasn't contacted Twitter to take it down, and it might not, BP told Ad Age today.

The account started last Wednesday afternoon with this tweet: "We regretfully admit that something has happened off of the Gulf Coast. More to Come." Fewer than 50 tweets later, the feed has nearly 13,000 followers and counting -- compared to the 5,000 or so at @BP_America -- and its humorous blasts have been re-tweeted by everyone from filmmaker Michael Moore to singer Michelle Branch.

For the vast majority of people out there, it's obvious someone is having a laugh at the situation, because you wouldn't expect the real BP to be "worried about the effect this disaster will have on bikini season."

Celebrity Scandals Have Low Brand Impact

According to the findings of a new Adweek Media/Harris Poll of 2,140 U.S. adults surveyed in April, 2010 by Harris Interactive, 74% of Americans say when a celebrity endorser gets involved in a scandal, it doesn't impact the way they feel about the brand or brands they endorse. 22% say they feel worse about the endorsed brands and 5% say they feel better about them.

There is an age difference, though, when it comes to attitude towards the endorsed brands after a scandal, says the report:

81% Americans aged 55 and older, as well as 77% of those 35-44, say the scandal has no impact on how they feel about the brand

Those 45-54 are most likely to have a negative feeling as 28% of them say they feel worse about the brand

Those 18-34, however, are most likely to think positively about it as 11% say they feel better about an endorsed brand after a celebrity gets involved in a scandal.

Food Companies Developing The Intense Flavors American Crave Wall Street Journal

Miriam Gottfried reports that the American palate is changing and food company's product development types are slaving over hot stoves, vats and test tubes to appeal to our "hotter, mintier, fruitier" desires. Frito-Lay's new Doritos chips -- First-, Second- and Third-Degree Burn -- are made with jalapeño, buffalo and habanero flavors, respectively, for example.

Food companies sometimes say they are adding "umami," a Japanese word that roughly means "good flavor," Gottfried explains. Customers are also part of the mix, of course. To develop Dr Pepper Cherry soda, Dr Pepper Snapple offered consumers 30 different cherry flavors to rate on a nine-point scale. It was given a JAR score, which stands for "just about right."

"Bold is replacing boring," says McCormick's executive chef Kevan Vetter. The spice company offers an annual "flavor forecast," predicting the most popular flavor couplings of the forthcoming year. Among the 2010 pairings are roasted cumin and chick peas, caraway and bitter greens, roasted rhubarb and ginger, and almond and ale.

Kraft Wants To Turn Mac & Cheese Into A Family Food New York Times

In a new campaign from a new agency, Kraft Macaroni and Cheese Dinner is going after a bunch of old customers: Adults who may be inclined to think they've outgrown the comfort food. Stuart Elliott reports that the work from Crispin Porter & Bogusky carries the theme, "You know you love it," and contains lines such as "The most fun you can have with your stove on" and "Imported from your childhood."

The $50-million-plus campaign is moving away from the value message that has characterized the brand's advertising recently. "We're realizing a lot of our brands have the right to play in a more emotional space than the rational territory we've mined in the past," says Chris Miles, director of advertising for the grocery business at Kraft.

Besides TV, print and outdoor ads; there will be online ads, a Web site, http://youknowyouloveit.com, social media components and "noodle art", which Elliott describes as replicas of macaroni noodles, 20 feet long and 9 feet high, placed in and around public spaces such as San Francisco's Fisherman's Wharf.
